Willie Wright blasts quick fire century for Celtic win

A sublime century by Celtic’s Willie Wright saw his team crush Star in the second round of the modified senior cricket competition.

Batting at No.5 Wright bludgeoned the Star bowlers across the park, hitting eight sixes in his quick fire 100.

He also brought his century up with a six but was out the next ball when he missed a straight one but by then the damage was well and truly done.

It was the wicketkeeper’s first century in senior cricket and it came of 60-odd balls.

No.4 batsman Dan Laming was unlucky not to also bring up his ton, out for 90, but the pair put on a 182 run partnership to shut Star out of the game, with a total of 302.

Sam Carlaw then had Star in a spin grabbing five wickets as they struggled to 131 all out, with only three batsmen getting into the twenties.

The win gave Celtic maximum points again and comfortable lead in the competition after two rounds.

Celtic have 18 points and the next best is Star on nine, with Temuka on five, Timaru four and Pleasant Point have yet to register a point but had the bye on Saturday.

The top side automatically qualifies for the final with second and third playing off in the elimination final.

Home side Temuka edged out Star in the other senior game.

Temuka made 159-9 and Timaru finished at 152-9, seeing both sides share points under the competition rules, with Temuka getting five and Timaru four.

For the Magpies Warren Morgan made 40 and Adrian Cunningham  35, while Dillion Lees and Hayden Broker made sure their tail wagged with 20 and 29 respectively.

Dinesh De Silva and Prabodha Arthavidu grabbed three wickets each with  Arthavidu grabbing the valuable wicket of Glen Drake, caught and bowled for 0.

Timarus third Sri Lankan then starred with the bat.

Batting at No.4 Supeshala Jayathilake made 75  but found little support top order support.

Brad Leonard contributed a valuable 27 batting at nine as Timaru tried to chase down the total but fell eight runs short.

Ben Thomson and Lleyton Phillips were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each.

Liam Cotter also executed an excellent run out to get rid of TBHS’s danger man Shaun Rooney for eight.

Roncalli then cruised past the total four down.

Opener Ed Heenan (15 ) and Ben Davenport (22 not out) saw off the opening bowlers while Toby Scannell added a quick fire 26 to see Roncalli comfortably home in the 19 over.

Star’s ‘Nice Garry’ leaves Pleasant Point in plenty of Paine

The saying ‘Nice Garry’ echoed around Mountainview High School on Saturday as Star allrounder Garry Paine helped his side to a nine-wicket win over Pleasant Point.

The saying, started by Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade to motivate team-mate Nathan Lyon, proved apt as Paine contributed with bat and ball.

He nabbed the first four wickets in Point’s batting effort, then returned with bat in hand to bludgeon an unbeaten 63 to easily chase down the 115 required to win.

Saturday was the opening round of the South Canterbury modified one-day competition and Star and Celtic bagged maximum points.

Pleasant Point were in trouble early against Star, reduced to 26-6 thanks to Star’s opening bowling duo of Paine and Brayden Lindsay.

Paine’s crafty skills with the ball saw him dismiss Tim Leonard (2), Bailey Dryden (1), Al Harvey (10) and Will Harvey (4) to have them reeling at 18-4.

Point’s lower order tried their best to resurrect things with Sean Wills batting superbly for 43, while Latham Gibb made 21 and Al Brady 20.

Wills showed lots of patience before falling to Lindsay.

Leg spinner Dale Warwood picked up two wickets for Star, while Hamish Dickson bagged the other.

In reply, Adam Fahey fell for 8 in what was otherwise a superb chase from Star.

Paine led the way, while Phil McGregor made an unbeaten 34.

Celtic carried on last weekend’s strong form with a dominant display against Temuka.

After putting the visitors into bat, the green machine made immediate inroads.

Warren Morgan went for 1 and while Jamie Trezise (19), Nick Maguire (17 not out) and Josh Rooney (14) all made double figures, the rest of the order fell quickly, leaving Temuka with 81 to defend.

Dan Laming was again outstanding with the ball, nabbing three wickets.

Tom Pavletich also got three, while Ben Watson picked up two.

The small total was never going to be enough with Willie Wright in a punishing mood as he smashed 49 not out to get the team home in just 14 overs.

Pavletich made 15 and Jeremy Liddy 11 not out.

Celtic and Star will clash next weekend leaving one team unbeaten, while Temuka and Timaru do battle with both teams after a victory.

Disappointing first innings batting performance sees South Canterbury beaten outright

South Canterbury’s chances of challenging for the Hawke Cup are over.

Stan Mair bowling against Southland at Aorangi Oval. Mair was South Canterbury's best in a frustrating performance.

Stan Mair bowling against Southland at Aorangi Oval. Mair was South Canterbury’s best in a frustrating performance.

The side needed an outright victory against Southland to keep their hopes alive but instead suffered one against a clinical opposition.

Again South Canterbury’s inability to score first-innings runs hampered the side for the second time in a row.

Southland took most of their chances in the field, were more patient with the bat on the opening day and stood strong when it mattered most in an entertaining clash.

South Canterbury won the toss and put Southland into bat on a green Aorangi Oval wicket.

Opener Rhuebyn Prattley scored 13 off just nine deliveries before falling to James Blackstock, who ended with five wickets in the match.

South Canterbury chipped away at the Southland lineup taking wickets at regular intervals.

Otago Volts top order batsman Ryan Duffy top scored with a patient 49 before South Canterbury’s part time seamer James Laming snuck one through his defences, while Amarpreet Singh scored 34 off just 30 balls, before falling to Craig Hinton.

Southland made 193 batting first, a score South Canterbury would have backed themselves to get.

Jacob Naylor went first ball to a good delivery from Bailey Andrews-Kennedy, while three of the South Canterbury batsmen got starts.

Debutant Supeshala Jayathilake showed plenty of fight to end 42 not out, Liam Beck made 36 before a loose shot ended his innings and Glen Drake hit 22 before he played round a Jason Domigan delivery.

Stan Mair and James Laming made double figures but the rest was slim pickings as the hosts folded for just 131.

South Canterbury started well with the ball in Southland’s second innings reducing them to 18-3 before a Laming dropped catch proved costly.

Blackstock had picked up three early scalps and looked to have a fourth in James Ng before Laming failed to take the catch.

Southland's James Ng batting against South Canterbury in their Hawke Cup clash at Aorangi Oval.

He then went on to make 30, before finding Stan Mair in the deep.

Duffy carried on from the first innings making 86 with a number of well timed shots through the off side on both the front and back foot.

Jason Osborne hit a quick fire 26 not out off 14 balls, while Hamish O’Brien (18) and Jason Domigan (15) made starts.

Mair picked up four wickets to help bowl Southland out for 206.

South Canterbury needed 269 for victory and gave it a good crack.

Laming and Arthavidu fell early but Naylor and Beck played superbly.

Naylor (71) punished anything he could get his hands to in his 81-ball stay, while Beck (57) played a number of strong aerial shots through the off side.

Osborne, who took four second innings wickets removed the dangerous Naylor, while Beck fell to Domigan, again trying to go over the top.

Sam Carlaw hit three fours in a row before being bowled, then Mair batted superbly to score a defiant 50 not out.

Blackstock was the last man out to Duffy, who backed up his batting deeds with four wickets, giving Southland a 38-run win.

Southland sit top with 32 points and earning them a challenge no matter what happens with Otago Country next weekend as they defeated them in their clash in Alexandra.

Otago Country sit second with 20 and face Mid Canterbury next weekend, North Otago and South Canterbury are tied on 17 and Mid Canterbury have 0.

Celtic’s experience secures them yet another crown in South Canterbury Twenty20 competition

By BRAYDEN LINDSAY, Timaru Herald

They say nothing beats experience and on Saturday, Celtic proved the adage correct.

The 2016 South Canterbury one-day champions added the Twenty20 crown to their collection with a comfortable five-wicket win over Pleasant Point.

It now gives them eight successive Twenty20 crowns to go with their 10 one-day titles they have won on the trot.

Celtic made it through to the final after defeating Timaru in the semifinal, earlier in the morning.

Batting first, Timaru lost wickets at regular intervals and could only manage 118-8.

Glenn Matthew was superb up front for Celtic picking up 1-9 off his four overs, while Ben Watson nabbed three wickets, including both Timaru’s openers Josh Smallridge and Hayden Leonard cheaply.

Supeshala Jayathalike looked good in his short stay at the crease but hit a ball straight to James Laming in the deep.

Prabodha Arthavidu, who was nursing a sore shoulder, batted beautifully for the red and blacks on his way to 41 until he was superbly stumped by Willie Wright.

Josh Dick added a fighting 27 not out but it was in vain as Timaru struggled to score.

It was a superb fielding effort from Celtic.

In reply, they went about knocking the runs off quickly.

James Laming smashed 68 opening the innings, before Wright added a quick fire 34 batting at first drop, which included three big sixes.

The 86-run partnership between Laming and Wright ensured they made it through to the final.

Against Point, Celtic captain Sam Carlaw turned the match in his side’s favour with a superb spell of bowling.

He picked up 4-7, including the big wicket of captain Tim Leonard for 26, and hard hitter Brad Tegelaars for 4, before wrapping up the tail.

Dan Laming nabbed two wickets including Point’s Adam Beck, who made 40, before finding the hands of Jacob Naylor, who took a good catch looking over his shoulder.

From here Point struggled, with Liam Beck (16) and Will Harvey (15) making double figures.

Celtic lost a couple of wickets early with Andy Scott and James Laming falling to quick bowler Stan Mair.

Andrew Buckingham saw Celtic home with an unbeaten 30, hitting three fours in succession off Mark Otley to win the match.

Wright backed up his 34, with a hard hitting 26, while Dan Laming chipped in with 17.

Point’s Tegelaars and Mair bowled will but the country side didn’t have enough runs on the board to put Celtic under any real pressure.

Short scoreboards:

Timaru 118-8 (P Arthavidu 41, J Dick 27 not out, B Leonard 13; B Watson 4-0-36-3, S Carlaw 4-0-19-2, G Matthews 4-1-9-1) lost to Celtic 120-3 off 14.2 overs (J Laming 68, W Wright 34) by six wickets.

Pleasant Point 111 (A Beck 40, T Leonard 26, L Beck 16, W Harvey 15; S Carlaw 3-0-7-4, G Matthews 4-0-23-2, D Laming 2.2-0-17-2) lost to Celtic 114-5 off 17.3 overs (A Buckingham 30 not out, W Wright 26, D Laming 17; S Mair 4-0-21-2, B Tegelaars 4-0-20-1) by five wickets.

South Canterbury’s challenge chances take nose dive with first innings defeat

South Canterbury’s chances of challenging for the prestigious Hawke Cup have taken a hit.

They suffered a first innings loss to Otago Country in their match at Molyneux Park in Alexandra.

The green-and-whites were hoping to earn at least first innings points to put the pressure back on Southland, but with only one Hawke Cup match remaining, they need other teams’ results to go their way to earn a challenge.

South Canterbury’s Nathan McNicol and Stanley Mair’s match up with opposition quick Sam Blakely was an exciting one, as all three starred at different times.

The visitors won the toss against Otago Country and decided to bat first. After losing Adam Beck for 0, bowled by former Otago Volts seam bowler Sam Blakely, Jacob Naylor and James Laming restored things for South Canterbury.

They added 50 for the second wicket until Naylor was bowled by Swaran Sandhu for 14.

Laming who was captaining the side, continued to lead the way and made it to 47 before he became Sandhu’s second victim.

Key batsman Prabodha Arthavidu fell shortly after for 3 to leave South Canterbury teetering at 68-4.

Liam Beck was joined at the crease by Glen Drake and the pair put on a good 107-run partnership.

Beck reached his 50 with a flurry of fours before he fell a short time later to Blakely for 51.

Drake perished soon after as he was undone by a good ball from Blakely, with the burly right armer bringing one back into the left hander that hit the stumps.

The lower order offered little resistance as South Canterbury lost their final five wickets for 24 runs.

Blakely and Barry White nabbed three wickets each.

Otago Country lost opener Henry Burns early, before his partner Jonathan Homer received a short ball to the helmet from Nathan McNicol and was forced from the field.

Tim McCormick top scored for the home side with 41, Fraser Wilson made an unbeaten 40 with support coming from Jarred Andrew (29), Barry White (24) and Liam Cotton (20) as they earned first innings honours.

Otago Country declared at 202-7, a three run lead.

Nathan McNicol was South Canterbury’s best with four wickets, while Mark Otley and Craig Hinton bagged the other wickets.

South Canterbury made 211 in their second innings, leaving Otago Country 209 runs to win.

Laming made 45 before falling lbw to Wilson, while Adam Beck (31) and Prabodha Arthavidu (30) also made starts.

Bowler Mark Otley was the final batsman dismissed for 11 as Fraser Wilson picked up five wickets and Blakely grabbed another three to end with six for the match.

Otago Country’s pursuit of 211 started well with Burns and Danny Edwards putting on 36 up top, before Otley struck twice.

Liam Cotton and Tim McCormick scored 31 and 47 respectively to help Otago Country into a strong position.

However, the home side got the wobbles and lost six wickets for nine runs.

But South Canterbury ran out of overs as Otago Country ended on 120-8.

Stanley Mair picked up three wickets in four overs, while Glen Drake nabbed a couple.

The result sees South Canterbury slip to third place behind Southland and Otago Country on 20 points.

Wet weather ruins South Canterbury’s chances against North Otago

Story by Brayden Lindsay, Fairfax. Photos by Tetsuro Mitomo/FAIRFAX NZ

Wet weather and a gritty century to Francois Mostert ruined South Canterbury’s chance of first innings honours against North Otago in a Hawke Cup match at Aorangi Oval.

The green-and-whites were hoping to stamp their authority in this clash and put them in good stead for their next two clashes, but the rain had the final say with the match being abandoned.

North Otago were put into bat, and South Canterbury struck early through Canterbury A representative Nathan McNicol.

He clean bowled Duncan Drew for 2.

McNicol bowled with good pace and was in the wickets once again as he cleaned up fellow opener Dallas Mahuika the same way a short time later.

North Otago looked in early trouble but Craig Smith and Jeremy Smith steadied the ship for the visitors.

The pair put on 60 before Craig became McNicol’s third victim when he was trapped in front.

Jeremy Smith was run out by some good work from debutant Mark Otley off his own bowling, who then picked up Brady Kingan next ball.

Mostert, North Otago’s star over the past three seasons, dug in and frustrated the South Canterbury team.

He punished anything short and scored plenty runs off his pads and through the covers.

Regan George, who was a late callup to the side, made the most of his opportunity smashing 49, before falling to Sam Carlaw.

Blake James made a gritty 35 before he became McNicol’s fourth victim, caught by Jacob Naylor.

He led the way with four wickets, Carlaw picked up two and Otley one, while Stanley Mair and Craig Hinton bowled without reward.

South Canterbury coach Nick Horsley said their missed opportunities in the field proved costly.

“We probably dropped about four regulation chances and that hurt us a bit.

“The bowlers bowled really well but the fielders just let them down at times.”

He said that was the difference to them only batting 2.4 overs instead of 30 to 40, if catches were held.

“It was a good workout for the bowlers and that’s what we wanted. It would have been nice to see the batsmen spend time in the middle but cricket is one of those games and weather can dictate it.”

South Canterbury were 9-0 nearing the end of day one when the rain fell, with no further play on day two.

South Canterbury also lost key batsman Prabodha Arthavidu to a dislocated shoulder, putting him in doubt for next weekend’s key match in Alexandra against Otago Country.

Both teams picked up five points for the washout.

Southland now lead the Southern Zone with 20 points, following their first innings victory over Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury are second with 17, Otago Country have 12, North Otago 5 and Mid Canterbury 0.

The South Canterbury year five and six junior cricket team are forging a fine winning streak.

Following their unbeaten run at their annual Canterbury Districts tournament in Mandeville last week, which they won for the first time, the team is now on a 10-game unbeaten run.

They have been on a victory spree beating a number of Canterbury teams, Canterbury Country and Dunedin Metro sides, all provinces considered to be stronger than South Canterbury and with more playing numbers.

Coach Haden Powell said it was a great effort by the team.

“The boys played really well. They honestly did awesome.

“Winning the tournament was such a good feeling for them.”

To win the tournament the team knocked over three Canterbury teams with ease, while their match against Buller was rained off with South Canterbury well in control.

Game one saw them keep CJCA Fleming to just 113, with Jackson Smith and George Powell picking up three wickets each.

South Canterbury scored 213-8 to secure a comfortable six wicket win with Oliver Linton smashing 52.

Game two saw them face Buller, who they had restricted to 53-7 before the rain came.

Next up was CJCA Hadlee and they made 145, with Jed McKerrow getting three wickets.

Some strong batting saw South Canterbury through to 203-7 with Linton hitting 28, Jordan Sew Hoy 34, Eli Kerse 36 and Kade MacMillan 20.

Their final match was against CJCA McMillan, who they also defeated.

Jackson Smith starred with four wickets as they rolled Canterbury for 96, in reply South Canterbury made 134-6 with Sew Hoy hitting 50.

South Canterbury ended on 41 points, two ahead of Mid Canterbury in second on 39.

He labelled Sew Hoy,  Linton, Smith and Powell as the most consistent players for the team throughout the season.

“Jordan and Oliver scored 50s at the tournament and they batted superbly, while Jackson took loads of wickets and George bowled really well.”

The team had been together for just over a year and Powell said it had been great seeing them transform from when they first came together as a team.

“We used to have to help set the field for them, now Henry the captain is doing it by himself and the guys are getting in a huddle after a wicket and talking about different things, it’s great to see.”

Joining Powell as coaches were Kevin Kerse, who took charge of the batting and Jason Sew Hoy, who looked after the bowlers.

Powell said the most pleasing aspect about the side winning the tournament was everyone stood up at different times.

“I can’t name a time when no one has shone.

“The best thing about this team is that it has been different people starring each game and we just haven’t been relying on the same people.”

He said they had no expectation of winning every game.

“We were honestly just looking at taking it game by game and seeing what would happen.”

They took 12 away to tournament but had another three or four players back in Timaru easily capable of making the team.

“It was tough. We didn’t like making the decisions on who to leave to out, but we had to. We wondered if we had made the right decision at times.

The best thing about it though was that those boys were still part of the team, they made the others perform so they got picked and that’s helped with the team get to where it is.”

He wanted to thank all the parents, who had supported the team at the tournament.

“They were superb, they really bought into the team culture and helped with everything from running a barbecue for the boys to helping put marquees up and various other things.”

Powell hopes most of the side can stay together and that some of the players are selected for the Primary Schools Tournament team in 2018.
