Chris Galwey - Nervous Coach

South Canterbury U18 had their first hit out of the season playing Mid Canterbury on the Aorangi Oval on Sunday 30th October. Rain in the morning enforced a delayed start, but play did eventually get under way and Mid Canterbury batted first.

Mid Canterbury’s Bird brothers built a half century opening partnership, but once broken there was a steady stream back to the pavilion as players battled to build partnerships with T Bird who in the end batted right through before being run out for 99 on the last ball of the innings but helped his side to a good total of 196.

Mid Canterbury’s running and calling was very poor, and South Canterbury capitalised on this with a good fielding performance with 4 run outs (direct hits) and four catches to support their bowling attack. Nathan McNicol was the most successful with his left-arm medium pacers taking 2-27, while Daniel Dorgan, Ben Watson, Dan O’Brien and Levi McCoy all took one each.

South Canterbury’s reply started badly as opener Harry Millar joined the list of batsmen with “run out” beside their name but then  Tom Pavletich and opener Ben Simpson saw the score through to the 40s before 3 quick wickets fell to have SC 47-4.

Michael Hogan joined Simpson and looked good driving or cutting through the off-side before being bowled for 21 by Mid Canterbury spinner Meyrick, who troubled most South Canterbury batsmen on his way to figures of 4-30.

Levi McCoy was the most successful SC batsman scoring 41 from 68 balls before being stumped, and while the tail wagged well for South Canterbury, in the end they couldn’t give coach Chris Galwey the birthday present he would have liked and were all out for 184 in the 47th over, 13 runs short of victory.
