Roncalli College’s new English-import, Ed Kilbee, is keen to leave his mark on the South Canterbury cricket landscape.

The opening batsman may have lasted just two balls in his debut in the South Canterbury senior competition, last Saturday, but he isn’t one to dwell on it.

“That’s a part of the game, every so often you’re going to get a good one that gets you out, and I’d like to think I’m the sort of man who can accept that.

“I was probably lucky I wasn’t out first ball, if [Temuka] had a gully in, I probably would have been out the ball before.

“Days like that come about where you nick-out second ball, but hopefully when I get in to double-figures I turn it into three figures.”

Despite the auspicious start, the 23-year-old has a history of spending time at the crease.

The left-hander played for Wiltshire, the Surrey second XI and the Worcestershire second XI, during the English summer, and scored 63 and 136 in a minor championship match in his last game of the season, last month.

Kilbee was lured to South Canterbury by a former top batsman of the province, Andrew Buckingham.

“I wanted another six months of cricket under my belt and to play cricket during the winter,” Kilbee said.

“I also wanted to appreciate another culture, and see New Zealand, which I’ve heard is a lovely, old place.

“I have ambitions to play for South Canterbury and bringing home some silverware for the boys.”

Kilbee said he was enjoying playing with secondary school pupils at Roncalli and he was drawing on his captaincy experience from his school days to be a good role model.

“The guys are really energetic, young and enthusiastic. If you watch us in the field, you’ll see us buzzing around and that’s why I love cricket, that team buzz is fantastic.”

He said he had always enjoyed opening the batting despite it being one of the hardest roles in cricket.

“It’s where I’ve been batting most of my life.

“Sometimes when I’m batting in the middle-order, I get frustrated wanting to go out in the middle.

“I like the feel of the hard ball on my bat and I like the challenge of the new ball.”

He may also be seen at the bowling crease, with some left-arm medium-pace or slow left-arm spin. The London-born player may not be the only United Kingdom-based player to come to South Canterbury this season, with there being plans for a second player to arrive in the near future.

Kilbee will face his first real test on Sunday, when he will play for a Mid-South Canterbury selection against the Canterbury Wizards in a 50-over match at Timaru’s Aorangi Oval.

New South Canterbury Cricket development officer Shane Gilkison wants to see cricket fields swarming with children over the summer months.

The former South Canterbury representative said increasing the numbers and standard of junior cricket was one of his major priorities after being appointed to the role for the 2011/2012 season and beyond.

Gilkison replaced Richard Davidson, who resigned at the end of last season to pursue other business interests after holding the position for 10 years.

He was hoping to get senior South Canterbury club players to go in to schools to show the kids the pathway to high level cricket.

“I want to get kids back playing cricket, give them a taste and if they like it, then give them a pathway into the clubs, because there aren’t enough kids playing cricket,” Gilkison said.

“You need those players to look up to.

“Even when I was playing senior cricket at a young age, playing against guys like (former Black Cap) Murray Parker was a big factor.”

The Temuka club stalwart and former wicketkeeper, was more likely to swing a tennis racket than a cricket bat during his childhood, before having former South Canterbury representative Phil D’Auvergne as a coach when he went to the now Opihi College.

He played club cricket in Surrey, England, throughout the 1990s as well as in Sussex, acting as a “semi” club professional, and travelling around the region coaching young players.

A desire to raise a family in South Canterbury saw his family move back to Temuka in 2005, where he became involved with the Temuka Cricket Club.

Gilkison said he did not want to be coaching several South Canterbury age-group teams while in the role, and was more eager to assist coaches with their strategy and techniques to provide better coaching for young South Canterbury cricket players.

“I’d like to educate [the parents] with the basics, so it gives them a bit more confidence [to coach] …,” he said.

“Parents may be a bit put-off when they think I’m putting on a coaching course, but it’s nothing like that – it’s just a few basics to help them.”

He said if parents were given the tools to become good coaches then depth would happen from there.

The length of time it takes to play cricket was something Gilkison was trying to work around.

He said the popularity of Twenty20 cricket gave him a way to introduce children to the sport, but he had to find a way to balance that with technique coaching.

Gilkison had been happy coaching many cricket teams at Timaru Boys’ High School in pre-season training, but was keen to visit as many schools as possible in the coming weeks.

The SCCA is pleased to announce that Bruce Carlaw has accepted the role as the South Canterbury Senior Men’s Representative Coach for the 2011/12 season.

Bruce has had a long association with cricket in South Canterbury as a most successful player with both the Celtic club and SC representative sides. Bruce has been heavily involved in coaching with his roles at both Roncalli College and at the Celtic club. We are fortunate to have someone of his calibre to lead our premier side.

Bruce has stated he is keen to meet with all Club Captains/Coaches to discuss the 2011/12 representative programme, player availability and training schedule to ensure he puts out the best team possible.

We hope to be in a position to name a manager in the near future.

Who is Bruce Carlaw?

Bruce Carlaw played senior cricket for Celtic from 1978 to 1998 and played 12 seasons for South Canterbury after making his debut in 1983, captaining the side in his final season. He has made sporadic cameos as a coach for Celtic over the years and last season acted as a player/coach for the Roncalli College team after the school made the step-up to the top grade of South Canterbury senior cricket. He has yet to decide whether he will continue to assist Roncalli this season.

Read full article from Timaru Herald Below

Former South Canterbury and Celtic cricket captain Bruce Carlaw has been named the new South Canterbury cricket coach for the 2011-2012 season.

They 48-year-old beat two other applicants for the role. He will replace Richard Davidson, who had the job while he was South Canterbury Cricket development officer.

Carlaw will only have the senior coaching role to worry about, with South Canterbury Cricket executive officer David Fisher suggesting a new development officer will be announced next month.

Carlaw said he was excited about the role, and was keen “to get systems in place” for the start of the season.

He said he would look to have two selectors to help with watching senior club cricket each week, and to try to attract top players from outside the region to play for South Canterbury.

Carlaw said he was keen to have Celtic club stalwarts Robin Beeby as a selector and John Davies, father of current South Canterbury batsman Craig, to act as manager for the team.

“I want as many people around as possible who can offer advice and bring something to the team.”

Carlaw said he felt Davidson “did not have the assistance from others that he could have had” in the job, and he wanted to change that.

He said he would look to assemble a 15-man winter training squad shortly, with the goal of winning the Hawke Cup.

Carlaw said he was keen to take the team “in a new direction”, which would hopefully lead them to the ultimate prize in New Zealand minor associations cricket.

“I’ll be looking at the attitudes of players, trying to up-the-ante on their attitudes and I will try to get players thinking about their roles, and making them understand what is expected.”

He said he was “not interested in perceptions” and club loyalty would not play a part in the selection of the team, despite the likely heavy Celtic make-up of the management structure.

“I want the best players, if you’re the best player, then you’ll be selected, as simple as that.”

Carlaw said he was keen to meet with all clubs before the season started, and hoped everyone would be on-board for the benefit of the senior representative team.

Fisher said he was delighted to have Carlaw sign-on as coach.

“Bruce has been heavily involved in coaching with his roles at both Roncalli College and at the Celtic club.

“We are fortunate to have someone of his calibre to lead our premier side.”

South Canterbury captain Dan Laming said he was looking forward to working with Carlaw in the representative environment. He welcomedCarlaw’s strong emphasis on fielding and his openness to practices which included more than net sessions.

South Canterbury Cricket development officer Richard Davidson has pulled up stumps after 10 years in the job.

Davidson resigned to take up the opportunity to be a self-employed business owner and will announce his plans soon.

He was sad to be moving on but believed the time was right.

“I made one of the hardest decisions I have made for some time but will be moving on to a new and exciting chapter in my life.”

Davidson leaves the job with many fond memories, good mates and some advice for his employers: “I think the job needs to go to a young guy with coaching aspirations to set the thing on fire.”

Davidson arrived with plenty of passion a decade ago, but realises one can stay in a job too long.

“The job needs to be turned over, or else you can hit a brick wall.”

The development officer believes he leaves with South Canterbury’s junior cricket in very good heart but would like to see all those playing senior cricket make themselves available for the representative side.

Davidson said he would also like to see those who had moved out of the province, especially for higher education, support the province by making themselves available for South Canterbury.

“There needs to be competition for places, people need to be there on merit and earn their place, then we will improve.”

Highlights of his time in the job include watching young players develop and go on to achieve higher honours.

“Watching the likes of Hamish Bennett and Tom Walsh go from schoolboys with talent to mature cricketers was great and shows what can be done from here,” he said.

Davidson said he could not leave without mentioning some of those he became involved with and close to.

“Harvey [King] was inspirational, Graeme Broker is a good mate and all those volunteers in age-group cricket giving their time was superb, I made some good friends.”

South Canterbury Cricket president Andrew McRae said Davidson’s contribution to South Canterbury Cricket had been significant over the past 10 years.

“His commitment to the South Canterbury cause, his enthusiasm for the game of cricket and his hard work ethic will certainly be missed.

“He has identified and assisted some of South Canterbury’s elite cricketers over the years and the association owes a huge debt of gratitude for his contribution.

“The association will certainly miss Richard’s skills, expertise and institutional knowledge but we wish Richard all the best in his future endeavours.”
