South Canterbury Cricket Association Awards 2020-2021 Season
Below you can find the list of cricket award winners for the 2020 – 2021 cricket season.
Congratulations to all trophy or award winners, and hard luck to close runners-up, both teams and individuals.
The prizegiving ceremony was held on Wednesday evening, March 31st 2021 at the Aorangi Park Pavilion. It was great to be able physically front up for the ceremony after COVID had meant the cancellation of the ceremony in 2020.
MC for the night Julian Blanchard ran the show with his usual aplumb, keeping things moving while interacting with those giving out awards, receiving awards and those watching.
A moments silence was held to remember our former Patron John Ward who passed away this season.
Harvey King was congratulated on accepting the honour of being the new South Canterbury Cricket Patron and was invited to award the various cups and trophies as part of that new role, which of course he did very well.
The South Canterbury Cricket Association Board’s Chair, Rebecca Brookland then welcomed all the attendees, thanked all the volunteers, coaches, administrators, fellow board directors and staff for all their work over the last season to get cricket up and running despite Covid, reflected on another successful year on the field of play and congratulated all award recipients.

Jacob Naylor
For the Senior Cricketer who Epitomizes the Way the Game should be Played: Decided by Umpires:
Jacob Naylor – the Canterbury Regional Umpires said that when the Hawke Cup schedules and umpiring appointments for each season are published, South Canterbury is one of the most sort after locations, because they have a good location, host us well, and importantly we have no issues dealing with their captain Jake Naylor who is happy to chat with us and keeps his team concentrating on what they do, not the opposition which makes the whole experience a pleasure to umpire.

Jacob Naylor – the other players felt that as captain Jake led the team from the front all season, and gave great motivational talks, gave the team a ‘gee up’ as needed and commands huge respect even though he may have battled his own form at times. Also instrumental in helping team bonding and “making practices fun”.

GRAEME BLANCHARD MEMORIAL TROPHY
Caleb Donaldson
For a youth cricketer who displays an excellent attitude on and off the field for fair play, a team player who inspires the spirit of cricket and has good work ethics:
Caleb Donaldson – Has a reputation over many seasons of working very hard on his own game, regularly practicing in his own time and is always at whatever practices he is asked to attend, fills in for any games, helps umpire at junior tournaments and this last year all that hard work has really shown through. After scoring a fifty for the South Canterbury A side he was selected for the Hawke Cup side where he was asked to open and played two great innings on debut, including a fifty and chimed in with 3 wickets as he helped his side beat Southland outright.
He is also the recipient of the Winchester Scholarship at TBHS this year but may not get the opportunity to travel to the UK, but this also shows the respect he has for his on and off field demeanour and play.
Statistically in the Canterbury 1st XI competition in Christchurch he scored 582 runs over 13 matches for Timaru Boys, averaging 48.5 and topped the bowling table with 38 wickets at an average of 14.37.
In inter-schools he had a major influence on the match when TBHS won the Mark Parker Memorial when defeating Otago Boys for the first time in over a decade scoring 88 not out.
He scored 121 runs in his 3 Hawke Cup games and also took 8 wickets there too as well as playing 4 matches for Temuka when TBHS didn’t have a game.
Caleb is a non-demonstrative lad who works very hard at his own game, plays in the right spirit and gets on well with his peers and coaches, is always keen to help umpire or work helping others and is a very worthy recipient of this award.
![SOUTH CANTERBURY SUPPORTERS CLUB TROPHY](https://www.southcanterburycricket.co.nz/news/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/phil-brophy.jpg)
SOUTH CANTERBURY SUPPORTERS CLUB TROPHY
Phil Brophy
To Player/Umpire/Administrator who contributes most on or off the field::
Phil Brophy – Phil was instrumental in getting the Twizel Cricket Club under way some years ago after they got the numbers to separate from Pleasant Point and form their own club. From those early beginnings they now boast an artificial pitch and 7 junior and youth teams.
However Phil didn’t stop there, he coaches the junior South Canterbury Yr 8 side, travelling from Twizel weekly for practices and again in the weekends where he doubles up coaching a combined Temuka / Twizel JAB A grade team with taking rep matches on Sundays. Always pleasant and easy to deal with, he is organized and has made sure that the systems and processes at Twizel can continue to move forward. I’m glad we don’t pay his fuel bill, but just the travel time alone shows his commitment to cricket.
![ALLAN EDGINTON TROPHY](https://www.southcanterburycricket.co.nz/news/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/dan-laming2.jpg)
ALLAN EDGINTON TROPHY
Dan Laming
FOR SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR:
Dan Laming – what can be said about South Canterbury’s “Mr Cricket” that hasn’t been said already! This season he capped off 23 continuous seasons of senior cricket for the same club by bringing up 10,000 runs, something that we are not aware of ever having been done before in our area. This included 15 centuries and 66 fifties at an average of 43. But its not just the bat as he has also taken 491 wickets at an average of 14 with a best of 9-71 (and the 10th wicket opportunity was dropped!).
Before retiring from rep cricket he played 17 seasons for South Canterbury and in his debut season scored a century in the Hawke Cup challenge.
His standing in cricket is best summed up by the first question by opposing captains at the toss, “Is Dan playing?
Dan has been the measure of skill, ability and attitude that all cricketers coming through aspire to, and is definitely a very worthy recipient of our “Sports Person of the Year” award.
