Annual Report 2010/2011 Season

I am delighted to report on a successful season from our members both on the field and off the field.

We welcomed Kim Cotton to our ranks; she has proved that with the right desire to succeed, the willingness to put in the time and effort, anyone can start on the path to become a professional cricket umpire. Kim this year successfully passed, with outstanding marks, both NZCUSA Level 3 and Level 4 examinations; more importantly she proved to be a very competent and respected umpire. Being appointed to a Hawke a Cup match all in her first year of umpiring is a feat in itself as all this normally takes at least two seasons. We done Kim, we are all very proud of you.

We must commend all club captains for completing their reports on umpires. This year we had an almost 100% success rate at club level but sadly at Representative level, we are continually being let down with reports not being completed. This is an on-going problem at this level: only 8 reports out of 20 sent in for Hawke Cup matches in our zone is just not good enough. If these reports are not completed the future of an umpire wishing to be selected for higher honours is put in jeopardy.

I would like to acknowledge the work of Graeme Lowrie with his work with Kim in her training and acknowledge his continued involvement in his work both in South Canterbury and for the NZCUSA. The many hours he has put in over the years producing our training resources has been acknowledged, not only by the NZCUSA, but also by NZC. His work is being made available on the NZCUSA web-site: http://www.nzcusa.org.nz. Cricket umpires throughout New Zealand and now throughout the world are the beneficiaries of his tremendous work.

It is pleasing to see that yet again, we had no Code of Conduct reports filed this season. For that we must thank the courtesy shown by all clubs towards our members.

Considering our small numbers, it is a remarkable achievement for our members to have umpired over 60 umpiring days; that does not include the days that Geoff Talbot, Bevan Guthrie and Kim who umpired in various tournaments and Hawke Cup matches throughout the district.

I would like to thank all umpires who stood in games in South Canterbury your contribution was well received. A big thank you goes to the almost forgotten members of our family; our Scoring members, Don George and Steph Drake. Steph is demonstrating her skills in tournaments elsewhere and has received accolades in every match she scores.

I would like to ask all clubs and Schools to talk to their members who may wish to umpire occasionally on a Saturday. We have all the resources available and are willing to train and support anyone who may wish to umpire even as few as 3 or4 Saturdays throughout the upcoming season.

Umpire numbers are dwindling, not only herein South Canterbury but throughout New Zealand and around the world. Our game demands umpires and scorers; without them our game suffers. We ask everyone who loves our game for their support to ensure we are able to provide umpires to all our senior club matches. Yes, we can all do better.

We still have an issue regarding some captains who do not understand some aspects of the playing conditions and the laws. Clubs must ensure all players, and more importantly their captains, take advantage of the resources mentioned above, including the playing conditions of their respective matches.

Sadly, I believe that we are still not functioning as well as we might with our parent body. I refer in particular to comments made by one office holder. We also believe the appointment process for Hawke Cup matches needs to be addressed in terms of cost to South Canterbury Cricket and to the future development of umpires in this and other districts.

Last but by no means least, I would like to thank the CEO, Board and their staff, and all groundsmen at all levels for giving their time and effort in producing quality grounds and pitches for our umpires to officiate at. We look forward to the new season working with the Board and with the new appointments.
