South Canterbury Cricket Association Awards 2021-2022 Season

Outstanding Club Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year (JAB Yr 7 & 8):

Sam Brophy (Twizel, Temuka, SC) – 403 club runs at 100.75 (8 not outs) with a best of 70 not out. Took 8 wickets at an average of 20 with a best of 2/23, 2 catches and 3 run out assists.

Sportsmanship and Spirit of Cricket Award at the South Island Schoolgirls Festival – Christchurch:

Camryn Linton (Pleasant Point, Craighead, SC)

Best Colts Grade Player:

Jordan Sew Hoy (Waimate) – Scored 512 runs at an average of 128 with a high score of 101 not out alongside 5 fifties and also took 21 wickets @ 5.24 and 8 catches.

Best Player at Year 11 & 12 Festival:

Toby Clemett (TBHS, Celtic, SC) (Shared with Krishna Sridhar ) – as selected by the coach, Toby captained the team and finished 3rd in aggregate runs  overall for the festival including a best of 59 not out.

Outstanding South Canterbury Player at the South Island Schoolboy’s Festival – Alexandra:

Phoenix Smith (Waihi, SC) – was the leading batsman for the whole tournament with 237 runs at an average of 79 which included 3 fifties with a high score of 82.

SCCA Cup Best Player at Primary Year 7 Festival:

Sam Buckingham (Pleasant Point, SC) – Scored 72 runs averaging 24 with a high score of 52 Took 3 wickets at 13.3, held 3 catches and was an assist in a run out.

Best Player Year 9 & 10 Festival:

Flynn Brookland (Celtic, TBHS, SC) – scored 101 runs with a best of 96, as well as wicketkeeping well. Unfortunate not to score more runs but was unable to play one match due to a family bereavement.

Best Cricketer Under 21:

William Sharp (Pleasant Point, SC) – represented South Canterbury and Pleasant Point. Scored 361 runs in senior with three half centuries and a high score of 88. Picked up useful wickets at club and rep level.

Club Bowler of the Year:

Matt Brown (Pleasant Point) – Took 34 wickets at 10.74 which included a best effort of 5/29 to head off 3 players tied for second after picking up 3/29 in the T20 final, the last game of the season.

Rep Batsman of the Year:

Liam Beck (Pleasant Point, SC) – scored 110 runs with a top score of 81

GALWEY TROPHY – Senior CLUB Batsman of the Year:

Adam Beck (Pleasant Point) – Scored 620 runs at 38.74 including 5 fifties with a top score of 98 not out.

For Player who Contributed Most on and off the field for the Senior Rep team: Chosen by Coach and Players.:

Daniel Campbell (Star/Celtic, SC) – The heartbeat of the side and excellent team man. A good leader and was great with the younger members of the side. Wears his heart on his sleeve and really respected what it is to play for South Canterbury.

For the Senior Cricketer who Epitomizes the Way the Game should be Played: Decided by Umpires:

Josh Rooney (Temuka)

For a youth cricketer who displays an excellent attitude on and off the field for fair play, a team player who inspires the spirit of cricket and has good work ethics:

Toby Clemett (TBHS, Celtic, SC) – Has always been in rep teams ahead of his year and peers culminating this year in being selected for the NZ Cricket Youth Maori side, although has been unable to play any matches for that team as yet due to Covid.

He is the captain this year of the TBHS 1^st XI as well as captaining the South Canterbury Year 11 & 12 team to the Canterbury Regional tournament.

This year he was also selected in the South Canterbury Senior Men’s Hawke Cup side, but again due to the wet season has not had many opportunities to play, but is averaging 24 from the innings he has played.

Toby could have a good future in cricket if he keeps working at his game and this award is an indication that others see him in the same light and would hope that this accolade continues to give him support and the knowledge he can go further.

To Player/Umpire/Administrator who contributes most on or off the field::

Steph Drake (Waimate, Temuka, SC) – Steph has been scoring cricket for many seasons now after initially getting bored trapsing around after her twin brother (Glen – SC Senior Men’s Capt).

But once into scoring she soon became very proficient and as well as senior club matches quickly took over the reins for the South Canterbury men’s side.

Her skills were recognized further up the ladder too and this year it was awesome to have her announced as part of the NZ Cricket Elite Scorer’s group.

She has now scored international White Fern matches for NZ Cricket, scored the England v Pakistan match at Hagley Oval in the recent Women’s World Cup and has been scoring at national age group tournaments for a number of years as well. I am positive that once all those in the powers above realise she meets all the criteria; i.e.  tidy scoring, understands IT, is calm under pressure and nothing fazes her, I’m sure it won’t be long until we see her possibly on the world stage for men’s matches too.

Scorers are often the unsung heroes of our sport, but the games can quickly dissolve into arguments and chaos when the books are wrong, so it is a real bonus that we can recognize Steph this year.
