SCCA Trophy Cabinet 2007 - 2008South Canterbury Cricket's end-of-season individual awards for 2007-08 were presented on April 9th at a function at the Landing Service building. A large crowd attended (including some in beige, others in school uniform, as well as parents, life members and supporters) to listen to MC Julian Blanchard oversee the evening with the added bonus of having Justin Vaughan, CEO of NZ Cricket in attendance as Guest Speaker. Julian seemed to delight in pointing out the poor showing by Justin during his time as a Black Cap, but I think the point he was trying to make was that with hard work and dedication even average cricketers can make it all the way to the international arena and Vaughan was a good example to the many young aspiring cricketers present. Harvey King, chairman of South Cantebury Cricket reflected on strategies put in place to help with coaching and financial support for the clubs in the district,as well as thanking Richard Davidson for having one of the best per capita results in NZ for attracting young cricketers to Milo cricket and cricket in general. Harvey also made the most of his opportunity to press the National Body for more grassroots funding, while observing that he wished the whole senior cricket season had been as intense as the last couple of weekends leading up to and including the final. The guest speaker, former New Zealand mid-order & opening batsman, medium pace bowler, doctor, company manager and current CEO of New Zealand Cricket Justin Vaughan spoke in response to Harvey's questions, explaining that over 60% of NZ's 97,000 cricketers come from the 'country' areas and that they would be endeavouring to look after them. He said that the continuous question for NZC is always the ability to raise funds to help these areas and he outlined some new deals with Indian Television over the next 5 years worth $50 million as well as the high percentage of income derived from places like Asia, the USA and further outlying TV Networks which would hopefully filter down. After the serious side of things he also briefly responded to the MC's jibes by explaining about his first test win in Pakistan, the accommodation in a biscuit factory, team bonding because of these conditions and why he opened the batting. He was questioned about the NZ first class format and the effect of the new Indian leagues and replied by talking about the impact the IPL and ICL are having on our teams and expressed a belief that these leagues still need to obtain their players from our International sides who have made their name in the traditional test and one day arenas and that the pathway via NZ teams will not change. He expected a lot more changes to the landscape to take place in the next year or so. An enjoyable evening with the MC moving proceedings along at a good 'over rate' meant that the presentations were over in good time and those present were able to mingle and discuss various points that had been raised over supper.
