Patron & Life Member
of the SCCUA Passes Away
Walter
(Wally) Lachlan Ditfort
21 June 1921 – 11 October 2007
One of the great characters of South Canterbury cricket
passed away in Waimate on 11 October 2007.
Wally Ditfort played cricket in his school years in
Christchurch and then in the Christchurch Suburban league. For more than
55 years he was an active umpire, both in Christchurch and in South Canterbury.
Patron and a life member of the South Canterbury Cricket Umpire's Association.
Wally reluctantly retired from active umpiring 10 years
ago, a decision forced upon him because of a cricket injury sustained
as a player more than 60 years earlier.
Wally was also a rugby referee in Christchurch for
some 25 years. Wally and his wife Joyce were regular spectators whenever
their favourite team was playing.
On his retirement from umpiring, Wally took up bowls
and played for the Victoria Park Bowling Club. Wally's farewell took place
at St Augustine's Church, Waimate on 16-10-2007.
