South Canterbury made an outstanding start to the Canterbury regional under-15 cricket tournament in Timaru this week with Tom Walsh and Simon Ward contributing a 208-run opening stand first up against West Coast at Aorangi.

After winning the toss and batting, South Canterbury took it to the West Coasters. Skipper Walsh was first out for 108 in the 42nd over and Ward was dismissed in the final over trying to force the pace on 108.

Adam Simpson managed a quickfire 22 to help South Canterbury reach a final total of 273-4. For the West Coast R Ellen had the best bowling figures of 3- 51 off 10 overs.

In reply West Coast lost wickets on a regular basis with only one substantial partnership, – 54 runs between L Tutty (43) and J Gibbons (33). West Coast were dismissed for 157 in the 49th over.

The best bowling figures for South Canterbury were M Spurdle 3-17 and J MacFarlane 2-24. The fielding by South Canterbury was of a high standard with six catches and a run out featuring in the dismissals.

Other day one results: ChCh Metro Red 186-4 (C McConchie 45, A Yugaraja 69) beat the Composite Side 185 (M King 43, J Richards 38 and J Harper 35).

Canterbury Country 265 (H Nicholls 37, M Dobbs 41 and D Philips 41; M Grafton 3-50 and B Lawry 3-58) beat Buller 104 (J Schwas 3-11).

ChCh Metro Black 284 beat Mid-Canterbury 87 (K Belcher 4-29).

All games on day two were abandoned after the first 50 overs due to rain.

Playing the composite team South Canterbury won the toss and batted on a good wicket and very quick outfield at Mountainview High School.

This time a new opening pair of Tim Leonard (81) and Willie Wright (37) got the home side off to a great start with an opening partnership of 113 runs in 18 overs. It didn't get any easier for the Composite Side, fielding in bitterly cold southerly winds, with the arrival of yesterday's centurions.

Simon Ward (72) and Tom Walsh (50) maintained their run scoring with an 80-run partnership in 13 overs. With contributions from Adam Simpson (28) and Jared Matthews (13 not out), South Canterbury reached 332-8 at the end of 50 overs.

For the Composite Side the best bowling figures were D Brostoy 3-71 and G Wroe 2-47.

Despite the cold wet weather the players were keen to keep going and the Composite Side got off to a positive start scoring 26 runs off the first five overs with M King (15 not out) and J Richards (5 not out). Unfortunately what could have been a very entertaining match was terminated with the onset of more rain.

SC U15 playing Canterbury Country in the U15 final at Mountainview High School. Under the eye of umpire Geoff Talbot, South Canterbury's Blair Brown bowls against Canterbury Country in the Canterbury under-15 regional cricket tournament at Mountainview High School yesterday.

South Canterbury failed to build on a solid start and were beaten by Canterbury Country in the final of the Canterbury under-15 regional cricket tournament at Mountainview yesterday.

South Canterbury batted first and were given a solid start with a 45 run opening partnership. With Tom Walsh making his way to 56 South Canterbury were poised, at 117-3, to build a big score.

The game changed swiftly when Walsh was run out and the middle and lower order didn't handle the pressure as well as they might have.

Sam Carlaw scored 27 and Simon Ward 18, but on a good batting pitch it was far from being a match winning total. For Country Jed Robertson took 4-24 with the ball.

South Canterbury were not prepared to give up without a fight and they took six wickets before Country passed their toal with Jarrod Matthews, 2-16, Carlaw 2-39 and Brown 1-19 picking up wickets.

South Canterbury didn't give their bowlers sufficient runs to successfully defend and it was a disappointing end to a week that promised so much.

There were compensations when South Canterbury had seven players named in the Canterbury Red and Canterbury Black teams selected to play in the Southern Zone tournament with Otago at Ilam in January.

The tournament opens with the Canterbury teams playing each other, Otago do the same, followed by matches against Otago Blue and Otago Gold.

The teams selected were:

South Canterbury's Blair Brown was named as one of five reserve players.

The results of day three games:
