Temuka and Pleasant Point smash opposition to all parts in comprehensive victories

Author Brayden Lindsay - Timaru Herald

Phill Lill prouded a masterful 82 against Star.

Phill Lill prouded a masterful 82 against Star.

Temuka  Phil Lill and Glen Drake produced a batting masterpiece as they hit the Star bowlers to all parts of Mountainview High School..

The introduction of the white duke cricket ball is proving good for batsmen in the region as a number have started the South Canterbury club cricket season well.

Lill was in impressive form at Mountainview High School as he scored 82, while Drake provided perfect support with 60.

The pair put on 128 for the fourth wicket as they took the game away from Star.

Lill punished anything over pitched with some great lofted shots down the ground and was quick to put anything too short, away over square leg.

He survived one tough chance but was otherwise in top form throughout, in what was a quality knock.

Drake backed up his 61 not out last week with a fabulous knock.

He was superb off his legs and played all the bowlers with intent.

Lill hit four sixes and seven fours in his knock, while left-handed Drake smashed six fours and two glorious slog sweep sixes.

Dinesh de Silva and Warren Morgan carried on the strong hitting with 34 and 31 respectively, while Hayden Broker chipped in with an unbeaten 19 as they racked up and impressive 285-8 from their 45 overs.

Matt Brown was costly with the ball but picked up four wickets including Drake and Lill, while Craig Hinton bowled eight quality overs to nab two wickets.

Star’s run chase wasn’t helped by the fact they were deducted five overs for slow over rate, making the chase even harder.

Brown hit a quick fire 38 but when he was dismissed Star’s chances of chasing down the total went south.

George Morgan hit 20 and Phil McGregor (21) as Star fell for a paltry 138 in comparison.

De Silva bowled superbly taking three for nine off his eight overs, while Dillon Lees cleaned up the tail with 3-17.

Tom Costley for Pleasant Point connects with the ball while Timaru wicketkeeper Sasindu Nanayakkara looks on during their cricket match at Pleasant Point at the weekend.

At the Pleasant Point Domain, the home side recorded an emphatic 77-run victory over Timaru.

Adam Beck (54), Tom Costley (56) and Duncan Macpherson (51) all made half centuries, while Liam Beck smashed 35.

Point recorded a massive 275 batting first in a dominant performance.

Costley whacked six sixes in his 57-ball stay, while Liam Beck smashed two in his 20-ball innings.

Sam Porter and Zane Sanders were the best of the Timaru attack nabbing two wickets each.

In reply, they lost their openers cheaply to South Canterbury quick Stan Mair, who produced an outstanding seven over spell, while Sasindu Nanayakkara with 53 and Josh Smallridge 62 helped restore some pride to the Timaru batting card.

The pair added 66 before Nanayakkara fell, making things tough for Timaru.

Off-spinner Sean Wills was the star of the Point attack nabbing six wickets, including three in four balls.

Next weekend Timaru and Star collide with both teams searching for their first win, while Pleasant Point host Celtic.

At a glance

Temuka 285-8 (P Lill 82, G Drake 60, D de Silva 34, W Morgan 31; M Brown 4-72, C Hinton 2-34) defeated Star138 (M Brown 38, P McGregor 21, G Morgan 20; D de Silva 3-9, D Lees 3-17) by 148 runs, at Mountainview High School.

Pleasant Point 275-6 (T Costley 56, A Beck 54, D Macpherson 51, L Beck 35; S Porter 2-35, Z Sanders 2-60) defeated Timaru 199  (J Smallridge 62, S Nanayakkara 53; S Wills 6-40, S Mair 2-12) by 77 runs, at Pleasant Point Domain.

Glen Drake stars as Temuka knock over defending champions Celtic

Temuka's Glen Drake scored 61 not out and took four wickets in their win over Celtic.

Temuka’s Glen Drake scored 61 not out and took four wickets in their win over Celtic.

South Canterbury Hawke Cup player Glen Drake led the way in the opening round of the South Canterbury Club Cricket competition.

Drake’s patient 61 not out helped Temuka through to a very competitive first up score of 180, before they knocked over defending champions Celtic with Drake claiming four wickets in an 18-run victory at the Celtic Sports Ground.

The batting tallies showed the decision to move to white balls for the 45-over competition could be a positive one, with reasonable opening round scores.

Temuka, who finished last in the one-day competition last year, won the toss and decided to bat first in overcast conditions likely to favour swing bowling.

After losing Shaun Rooney for seven, Willie Stone and Phil Lill put on a 66-run stand before the latter fell for 46 to Adam Hamel, following a good catch from Sam Carlaw.

That saw Drake stride to the crease and he punished anything that was too short and wide.

He anchored the innings beautifully as other batsmen made starts but were unable to kick on.

The left-handed Drake struck eight fours in his 60 ball stay.

Willie Stone contributed 21 and new recruit Dinesh De Silva 14, in a reasonable bowling effort from an under-strength Celtic lineup.

Hamel was the best of the bowlers, nabbing 3-28, while Carlaw chipped in with 2-32 and Ben Watson captured 2-44.

In reply, Celtic were struggling after Rooney and De Silva combined to remove Nigel Caple, Andy Scott, Dan Laming and Jacob Naylor in quick succession.

At 40-5, Celtic looked done, but Carlaw hit a brisk 28, which featured six fours, before he was stumped off Drake.

It looked as though Celtic’s hopes had vanished, but Watson (61) had other ideas as he and Wills Blackstock (20), in his first senior game, combined for an 82-run partnership to put Celtic right back in the clash.

However, Drake stepped up to remove them both and seal the result for Temuka.

De Silva and Rooney also picked up two wickets, while Lill, who was filling in at wicketkeeper, was solid behind the stumps.

The other clash between Star and Pleasant Point was abandoned due to rain which mostly missed the other clash, while Timaru had the bye.

Next Saturday sees Point face Timaru and Star host Temuka while Celtic have the weekend off.

Geraldine Cricket Club Reunion – November 3 & 4

“If you’ve ever held a bat for Geraldine and you want to be part of this reunion, we’d like to see you. It’s time to get cracking though because it’s only four weeks away and we’ve got to tell the caterers how many they’re feeding.”

Geraldine Cricket Club reunion co-organiser, Graham Ellery, says he expects “maybe sixty” former Geraldine cricket club members from a range of eras to register their interest and turn up to the reunion on 3 and 4 November.

“People are coming from all over the place. We’ll meet in the Village Inn on the Friday night and reminisce a bit. Then on the Saturday night there’s a nice dinner in the Domain Pavilion for ex-players and administrators and their partners. We’re hoping that people who’ve made a contribution of any sort to the club will come and bring along some memorabilia and plenty of yarns from their days.”

On the Saturday afternoon, weather permitting, former players have the chance to sit around the boundary at the “sacred acre” and support Geraldine’s second-graders who will be playing at home that day.

To register, former players need to contact Graham Ellery and Neil Wilson via the Geraldine News email address: admin@geraldinenews.co.nz. Instructions about payment and a full list of attendees will be sent out by email to everyone who has shown an interest.

It costs $20 per player to register for the reunion and the dinner will cost $50 a head. The dinner on the Saturday is a BYO event and the organisers will have a Geraldine Community Bus on hand for safe travel home around the Geraldine district.

Womens Quick Smash – Fun New Girls Cricket Competition

South Canterbury Cricket Association is looking to promote the female game in the district by creating a modified competition for all interested females to play.

The competition will be called “Women’s Quick Smash”. It will played on Monday nights starting on the 6th November from 5.30-7pm (90 mins only).

It will be played with an “incrediball” which while still solid is nowhere near as hard as a cricket ball, thus eliminating the need to wear pads, helmets gloves etc.

  • Teams will be 8-a-side, and everybody will bat for the same amount of time (3 overs per pair).
  • If you get out you keep on batting, you just lose some runs off your total.
  • It will be 12 overs per side, with bowlers bowling from one end only.

There is no cost to enter and it is open to all females from primary through to adults. Schools are encouraged to enter teams and clubs as well.

If you can make up a team you can enter by ringing South Canterbury Cricket or emailing Shane Gilkison or Mark Medlicott.

Alternatively if you are an individual who is keen to take part, then get in touch and we will make sure you are allocated a team in which to play.

At this stage, depending on numbers we plan to have 6 rounds prior to Xmas (Nov-Dec) and 6 rounds after Xmas (Feb-March).

More information will be sent out nearer to the start.

Please get in touch if you would like to participate or with any questions.

Buller Cricket 150th Jubilee

The Buller Cricket Association celebrates 150 years of Cricket on the weekend of the 18/19 November 2017.

Cricket first began in Buller in 1866 and the first really organised games took place in 1867. Since then, cricket has always been the major summer sport in the district. For the first 30 years or so cricket operated on a club basis and what we would now regard as inter-Association matches were handled by clubs.

Early in the 20th Century Buller became an Association in its own right and since then has always been an independent District Association and is currently affiliated to Canterbury.

Buller has had three New Zealand representatives in its ranks over the years and has produced a number of provincial reps.

Buller won the Hawke Cup, the pinnacle of District Cricket in NZ in 2015.

We thank you in anticipation of your support.
Regards

Steve Griffin
Secretary Jubilee Committee.

Pitch Preparation Help for Clubs

NZ Cricket has just released a great new guide for the preparation of cricket wickets in New Zealand, knowing how much rolling to do, learning about disease management, what to look for, when to do things and much more.

So with the season not far away visit our resources page and download the guides.

These are the ideal starting place to learn, especially if you have been given the pitch job and are a bit scared to ask for more help, now you should have a much better formula to work with.

Vacancy: Canterbury Cricket – Capability Support Manager

Canterbury Cricket are passionate about supporting the volunteers and administrators that make our summer game a success.

The Capability Support Manager role has been established to support volunteers within District and Sub-Associations, Clubs and Schools throughout the Canterbury region. This role will work alongside organisations to establish systems, policy, planning templates and measures to increase organisational effectiveness and efficiency.

Canterbury Cricket: Inspiring Through our Game

As part of the NZC One Cricket Review, capability support was recognized as one of the top three areas needing resource and attention. Canterbury Cricket are seeking to employ a Capability Support Manager to give the District and Sub-Association members, clubs and schools the best chance of success through increasing their effectiveness in delivery of our game.
The Capability Support Manager is a full time permanent position reporting directly to the General Manager – Community Cricket. The role forms part of the shared service support team. It will work out of the CCA office and link with the Game Development staff and Cricket Managers as part of the newly developed structure for community cricket delivery. We are seeking a person who can work alongside volunteers and support them ‘to do the job they do’, building their off-field capability and to keep cricket as NZ’s top summer sport.

At Canterbury Cricket we value courage, respect and integrity and have enormous pride and passion for the red and black colours that have been worn by our cricketers for over 100 years. In line with our vision, we are seeking candidates for this new, innovative Capability Support Manager role at one of the most successful sporting organisations in New Zealand.

We are looking for:

  • High level of knowledge and appreciation of sport governance and capability
  • A proven track record of working alongside and influencing volunteers
  • A person with the character and passion that will fit into our existing team
  • Excellent relationship skills
  • Ideally someone with respect of and understanding for the Canterbury and New Zealand sporting landscape

If this role interests you and you feel you could contribute in a positive way to the Canterbury Cricket family then we want to hear from you. Candidates should email a CV and covering letter to Simon Hill, GM of Community Cricket at shill@canterburycricket.org.nz .

Local Umpire John Bromley appointed to NZC National Panel 2017/18

John Bromley - NZC National Panel Umpire

John Bromley – NZC National Panel Umpire

Great news for local South Canterbury cricket umpire John Bromley who has just learned that he has been appointed to the NZ Cricket National Panel for the coming season. This puts John at the top level for NZ after previously being a member of the Reserve Panel for the last few seasons.

While this means we will probably see less of John at local club fixtures, it is great reward for an umpire who through the matches he has already done has shown good decision making and match management when he has had opportunities.

This may also give him more opportunities to possibly progress to International match fixtures so we wish him all the best for the 2017/18 season.

Apologies if you have seen this twice, but had to withdraw original news item until it was officially official this afternoon!

Job Vacancy: Senior Representative Coach

South Canterbury Cricket has a vacancy for a Senior Representative Coach.

The role is primarily focussed on the preparation, coaching and development of the South Canterbury senior representative team which participates in Zone 4 of the Hawke Cup as well as playing several other provincial matches during the season.

Additional responsibilities include coaching the South Canterbury Emerging Players squad and assisting with the development of age group representative players.

Applicants should ideally possess a New Zealand Cricket coaching qualification.

Ideally the successful applicant will be able to start the position in July/August 2017.

For a full job description or further questions please contact Mark at the South Canterbury Cricket office on sccricket@xtra.co.nz.

Applications close May  31st.

Adrian (AC) Cunningham. This was a game between Temuka V Timaru. The batsman on strike (AC Cunningham) played at a quick delivery from Dinesh De Silva. The ball swung late, heading towards leg stump. The ball went down to fine leg. The two batsmen ran one single. AC Cunningham got to the non-strikers end, and said straight away.

“Ump I never hit the ball and I never played a shot at the ball, would you like to withdraw the run”.

The umpire called and signal dead ball to the scorers, and got an acknowledgement from the scorers. The two batsman returned to their original ends. We feel that AC’s attitude to the game has improved especially over the last 2 seasons, and are happy to award him this trophy.

SOUTH CANTERBURY SUPPORTERS CLUB TROPHY – To player/Umpire/Administrator who contributes most on or off the field:

David Fisher – David as you will know has been Chairman of the SC Board of Control for the last 2 years and takes a very active hands on approach. He has coached the Primary Yr 5&6 side previously and the Primary A side the last 2 seasons and now is looking after a TBHS side as well as the SC U15s. You can find him at matches most weekends, morning and afternoon, and as a volunteer certainly gives 110% to anything he is involved with. This award shows that his efforts are appreciated, but not an excuse to stop just yet!

ALLAN EDGINTON TROPHY for Sports Personality of the year:

South Island Primary Schools Cricket Tournament (SIPSCT) Organising Committee.

The organizing committee led by Chairman Harvey King alongside John Davies, Peter Scott, Richard Davidson, John Threlkeld, Peter Walsh, David Fisher and Mark Medlicott spent over a year putting together the 2017 tournament which proved to be one of the most successful tournaments ever run. Reports from final round of JAB rep matches v Chch Metro

Primary A

On a perfect cricket day, whether wise, the SC Primary A Cricket Team faced upto a strong Christchurch Metro Year 8 team at a slow but picturesque Waihi pitch.  With the outfield wet from overnight showers Christchurch won the crucial toss and promptly asked SC to bat.

After a solid start with the openers Flynn Smith and Elie Kerse got through to 19 before losing Flynn in the 6th over.  This brought captain Toby Clemett to the crease, who top scored with a well compiled 47.  Only two other batsman made double figures, Lucas Histon 28 and Fletcher Rhodes 14,  in a stuttering innings which was hampered by the slow outfield.  SC’s total of 162 was boosted by 41 extras with all of Canterbury’s players having a bowl.

With a score on the board that the team felt was defendable they headed out into the field with some confidence.  This was helped when Luke Slee picked up one of the openers, assisted by a good catch from Naveen Sridhar.  Unfortunately wickets dried up after this and the two Canterbury batsman batted freely with both scoring at a good clip.  The SC bowlers weren’t able to build pressure on the batsman and with the outfield now dry the batsman were getting good value for their shots.  A fine partnership of 100 runs was only broken with the retirement of the opening batter after reaching his half century.  At drinks Canterbury needed a further 30 runs and it looked a formality but SC staged a fightback with the introduction of Clemett to the bowling crease.  He completed a good match personally with figures of 3 for 12 from 6 overs.  Metro eventually reached the target 5 wickets down in the 37th of their 45 overs.

It has been an encouraging start to the new representative season with a very inexperienced, but keen, team at this level.  The coaches and management wish the boys well for their winter sporting endeavours and look forward to working with them again next summer in the lead up to the South Island Primary A tournament in Nelson.

Primary Development (Yr 7)

South Canterbury Primary Development vs. Christchurch Metro Year 7, played at Waihi School.

SC won the toss and decided to bat.

Most of the top order got good starts after losing a wicket to the first ball of the match. Liam Simpson scored quickly adding a well compiled 28 to the total. Lachie Munro batted till drinks retiring on 25, playing a good supporting role. Jordy Sew Hoy made a very good 50 with some excellent shots all around the wicket. Primary Yr 5 & 6

Another great win for the South Canterbury year 5/6 team.

Today they took on Canterbury Metro at the Geraldine oval South Canterbury were asked to bat first on a slow damp wicket , Metro s bowling was steady but hard to hit through the field and resulted in Sc struggling early on losing 6 wickets for 38 runs at the half way stage A second consecutive 50 ( retired) to Jed Mckerrow and 20 for Hamish Caird produced a 50 run partnership at exactly the right time .

South Canterbury batted all their 40 overs to finish with 129/8 Now South Canterburys turn to bowl and this would mean they needed to dismiss their opponents not just restrict them for victory and as it happened it came down to the last over Metro needed 8 off the last over , but Ben Blakemore delivered a perfect over only conceding 1 run and taking a vital wicket He finished with figures of 2 for 8 off 6 overs Connor Howes was also outstanding at the bowling crease recording figures of

3 for 13 off 6 overs , his accuracy and length were key on this type of wicket

2 more run- outs this week were also a key to a well executed victory over the Canterbury boys Great finish to the season for this promising team , the huge smiles and high 5s were certainly the icing on the cake Bring on next season
