The South Canterbury Yr 5&6 boys had a comprehensive win over tournament leaders Christchurch Metro Astle today at Mandeville. If you are confused because they lost to the same team yesterday, it seems the draw was changed so they actually played Metro MacMillan yesterday.

While it was a beautiful hot day in Rangiora today, the pitches were still keeping low, so when South Canterbury captain Toby Clemmet won the toss he had no hesitation in asking Metro Astle to bat first.

This decision was soon proven correct as the opening batsman was run out with no runs on the board. Jordan Sew Hoy with 2-11 off 8 overs and Kade MacMillan with 2-18 off 7 overs were the leading bowlers as Metro Astle slumped at one stage to 44-7 before their No 9 helped them through to 103-8 after their 40 overs as he finished 43 not out easily topscoring with only one other boy making double figures.

The South Canterbury boys enjoyed their lunch as they were eager to get out and score the runs.

The scoreboard looks quite consistent after Liam Simpson opened with the idea of getting some quick runs to get things under way. When he was out for 11, the score was 23. Scott Robertson retired on 11, Lucas Histen made 14 and when he was out in the 23rd over the SC side was on 70, well on their way.

Toby was joined by Fletcher Rhodes and the pair took the score past the Metro Astle score to record a win before Toby was run out by a direct hit for 15. Fletcher batted strongly picking up 6 boundaries (a rarity in this match) before retiring for a very good 37 and along with Henry Scott who retired on 11 they kept the scoreboard turning over to continue gaining bonus points.

With 2 overs to play South Canterbury needed 12 runs to get another bonus point with 160 required and then lost a wicket, but Logan Sowden and Eli Kerse ran a quick bye to the keeper to get Logan on strike and he duly pulled a delivery to the boundary to get the extra point finishing 11 not out as South Canterbury finished on 163-5 and take 17 points from the match and move well up the table.
