At 4.45pm Friday night with both the Roncalli and Temuka Twenty20 teams going through their warm-up drills, sponsors flags fluttering in the breeze and the temperature much more pleasant than the inaugural T20 Friday night match a week before, spectators and players alike were looking forward to this second round match in the South Canterbury Placemakers T20 Competition.

Unfortunately whether it was the 11-11-11 curse, or an umpire killing spiders in the garden, the weather soon had a part to play as rain began to fall about 5.10 and a start was delayed.

Eventually play began at 6.00pm with time lost reducing the match to 16 overs each and Roncalli batting first to make use of the better light.

Temuka’s Dillon Lees made a breakthrough in the first over removing Ryan De Joux for 1 brilliantly caught in the gully after his keeper had put down a simple chance off Ed Kilbee two balls earlier.

However, this brought Roncalli’s captain Tom Pavletich to the wicket to join Kilbee and the pair added a further 74 runs in very good time before Kilbee was caught hooking off the bowling of Nathan McNicol.

Tahir Afridi, another of the Roncalli player-coaches continued his form from the previous weekend before being caught by Neil Louw for 42 but had been the mainstay in a 63 run partnership with Pavletich who eventually finished 48 not out after playing a strong supporting role to the two English professionals.

Roncalli’s total of 150-3 was helped along by 26 extras and left Temuka a real challenge with close to 10 runs an over needed in the chase.

Temuka lost their first wicket with only 9 on the board, before young Michael Hogan making his senior debut was soon showing his class on his way to Temuka’s top score with 24. Hogan normally plays for TBHS 1st XI, but this year’s new T20 format allows clubs to bring in players from other clubs to help keep competitive teams during the Friday night matches, especially as some players are unavailable due to work commitments, and it was good to see two Boys High players helping the Temuka cause, the other being second top scorer Dan O’Brien with 17.

Unfortunately for Temuka chasing such a large target, only Willie Stone in the middle order with 14 was able contribute to a partnership and at 74-8 the match looked likely to be an early finish. The tailenders didn’t agree with this as O’Brien and then Robbie Histen with 15 not out and Hami Goldsmith (15) all made it to double figures, but the total looked well out of reach when we realised that Temuka needed to hit all 12 balls from the last two overs for 6! Goldsmith started off trying to do this despatching the first two balls for 4, but in the end Temuka finished on 104, 47 short of a winning score.

For Roncalli Ben Watson was the early destroyer with 2-11 from his 4 overs, but it was Alex McDuff’s ‘big day out’ taking 4-17 from his 3 overs. At one stage he had 3-5 before Goldsmith took the long handle to him in his third over, but McDuff had the last laugh having him caught in the gloom on the boundary by Harry Millar to seal victory.

Roncalli’s other impressive feat, was that they never dropped a catch, and in fact took 8 catches, something that would have been unheard of last season where that number was often more likely to be the amount dropped, so the influence of the new player-coaches, their fielding skills training and keen attitude is starting to have rewards, and with a wet ball and bad light they are not likely to strike worse fielding conditions this year.

Rep Match Cancellations & Changes

November 10th, 2011

Otago Country have cancelled two of their rep matches set down for this Sunday 13th November against the South Canterbury Primary Development and South Canterbury U16 sides.

A trial match for the SC U16 Boys will be played with the South Canterbury Yr9 team starting at 11.00am on Sunday 13th at Aorangi Oval instead.

The Primary A match against Central Otago will still be played as scheduled at Ashbury 6 and the Primary YR 5&6 match will be played at Celtic Sports Ground.

South Canterbury retained the Ron Biggar Memorial Trophy with a nine-run win over Mid Canterbury in their 50-over cricket match at Aorangi Oval.

South Canterbury coach Bruce Carlaw gave the performance a pass mark but admitted it was far from perfect.

The home team had moments of complete control with both bat and ball, only for things to fall away in the middle overs of both innings.

South Canterbury got off to a fast start, thanks to Richie Preston who was in no mood to hang around.

He raced through to 37 from 26 balls before he was bowled by Des Kruger. Jeremy Liddy joined his fellow opener in the pavilion three overs later.

Craig Davies, who has an average of 375 at club level, looked out of sorts scoring one off 16 balls.

Ed Kilbee and captain Dan Laming combined for 74-run fourth-wicket partnership.

Kilbee passed 50 and was looking to accelerate. He hit a four and a six off consecutive balls from Rhys Phillips, and tried to replicate it on the next ball but only managed to present an easy catch from a top-edge.

It sparked a middle-order collapse.

South Canterbury went from 150 for three to 156 for seven in the space of 27 balls, as Laming saw wickets tumble at the other-end.

He found support from Craig Hinton, and accelerated the score over 200 in the closing stages.

When he was dismissed for 66 with five overs remaining, South Canterbury had to readjust their target and look to bat out their overs, eventually making 227 for 9.

Opening bowler Richard Print finished with 2 for 38 from his 10 overs, while Phillips also impressed on a batsman’s wicket, taking 2 for 29 from his 10 overs.

Left-arm fast bowler Craig Hinton produced a terrific opening spell to bag three Mid Canterbury wickets early.

The first wicket in South Canterbury colours for Roncalli paceman Ben Watson had the visitors on the ropes at 34 for four.

After Hinton had bowled his 10 overs straight and conceded just 27 runs, his back-up seamers looked largely non-threatening.

Dan Laming, Kevin Teahen and spinner Davies all struggled early and Kruger and Dan Thomas went about rebuilding the innings.Kruger was eventually run out for 25, but Thomas continued to accelerate the scoring.

He found support in Richard Print (28) and Jono Print (30 not out).

Mid Canterbury needed six runs an over for the last 10 overs.

The key moment came when Thomas was caught on the mid-wicket boundary by Mark Tutton, after playing a needless shot, from the bowling of Sam Carlaw, for 74.

It was one of Tutton’s three catches on return to the top side.

South Canterbury had their noses in front from that point, and while Mid Canterbury fought until the last over, when they needed 15 runs, South Canterbury prevailed.

Bruce Carlaw said his middle-order batsmen suffered from poor shot selection.

“That comes from the added pressure.

“Some of the guys made some poor shot selections and I’m sure that is a result of them not being pressured at club level,” Carlaw said.

He said he was happy with the efforts of Watson and Hinton but said others needed to step up.

South Canterbury play Christchurch Suburban in a one-day match next weekend in Christchurch.

Glen Drake

Glen Drake 5-29 & 58 not out

Celtic were pushed for the first time this season but beat Roncalli by six wickets in their senior one-day cricket match at Ashbury Park 6.

Waimate teenager Glen Drake starred with both bat and ball in taking five wickets with his spinners and scoring 58 not out in his side’s six wicket win over Timaru at Knottingly Park.

Star’s batsmen again failed to fire after their bowlers had done the hard work in their 16-run loss to Temuka at Temuka Oval.

Roncalli’s older heads got them through to 197 for 7 from their 45 overs on Saturday but they failed to remove Celtic captain Craig Davies, who scored 95 not out to take his season average to 375.

Tahir Afridi showed he was handy with a bat as well as the ball in making 82 for the schoolboys.

He shared in a 60-run second wicket partnership with Ed Kilbee, who made 48.

Roncalli’s start was sedate, but with Afridi anchoring the innings, a total in excess of 200 was on the cards. Celtic’s bowling was tight, but it was let-down by some sloppy ground-fielding and several dropped catches.

It would be a theme which would hurt Roncalli also.

South Canterbury captain Dan Laming ended with figures of 1 for 9 from seven overs, while Glenn Matthews got through eight overs and finished with 2 for 31, but did not bowl at top-speed.

Matthews trapped Afridi leg-before wicket with five overs remaining, and despite the efforts of Barry Ward who hit a quick 16 not out, Roncalli fell just short of 200, after it looked likely for most of the innings.

Davies continued his top-form with the bat but gave Roncalli two chances to dismiss him.

The first ended with wicket-keeper Ward bleeding, with a closed eye and sore left shoulder after he collided with Daniel Dorgan in trying to make a catch.

The second was a tougher caught-and-bowled chance for Afridi.

Davies found good support from Dan Laming who made 32, before he was cleaned-bowled by Alex McDuff, who was finding a lot of swing during his spell. He was the pick of the bowlers and finished with 2 for 27 from his nine overs.

Celtic ambled their way to the total with 16 balls remaining but were never in any danger of losing with captain Davies at the crease.

Waimate put their Twenty20 loss to Star on Friday night behind them by securing a win against Timaru.

Timaru failed to get any partnerships going on a slow track.

Opener Gerald Piddock tried to anchor the innings but he became one of Drake’s five wickets, on 35, and it was left to captain Hayden Butler (20) to get Timaru through to a respectable total, which ended up being 111.

Drake ended with figures of 5 for 29, while Jared Matthews picked-up two wickets.

Waimate’s chase had early wobbles thanks to Josh Smallridge, who picked up the first three wickets with only 25 runs on the board.

Drake had been struggling for runs this season and had pulled out of the South Canterbury squad midweek but he proved to be the calming influence with the bat as he made 58 not out.

He shared in an unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership of 52 with Alan Reid, who made seven.

Smallridge ended with 3 for 15 from four overs, while the spin of Zane Sanders snared the other wicket.

Star let another strong position slip against Temuka.

Having rolled the home side for 119, Star were 69 for 2 in the run-chase but lost their last eight wickets for 34 runs.

Earlier, Willy Stone had made 30, while Nathan McNicol and Dylan Lees both made 19, to get Temuka to their total. Grant Managh mopped-up the tail for Star, taking 3 for 25 from five overs, while Jeremy Lane, Paul Arkinstall and Todd Elliotte each took two wickets.

Nathan Tubb managed 31 for Star while captain Phil McGregor made 19 but there was no other sizeable contribution.

McNicol took three top-order scalps while Dylan Lees grabbed three tailenders to give Temuka the victory.

The two-day competition starts next week.

Dickson the hero for Star

November 5th, 2011

Star notched their first win of the 2011/2012 season with a 10-run victory over Waimate in the opening night of the the South Canterbury Twenty20 cricket competition.

Friday night cricket at Aorangi Oval produced a match which went down to the final over.

Star made 162-5 from their 20 overs, and Waimate were bowled out for 152 in the final over of their run-chase

Nathan Tubb’s 67 anchored Star’s innings last night, but it was the triple-wicket maiden from Hamish Dickson which turned the match, despite Nathan Sew Hoy’s belligerent 90 for Waimate.

Captain Phil McGregor may have won the toss and chosen to bat, but his side was quickly in trouble at 23-3, thanks to the left-arm spin of Matt Devlin who took three wickets in four balls.

Tubb’s innings, which included six fours and two sixes, kept the run-rate at more than seven an over.

He shared in a 92-run fourth wicket partnership with Danny Campbell, who made 35, before he was stumped by Nathan Sew Hoy from the bowling of Glen Drake.

A handy cameo of 17 from the usually sedate McGregor, left Waimate a chase of more than eight runs an over.

Devlin ended with figures of 3-31 from four overs.

Nathan Sew Hoy’s innings dominated the Waimate run chase. He brough-up his 50 in the seventh over, with the team on 59.

He regularly ran out of partners, but it did not stop him trying to score freely.

He used the strong breeze to muscle balls for six on to the embankments, which had Waimate cruising at more than the required run-rate for the first half of the innings.

The matched changed when Dickson removed Jason Sew Hoy for seven and Scott Willoughby and Connor Farrell without a run being scored.

Waimate went from a state of control at 94-3 to 94-6.

With Sew Hoy still at the crease, Waimate were in control, but when Jeremy Lane had him caught and bowled for his first senior wicket of the year, Star had gained a winning advantage.

Waimate needed 15 off the last over, with one wicket remaining, but a runout saw them dismissed with three balls left in their innings.

Dickson finished with 4-19 from his four overs, while Paul Arkinstall and Craig Hinton finished with two wickets.

Chris Galwey - Nervous Coach

South Canterbury U18 had their first hit out of the season playing Mid Canterbury on the Aorangi Oval on Sunday 30th October. Rain in the morning enforced a delayed start, but play did eventually get under way and Mid Canterbury batted first.

Mid Canterbury’s Bird brothers built a half century opening partnership, but once broken there was a steady stream back to the pavilion as players battled to build partnerships with T Bird who in the end batted right through before being run out for 99 on the last ball of the innings but helped his side to a good total of 196.

Mid Canterbury’s running and calling was very poor, and South Canterbury capitalised on this with a good fielding performance with 4 run outs (direct hits) and four catches to support their bowling attack. Nathan McNicol was the most successful with his left-arm medium pacers taking 2-27, while Daniel Dorgan, Ben Watson, Dan O’Brien and Levi McCoy all took one each.

South Canterbury’s reply started badly as opener Harry Millar joined the list of batsmen with “run out” beside their name but then  Tom Pavletich and opener Ben Simpson saw the score through to the 40s before 3 quick wickets fell to have SC 47-4.

Michael Hogan joined Simpson and looked good driving or cutting through the off-side before being bowled for 21 by Mid Canterbury spinner Meyrick, who troubled most South Canterbury batsmen on his way to figures of 4-30.

Levi McCoy was the most successful SC batsman scoring 41 from 68 balls before being stumped, and while the tail wagged well for South Canterbury, in the end they couldn’t give coach Chris Galwey the birthday present he would have liked and were all out for 184 in the 47th over, 13 runs short of victory.

Roncalli batsman Ed Kilbee in action on his way to 131*

Roncalli batsman Ed Kilbee in action on his way to 131*

A big reputation garnered a big response from Roncalli College opener Ed Kilbee during the fourth round of the South Canterbury senior one-day cricket competition.

The England-based 23-year-old arrived in South Canterbury with a reputation as a run-thirsty top-order player, and on Saturday he delivered with a sublime 131 not out in his side’s 114-run win over Timaru at Ashbury Park 6.

In other results, Star’s season slide continued with a 10-wicket loss to Celtic at the Celtic Sports Grounds, while Waimate chased down 141 against Temuka to win by six wickets at the Temuka Oval.

Kilbee gave his opposition a chance but he was dropped at first slip by Gerald Piddock off the bowling of Jordan Morrow when he had just reached double figures.

It proved a costly miss, as he went about a well-timed innings to hold Roncalli’s innings together.

Kilbee carried his bat after he saw his first three partners come and go with only two runs on the board.

At that point, Timaru captain Hayden Butler’s decision to bowl looked a good one. The Ashbury Park pitch had low bounce early but got more consistent as the sun baked it.

Ben Simpson scratched his way to eight, but batted time, before he was dismissed with the score on 48.

Kilbee found his feet striking boundaries off the back foot, before he showed his front-foot arsenal as his innings went on.

A 63-run sixth wicket partnership between Kilbee and Liam Beck (19) got the score through to 133.

Kilbee was slowly making his way to his century, but then lost Barry Ward, and Daniel Dorgan from consecutive balls and Roncalli, were dangling at 137-8, with Kilbee fast approaching the 90s.

Timaru had again fought their way back in the match, but they could not remove Ben Watson (17 not out) as he put on an unbeaten 88-run partnership with his opener to guide him to his century and then join him in the scoring spree in the last five overs.

Kilbee scored his century in the 41st over and added 31 runs in the last four overs to help Roncalli to 225-8 at the close.

Timaru’s bowlers were consistent, but lacked the backup of their fielders at crucial moments and could not land the killer blow which would have seen them chasing well under 200.

They did concede 33 wides and two no-balls which aided the Roncalli effort.

Spinner Zane Sanders finished with two for 36, while Butler managed three for 47.

Timaru’s reply went downhill early.

Four of the first five batsmen made ducks, and while Piddock tried to make up for his fielding lapse, when he was dismissed for a breezy 36 the match was effectively over.

Dan Murari made 37, but Timaru were bowled out for 111 in the 30th over.

Tahir Afridi’s left-arm swing proved difficult to handle, as he picked-up three for 32, while Dorgan also took three wickets.

Star’s stocks continued to plummet when they were rolled for 87.

Celtic opener Mark Tutton struck a quickfire 50 not out to end the match quickly.

Nathan Sew Hoy (49) and Hayden Matthews (48 not out) guided Waimate to a six-wicket win over Temuka.

Temuka had scrambled to 141 all out thanks to Hayden Broker’s 33 and Dylan Lees’ 24.

Waimate made it home with almost 10 overs to spare thanks to an unbeaten partnership of 62 between Matthews and Alan Reid.

Scoresheets

The SC Yr 9 rep team had an even closer finish than their fellow U16 provincial mates after also travelling to Ashburton to play Mid Canterbury in this early season fixture.

South Canterbury batted first with Lawrence Darling top-scoring with 40 and was well supported by Chris Hogan with 31. Mid Canterbury opening bowler Kieran Hunt was South Canterbury’s nemesis taking 5-23 but in the end SC batted into the 50th over before being all out for 138.

In reply Mid Canterbury started well before Matt McKenzie made the initial breakthrough, and then all the bowlers bowled tidily with William Carter leading the way with 3-16 off his 10 overs. McKenzie took 2-16 and George Morgan,  Josh Mehrtens and Connor Bradley each took one.

Mid Canterbury progressed steadily towards the target while SC made regular breakthroughs to have Mid Cant 89-7 and SC back on top but a 43 run partnership for the eight wicket put Mid Canterbury in the driving seat when 132-7 before South Canterbury picked up the last 3 wickets to dismiss the opposition for 134 and secure a tight win.
