Four South Canterbury age group teams took on
their North Otago counterparts in very warm conditions in Oamaru on Sunday.
Three matches were won by South Canterbury with the
highlight being an unbeaten century by South Canterbury's Alistair Harvey
in the year five and six match.
The under-17 match saw South Canterbury score 231 for seven (50 overs).
Among the runs for South Canterbury were Willie Wright 49, Tom Walsh
43, Nick Galwey 36, Sam Carlaw 24 and James McFarlane 20 not out.
Brent Cant was the backbone of the North Otago innings with 71 runs.
North Otago were all out for 217, 15 runs short of victory. Nick Galwey's
4/20 including two wickets in the last over saw South Canterbury home
in a close tussle.
Sam Carlaw and Brad Leonard each claimed two wickets a-piece.
The under-15 match was also close with North Otago scoring 226/7 (50
overs).
South Canterbury were left to rue numerous dropped catches. Nick Haack
3/49 and Michael Shaw 2/33 took the majority of the wickets.
In reply South Canterbury fell just short being all out for 211. Ben
Simpson lead the way with a defiant 63 compiled from 37 overs. Useful
contributions were also made by Josh Dick 33 and Hayden Blackler 33.
The Primary A fixture was more one-sided with South Canterbury scoring
an imposing 240 for nine off their 50 overs.
Three of the South Canterbury top order retired with Tristan Cooper and
Michael Hogan both reaching half centuries.
Jack Woodley had earlier reached 29 after opening the innings.
An enterprising 50 run partnership between Lathan Gibb and Bradley Surridge
for the ninth wicket putting the icing on the cake.
South Canterbury had to work hard for wickets but North Otago were eventually
all out for 137.
Brett Walker wrapped up the tail taking four for five off four overs.
Also taking wickets were Nick O'Brien 2/17, Lathan Gibb 2/8 and Zac Emmerson
2/28.
The South Canterbury year five and six batting effort was very much dominated
by Alistair Harvey 102 (retired) and Matthew MacKenzie 34 who put on a
104 run partnership.
South Canterbury reached 171 from their allotted 40 overs.
North Otago came close in reaching 161/9 in their 40 overs.
South Canterbury's Chris Hogan 4/13 and Matthew MacKenzie 2/15 did most
of the damage with the ball.
Both the Primary A and year five and six teams along with a newly formed
development team have games against Dunedin Metro in Dunedin on March
9 and against Christchurch Metro at Geraldine on March 16.
Craig Davies sets new SC Batting Record
Craig
Davies was the star of the show as he batted for the entire South Canterbury
first innings against Mid Canterbury in the final Hawke Cup elimination
match of the season. Davies’ innings of 225 runs from 331 balls in 378
minutes (5 ½ hours at the crease) set a new record score by a South Canterbury
batsman, surpassing the previous best of 209 not out made by Stephen Pagan
in 2004.
To put the value of this innings into perspective, the
next best score by a SC batsman was only 35, and Davies was last out with
the score at 390. There were some nervous moments (perhaps not in the
middle for the assured looking Davies), but definitely on the sidelines
as he approached this huge milestone and wickets fell at the other end.
A very nervous looking No 11, Grant Watt, joined Davies when he was still
a couple of runs short of the record as spectators and players alike held
their breaths, but Watt was solid and then Davies played the shot of an
already impressive innings as he lofted the bowler to ‘cow corner’ (wide
mid on) to break the record. He duly followed this up with another six
and four in successive balls before his innings and that of South Canterbury
ended.
With 9 overs to be bowled before stumps South Canterbury
picked up a wicket to end play for the day in a dominant position.
Day two saw Mid Canterbury set about a long chase for
first innings points with a century partnership for the second wicket
and more solid partnerships with contributions of 73 from Dave Maw, Lyal
Jemmett 49 and Robert Madden 55, before the introduction of the new ball
brought immediate success with two wickets falling at 266.
Todd Elliotte bowled a long spell of 31 overs to finish
with 4-65 while Craig Hinton had a defiant Garth Jemmett caught on the
boundary for 41 to claim his 5th victim (5-94) and close the Mid Canterbury
innings at 313 giving a first innings win to South Canterbury.
Craig Davies capped off a fine match by taking the other
wicket, while for Mid Canterbury, No 11 Wayne McDowell finished the match
with more career runs than wickets to his name for the first time for
Mid Canterbury.
South Canterbury’s Hawke Cup Bid Fails
South Canterbury travelled to Rangiora to play Canterbury Country in
the latest round of the Hawke Cup elimination this weekend. After a disappointing
result against Buller in the previous match, the team was looking for
a big improvement to keep them in the hunt to win their zone and go through
to the South Island playoffs.
Things started well with captain Todd Elliotte winning the toss and electing
to bat first, but South Canterbury was soon in trouble at 2-2 before Ben
Millar and Dan Laming steadied the ship and took the score through to
120 when Millar was out for 43. This brought James Laming to the crease
and once again he in tandem with Dan ground out a solid partnership and
at one stage South Canterbury were 190-3 and looking like amassing the
large total always needed when playing Canterbury Country, especially
as these matches generally become a race for first innings points.
With Dan in sight of another century for his province he was out bowled
for 93. James carried on to score 61 and be seventh out, but with little
support as the last 6 wickets fell for only 50 runs and South Canterbury
were dismissed for 243.
South Canterbury had 15 overs to bowl before stumps on the first day
and also started well, removing two batsmen including former Canterbury
first class player Robbie Frew cheaply, but by the close of play Country
had got themselves back into a good position at 72-2.
As another fine day dawned on day two, Canterbury Country continued on
in the same vane as the night before. While Craig Hinton and Todd Elliotte
took a couple of wickets each and the rest of the bowling attack was solid,
South Canterbury’s failure to score at least another 100 runs after such
a good start when batting was their downfall. They were unable to apply
that extra bit of pressure which causes doubts in the batsman’s mind,
batting collapses, and makes the difference in representative matches.
Canterbury Country by getting through to just under 300 easily gained
first innings points and with that, the opportunity to win the zone.
SC Lose outright to Buller
South Canterbury travelled to Westport in pursuit of a 1st innings win
to help them in their quest for Hawke Cup honours over the weekend, but
some bad shot selection in the first innings saw them collapse to be all
out for 84 chasing a target of 192 set by Buller.
Buller had batted first with Troy Scanlon being South Canterbury’s nemesis
scoring 62 to go alongside a 5 wicket bag he would take when SC batted.
For SC, debutant Sam Devlin picked up 3 wickets, ever reliable captain
Todd Elliotte grabbed 4 while Kevin Teahan was rewarded with 1 wicket
from a steady spell of line and length bowling and then Craig Davies mopped
up the tail taking two wickets with his spinners.
For South Canterbury, Dan Laming with 40 was the only batsman to show
much fight as the wickets tumbled around him and SC were 78-8 overnight.
On the second day they were greeted with rain and the possibility of play
looked remote, but the water disappears quickly on the Coast and SC were
soon all out for 84 and asked to follow on.
An improved second innings saw SC 114-2 at one stage with Craig Davies
30 and Jeremy Liddy 33 both out, but young Ben Millar was 47 not out as
SC looked to bat for the rest of the day with play scheduled to go through
until 8.00pm Sunday evening.
Unfortunately, after a solid start the batting again failed as the last
eight wickets fell for a further 58 runs as Buller dismissed South Canterbury
a second time. This left Buller needing to score 64 runs from 17 overs
for outright victory and unless bad light or rain stopped play would have
been achieved comfortably.
Canterbury Country have already won outright this weekend over West Coast,
so this still means the next game for South Canterbury against Canterbury
Country in January will be the all important match in helping decide who
wins the competition as both teams will then have a game against Mid Canterbury
to wrap up the season.
SC beat West Coast & Weather
South Canterbury managed to outfox the weather as they set about gaining
maximum points from their first Hawke Cup match of the season against
West Coast at the Aorangi Oval.
After winning the toss SC asked West Coast to bat, a decision that was
soon reaping reward as opening bowlers Kris Howes and Craig Hinton tore
through the top and middle order. At drinks in the first session West
Coast was 30-5 and the break didn’t help their cause as wickets continued
to tumble. Kevin Teahan and captain Todd Elliotte chimed in to mop up
the tail and West Coast were dismissed for 81 before lunch.
SC then set about batting only once, all the while with an eye on the
weather on an overcast day. They began steadily losing wickets at 17,
43 and 79 before young Ben Millar was out for a solid 37 after batting
for 2 hours. Dan Laming fell 10 runs later and this brought the in form
James Laming 63 and Jeremy Liddy 74 together and they duly added 110 runs
for the fifth wicket. Beginning slowly their innings blossomed as both
batsmen began to find the boundary and Luke Taylor and Todd Elliotte added
further runs before the declaration came at 266-6 with 23 overs left in
the day’s play.
West Coast were soon struggling a second time as they appealed against
the light, asked for sightscreens and couldn’t decide whether it was the
short or full balls that they couldn’t pick up. Play finishing about 7.00pm
with the Coasters 29-4.
Arriving at the ground on Day Two SC was confronted by a covered wicket,
and drizzle that looked as though it may set in for the day. This brought
about many discussions amongst those present as to the merit of batting
for so long on the first day before declaring, and that in the future
it may be prudent to check the “Moon Man’s Forecasts” as well as the Met
Service.
The Umpires decided to take lunch early, and when the sun broke through
the groundsmen did a good job getting play under way again early in the
afternoon.
Once back on the park SC weren’t letting any chances go by as they soon
dismissed West Coast a second time with Craig Hinton taking 4 wickets
to go with his 3 in the first innings, Kevin Teahan picked up two and
Todd Elliotte also snared 3 wickets from only 13 balls to give him a match
analysis of 4-8.
West Coast was all out for 83 giving SC a comprehensive
outright victory and the right to say that they made all the correct decisions.
This was a good all round display with most players making good contributions
to the team effort as they now look forward to the next round against
Buller in a fortnight’s time.

Result: Outright win to South Canterbury
Taylor, Liddy see SC
to trophy win

South Canterbury retained the one-day cricket Ron Biggar
Trophy yesterday thanks to some middle order magic from Luke Taylor and
Jeremy Liddy.
Playing at the Aorangi Bowl, South Canterbury were teetering
at 95 for five, chasing Mid Canterbury's 192 when the pair came together.
A combination of well-placed shots and smart running
kept the scoreboard ticking over until the momentum swung their way and
they regularly found the boundary.
Their 50 partnership came up in 82 balls while it took
only another 37 balls to crack the century.
Wicketkeeper Taylor's big six over midwicket was a highlight
as the delivery before he somehow managed to let his bat go in a flurry
of action as he looked towards the boundary.
Taylor finished on 54 with Liddy on 64 as they took South
Canterbury to the winning total with two overs to spare.
Opener Craig Davies and James Laming both scored 26.
Mid Canterbury's best bowler was Dan Kruger with two
for 31 off nine overs.
South Canterbury bowlers started well against the visitors
having them two for 12 and kept the pressure on with six of the eight
bowlers used taking wickets.
The highlight was off-spinner Todd Elliotte grabbing
two wickets to make him the province's highest ever wicket-taker with
251.
Craig Hinton also grabbed a pair of victims.

Schoolboy Takes 5 Wicket Bag on Debut for South
Canterbury.

Cricket Correspondent 14-10-07
South Canterbury took on a Canterbury X1 in cold and
blustery conditions at Aorangi Oval on Sunday.
SC was asked to bat first although special rules for the game meant that
both teams would bat 50 overs each, no matter the result in an effort
to give as many players as possible game time.
SC included four young schoolboy players on debut, as well as Hamish
Bennett returning for this match, while Canterbury fielded a team that
included 9 players with first class experience.
SC scored 118-6 with Captain Todd Elliotte top scorer, unbeaten on 24,
but Canterbury’s bowlers were miserly except in the extras dept, where
they were guilty of bowling 19 wides.
In reply, Canterbury soon looked to dominate as Todd Astle and my Canterbury
player of the day, Iain Robertson added 75 for the first wicket in quick
time. Robertson struck powerfully for his 42 to back up his 3-7 with the
ball. After the good opening, things were a bit shakey as debutant Les
Humphris picked up the first 5 Canterbury wickets maintaining a good line
mixed with some slower balls.
Wicketkeeper batsman Kruger Van Wyk then took charge as he scored 68
in partnerships of 83 and 53 before being out caught in the last over.
Canterbury finished at 268-7.
A special mention should be made of the Umpires, Scorers,
Groundsmen, Caterers and helpers for working hard throughout in adverse
conditions.
