Six from SC in tournament team

South Canterbury were humbled by Canterbury Country in the final match
of the South Island primary cricket tournament in Oamaru yesterday but
had six players selected for a combined representative team.
The under-14 regional tournament that pitted two Canterbury teams against
two from Otago has gone – it is replaced by a state of origin competition.
This joins up Mid and South Canterbury to play team selected from Christchurch
and another from Country, Buller and West Coast.
Selected for the Central South Island were Nick Galwey, Jack Harper,
Harry Millar, Josh Dick, Nathan McNicol and Mathew Walker.
In their final match South Canterbury were put in to
bat and were soon under pressure. They struggled to get the ball through
the field and as a result lost wickets, to be dismissed for 78. Mathew
Walker batted diligently for nearly two hours for his 18, Daniel Dorgan
scored 12, Mathew Brown 12 and Jaron Chamberlain 10.
Canterbury Country achieved the target for the loss of only two wickets
with Dick taking 2-8.
"We were never in the hunt all day," said John
Threlkeld. "We got behind the eight ball early on and stayed there."
He said Country bowled well and sustained pressure on
the batting.
"Overall we are pretty pleased," he said. "Getting six
players in the combined team was a boost."
Superb half century pulls SC through

Joshua Dick chose the right time to score his first representative half
century, when he anchored the South Canterbury middle order in a valuable
win over Southland Country, at the South Island primary cricket tournament
in Oamaru yesterday.
While South Canterbury were not exactly in trouble chasing a score of
83 when Dick came to the wicket, they were vulnerable. He smoothed rough
waters and with a variety of strokes to all parts of the ground, grabbed
the initiative back from the Southland Country attack.
Southland Country had two quality bowlers and that storm
had to be weathered before the game could be won. Dick, 50, was supported
by Jack Harper, 29, as South Canterbury recovered from 48-4.
Earlier, the bowlers had done the trick after Nick Galwey won the toss
and put Southland Country in to bat. Nathan McNichol set the tone when
he ripped out two batsmen in the first over without conceding a run.
From there Southland struggled, with all the bowlers returning favourable
figures. McNichol finished with 2-6, leg spinner Galwey 3-9, Ben Fraser
1-15, Dick 1-3, Jack Bindon 1-17 and Harper 1-6.
Daniel Dorgan got through his five overs without taking a wicket but
conceded only one run.
In their final game South Canterbury face Canterbury
Country.
Good win for primary XI

Although they had to work hard South Canterbury proved too good for Invercargill
Metro on the second day of the South Island Primary Schools cricket tournament
in Oamaru yesterday.
Invercargill won the toss and put South Canterbury in to bat, a decision
that backfired when the openers, Mat Walker 26 and Nick Galwey 23, added
51 for the first wicket.
They were backed up by Harry Miller who top scored with 39, Joshua Dick
32 and Jaron Chamberlain 12.
South Canterbury declared at 166-8 after a solid batting performance
that included a number of handy partnerships.
In reply Invercargill were dismissed inside the last hour for 71. Although
it was not a large score their batsmen set out to preserve their wickets
more likely in hopes of gaining a draw rather than making the 167 runs.
Ben Fraser returned the remarkable figures of 2-6 in six overs with his
leg spinners while Jack Harper took 1-0 from five overs.
Luke Evans took 2-5 from five, Dick 1-2 from five, Daniel Dorgan 1-4
from five and Chamberlain 1-6 from four overs.
"It was a good all-round team performance," said coach John
Threlkeld. "They bowled very straight and batted well and the fielders
supported the bowlers with five catches and a direct hit run out."
SC have tough start in junior cricket

South Canterbury started the South Island primary school cricket tournament
with a draw against Christchurch Red.
John Threlkeld, a coach, said it was a reasonable effort
and credited the team for never giving up. He said afternoon conditions
in Oamaru yesterday were very warm and the team was punished for a loose
patch after lunch where more than a 100 runs were scored in little more
than an hour.
Christchurch Red declared with 239 for nine wickets and
South Canterbury played out the game with 166 runs for five wickets. A
loss looked likely when South Canterbury were three wickets for 16 runs
and later five for 78.
Mr Threlkeld said it was credit that the team did not fold and played
out for a draw.
Jack Harper was the top batsman with 81 runs. Joshua
Dick was the top bowler taking two wickets for nine runs.
The JAB once again had a very full 2005 - 2006 season,
of which some of the highlights were:
The
Primary A team sharing first place at the South Island Primary Tournament
in Nelson with Tim Leonard, Jacob Naylor, Jack Harper and William Wright
gaining selection for Canterbury U14 teams.
- The Year 5 & 6 team coming second in the Year 5 & 6 Canterbury
District Tournament in Rangiora.
- The Under 15 Team coming second in the U15 Vines Tournament in Blenheim.
- The selection of Philip Lill and Alexander McKenzie for the Canterbury
U15 team.
The Saturday Morning Competition saw entries much on
a par with the previous season with Waihi School winning the 2-day competition
and Pleasant Point winning the 1-day competition in A Grade.
The B Grade section was won by Geraldine.
In the afternoon the 4th Grade was combined with Mid
Canterbury. Geraldine/Methven combined were the competition winners.
