SCCA Trophy Cabinet 2011 - 2012South Canterbury Cricket's end-of-season prizegiving for the 2011-12 season was held on March 30th in sponsor The Grosvenor's Conference Room. The Early Friday evening start proved popular with a large crowd of players, parents, life members and supporters in attendance to listen to MC Julian Blanchard oversee the evening with Canterbury Cricket CEO and former captain of the Black Caps Lee Germon as Guest Speaker. Julian ran the evening like clockwork in his relaxed style, and this was appreciated by all those in attendance. Andrew McRae, the Chairman of South Canterbury Cricket spoke about the 2011/2012 season, congratulating our representative teams again on their good results. He also talked with enthusiasm about the success of the inaugural Friday night Placemakers T20 tournament and that with a few tweaks we can make it even more successful in the seasons ahead. He thanked all the sponsors, the SCCA Board and the new staff CEO David Fisher and Cricket Development officer Shane Gilkison and groundsman Mike Davies for their proactive work during the year. He also acknowledged the various prize winners, cricketing people, players, administrators, volunteers, sponsors and supporters who combine to keep the game prominent locally. Lee Germon, CEO of Canterbury Cricket complimented South Canterbury on their cricket both on and off the field, mentioning that once again the crowd at the T20 match at Aorangi Oval was again the best for the season and that they will be continuing to bring teams here. Lee also spent some time talking to the young up and coming cricketers about the pathways that are there now for young cricketers to make a living from the game, before recounting some humorous episodes from his debut test as NZ captain and more stories about some countries he had the opportunity to visit, especially the cultural happenings on a tour to the West Indies. At the end of the main awards ceremony for individuals and teams, Andrew McRae made three special presentations to people who have made significant contributions to cricket in our region. He asked Harvey King who had spent a lot of time with the recipients to present the gifts. First up was John Threlkeld who retired over winter after 26 seasons as coach of the South Canterbury Primary A team. During that time his teams won three tournaments, and youngsters like Craig Cumming and Hamish Bennett have gone on to play for New Zealand. John also took his turn as a Board member for South Canterbury Cricket as well as officiating as an Umpire for many seasons too. Recognition of the services he gave to junior cricket was recognised by NZ Cricket when John won the Sir Jack Newman Award, a prestigious national award for services to junior cricket a few years ago. The second presentation was made to Graeme Lowrie for his contributions to the Umpires and Scorers in the local region, his recruitment and training of these people and for his help producing the SCCA handbooks for both afternoon and JAB grades for several years too. Graeme also produced several books during his time, including "Seasons of Cricket" the South Canterbury history which he produced alongside Muriel Pennal and the late Rex Bowden as well as numerous instruction manuals which are now used for umpire training in NZ and throughout the world. The final presentation was made to Richard Davidson for his 10 years service as Development Coach for South Canterbury (the longest by anyone in NZ) as well as the various other tasks he performed over and above his duties as coach of numerous teams from Senior Men to Girls U15. While Richard was unable to attend, he was given a rousing applause for the work and effort he put in during his time.
The crowd then enjoyed some supper and those that didn't rush off to watch Super15 enjoyed a yarn and discussion about the season.
