SCCA Trophy Cabinet 2008 - 2009South Canterbury Cricket's end-of-season individual awards for 2008-09 were presented on April 8th at a function at sponsors the Speights Ale House. A large crowd of parents, life members and supporters were in attendance to listen to MC Julian Blanchard oversee the evening with the added bonus of having Sarah Tsukigawa, White Fern in attendance as Guest Speaker. Julian ran the evening like clockwork, although at times having trouble with the order of proceedings after his timetable and that of the administration seemed to vary. Andrew MacRae, the new chairman of South Canterbury Cricket made a good speech acknowledging all the various people, players, administrators, volunteers, sponsors and supporters who combine to keep the game of cricket flourishing locally. He also made a special mention of a gold medal award that has been bestowed upon retiring chairman and South Canterbury cricket stalwart Harvey King by the ICC, one of only 1000 presented world wide. Harvey has played for South Canterbury and first class for Canterbury, as well as being an active administrator, coach and umpire since his playing days, even umpiring this seasons Tweedy Cup final. Patron Jim Underdown spoke in memory of Rex Bowden who passed away this season after spending a lifetime involved with the game, including penning two histories of cricket in South Canterbury, and a moments silence was held for him and senior player Andrew 'Rowdy' McLachlan who was tragically killed at the start of the season. The guest speaker Sara Tsukigawa, current New Zealand Women's representative (White Ferns) spoke about her recent experiences at the World Cup in Sydney where NZ lost in the final to England. Plenty of the young girls and cricketers in general in attendance would have taken inspiration from the dedication still required to play at the top level for our largely amateur women in a day and age where the Indians and Twenty20 formats are seeing millions coming into the game. Her travels from a park in Balclutha to the World Cup and the experiences this journey has brought about were very interesting, and perhaps it was fitting that later in the evening her aunty would be presenting the Allan Edgington Trophy for Sports Personality of the Year. Sarah also answered some interesting questions from the audience, intermingled with the confused appearing observations of the local cricket director. In the changing face of the game, it is worth noting that she is already seen as a 'power play' specialist. An enjoyable evening with the MC moving proceedings along at a good 'over rate' meant that the presentations were over in good time and those present were able to mingle and discuss various points that had been raised over supper.
