We are looking to employ further coaches to assist over the busy summer period to provide greater coaching cover to all areas of the game.

New South Canterbury Men’s Senior Cricket Coach Announced
The SCCA is pleased to announce that Bruce Carlaw has accepted the role as the South Canterbury Senior Men’s Representative Coach for the 2011/12 season.
Bruce has had a long association with cricket in South Canterbury as a most successful player with both the Celtic club and SC representative sides. Bruce has been heavily involved in coaching with his roles at both Roncalli College and at the Celtic club. We are fortunate to have someone of his calibre to lead our premier side.
Bruce has stated he is keen to meet with all Club Captains/Coaches to discuss the 2011/12 representative programme, player availability and training schedule to ensure he puts out the best team possible.
We hope to be in a position to name a manager in the near future.
Who is Bruce Carlaw?
Bruce Carlaw played senior cricket for Celtic from 1978 to 1998 and played 12 seasons for South Canterbury after making his debut in 1983, captaining the side in his final season. He has made sporadic cameos as a coach for Celtic over the years and last season acted as a player/coach for the Roncalli College team after the school made the step-up to the top grade of South Canterbury senior cricket. He has yet to decide whether he will continue to assist Roncalli this season.

Former South Canterbury and Celtic cricket captain Bruce Carlaw has been named the new South Canterbury cricket coach for the 2011-2012 season.
They 48-year-old beat two other applicants for the role. He will replace Richard Davidson, who had the job while he was South Canterbury Cricket development officer.
Carlaw will only have the senior coaching role to worry about, with South Canterbury Cricket executive officer David Fisher suggesting a new development officer will be announced next month.
Carlaw said he was excited about the role, and was keen “to get systems in place” for the start of the season.
He said he would look to have two selectors to help with watching senior club cricket each week, and to try to attract top players from outside the region to play for South Canterbury.
Carlaw said he was keen to have Celtic club stalwarts Robin Beeby as a selector and John Davies, father of current South Canterbury batsman Craig, to act as manager for the team.
“I want as many people around as possible who can offer advice and bring something to the team.”
Carlaw said he felt Davidson “did not have the assistance from others that he could have had” in the job, and he wanted to change that.
He said he would look to assemble a 15-man winter training squad shortly, with the goal of winning the Hawke Cup.
Carlaw said he was keen to take the team “in a new direction”, which would hopefully lead them to the ultimate prize in New Zealand minor associations cricket.
“I’ll be looking at the attitudes of players, trying to up-the-ante on their attitudes and I will try to get players thinking about their roles, and making them understand what is expected.”
He said he was “not interested in perceptions” and club loyalty would not play a part in the selection of the team, despite the likely heavy Celtic make-up of the management structure.
“I want the best players, if you’re the best player, then you’ll be selected, as simple as that.”
Carlaw said he was keen to meet with all clubs before the season started, and hoped everyone would be on-board for the benefit of the senior representative team.
Fisher said he was delighted to have Carlaw sign-on as coach.
“Bruce has been heavily involved in coaching with his roles at both Roncalli College and at the Celtic club.
“We are fortunate to have someone of his calibre to lead our premier side.”
South Canterbury captain Dan Laming said he was looking forward to working with Carlaw in the representative environment. He welcomedCarlaw’s strong emphasis on fielding and his openness to practices which included more than net sessions.

Sth Cant Girl Janet Brehaut added to White Ferns squad
New Zealand Cricket today confirmed Canterbury Magicians batsman Janet Brehaut will replace Lea Tahuhu in the White Fern’s squad for the One-Day International Quadrangular Series in England.
Brehaut, 22, was part of the White Ferns winter training programme and travelled with the squad to Brisbane for the recent Rose Bowl ODI’s against Australia. Tahuhu has returned to New Zealand for family reasons.
White Ferns coach Gary Stead said: “We feel Janet has the skills and temperament to do extremely well in one-day cricket for the White Ferns.
“She is a talented and exciting batsman and we are confident if the opportunity arises she will perform well at international level.”
White Ferns vice captain and Tahuhu’s Canterbury captain Amy Satterthwaite will also travel home in support of her team mate.
Davo – SC Development Coach Moving On
South Canterbury Cricket development officer Richard Davidson has pulled up stumps after 10 years in the job.
Davidson resigned to take up the opportunity to be a self-employed business owner and will announce his plans soon.
He was sad to be moving on but believed the time was right.
“I made one of the hardest decisions I have made for some time but will be moving on to a new and exciting chapter in my life.”
Davidson leaves the job with many fond memories, good mates and some advice for his employers: “I think the job needs to go to a young guy with coaching aspirations to set the thing on fire.”
Davidson arrived with plenty of passion a decade ago, but realises one can stay in a job too long.
“The job needs to be turned over, or else you can hit a brick wall.”
The development officer believes he leaves with South Canterbury’s junior cricket in very good heart but would like to see all those playing senior cricket make themselves available for the representative side.
Davidson said he would also like to see those who had moved out of the province, especially for higher education, support the province by making themselves available for South Canterbury.
“There needs to be competition for places, people need to be there on merit and earn their place, then we will improve.”
Highlights of his time in the job include watching young players develop and go on to achieve higher honours.
“Watching the likes of Hamish Bennett and Tom Walsh go from schoolboys with talent to mature cricketers was great and shows what can be done from here,” he said.
Davidson said he could not leave without mentioning some of those he became involved with and close to.
“Harvey [King] was inspirational, Graeme Broker is a good mate and all those volunteers in age-group cricket giving their time was superb, I made some good friends.”
South Canterbury Cricket president Andrew McRae said Davidson’s contribution to South Canterbury Cricket had been significant over the past 10 years.
“His commitment to the South Canterbury cause, his enthusiasm for the game of cricket and his hard work ethic will certainly be missed.
“He has identified and assisted some of South Canterbury’s elite cricketers over the years and the association owes a huge debt of gratitude for his contribution.
“The association will certainly miss Richard’s skills, expertise and institutional knowledge but we wish Richard all the best in his future endeavours.”
Rep Team Coaches & Managers
The South Canterbury Cricket Association is in the process of appointing our coaches and managers for representative teams in the 2011/2012 season. This year we are being pro-active in wanting to formalise appointments at the earliest possible opportunity, so that people will know what tournaments and matches they need to be looking to prepare teams for, including winter training, tournaments that teams will be attending and further details as they become available.
We are hoping that all teams will have managers, thus making the jobs easier for coaches who can get on with coaching and managers with management. The Board and office of the SCCA are open to helping plan or show managers what is required in their roles so that the job can be fun and not a burden.
If coaching a team, or taking on a manager’s role is something you would be interested in, please send an expression of interest to the SCCA office along with any supporting information e.g. a manager’s job because your son or daughter may be a team member, or perhaps you wish to give something back to cricket.
South Canterbury Cricket has teams in the following grades;
Senior Men
U18 Boys
U16 Boys
Yr 9 Boys
Senior Women
U17 Girls
U15 Girls
JAB Primary A
JAB Development
JAB Yr 5 + 6
Applications close on Friday the 17th of June.
Waimate all rounder honoured
The driving force behind Waimate’s watershed cricket season has been honoured at the South Canterbury Cricket Awards night.
All rounder Alan Reid received the Club Bowler of the Year award last night after taking 55 wickets at an average of 15 runs per wicket for the season.
He can also lay claim to being the best South Canterbury club player for the season, after shouldering the opening duties with not only the ball, where he took six for 95 from 44 overs in the Tweedy Cup two-day final, but with the bat, where he finished the seventh highest run scorer with 339 runs.
Celtic captain Craig Davies topped the batting statistics yet again with 792 runs at an average of 99 runs per innings.
Reid, who is currently unavailable for the South Canterbury team, also won the Spirit of Cricket Award for how he approached and played the game.
The 33-year-old said he relished the diversity of his role within the club.
He said consistency in players had lead to Waimate’s success.
“It’s been the same core of guys for a while now and it’s been a real team effort to get here.”
Talented teenager Glen Drake relished his first full season as a senior player with Waimate.
Drake was named Young Player of the Year after scoring 532 runs at an average of 26, placing him third in the batting statistics behind Davies and his club captain Jason Sew Hoy.
The left-handed batsman also took 26 wickets with his left-arm off-spin, at an average of 14.
Roncalli College’s opening batsman Tom Pavletich was named under 18 player of the year.
Celtic spinner Sam Carlaw picked up best player in the under 21 and under 23-year-old categories.
Temuka’s Ritchie Preston won the award for best single performance for South Canterbury.
His run-a-ball 110, allowing South Canterbury to take an outright win over Otago Country and keep them in the hunt for a Hawke Cup challenge, which never eventuated.
South Canterbury failed to have one Waimate player in the South Canterbury team this season despite their success.
South Canterbury coach Richard Davidson has hinted Drake would likely receive a call-up next season.
Canterbury Cricket chief executive Lee Germon attended last night’s awards and congratulated South Canterbury Cricket for their recent growth in player numbers.
South Canterbury Cricket president Andrew McRae said they were keen to host more domestic matches next season.
Injured Black Cap and Timaruvian Hamish Bennett was the guest speaker.
Tweedy Cup shared after rain hits play
Despite the batting of Star’s Jack Harper and the bowling of Waimate’s Alan Reid, the Tweedy Cup cricket competition had to be shared.
The weather had the final say, after both teams looked likely to wrestle the trophy from one another at various points throughout the two-day club final.
Harper was an unlikely hero for Star. He was back in South Canterbury to continue his education following the Christchurch earthquake of February 22.
His innings of 107 neutralised the stirring seam-bowling of Reid, who took six for 92 off 44 overs, and looked likely to give his side the advantage as they chased their first title in their 40-year involvement in the competition.
No play was possible until 4pm on the first day due to constant drizzle, effectively making the match a one innings affair.
Waimate won a crucial toss and asked Star to bat, forcing them to try to survive 48 overs until stumps.
The competition’s top wicket-taker, Reid, soon had Alex McKenzie walking back for a duck as he edged a delivery through to wicketkeeper Liam Crowley.
Runs were hard earned, with Star struggling to go at more than one run an over against the accurate bowling of Reid and the left-arm pace of Matthew Sew Hoy.
Star lost two more wickets before stumps, with George Harper becoming Reid’s second victim, for two, and Paul Arkinstall trapped leg-before-wicket to the spin of Glen Drake.
Waimate reduced Star to 59 for three after 35 overs at the close, after bad light stopped play early.
Reid finished the day with two for 22 from his 18 overs, which would have been more impressive had it not been hit for three boundaries by Todd Elliotte in his final over of the day.
Star captain Phil McGregor had ground his way to 22, but was unable to add to his overnight score when he was caught in the slips by Murray Prattley in Reid’s second over of the day.
Elliotte looked to press on, but with Reid still getting movement off the seam and good shape, he departed for 37 when the score was 79.
Reid soon had five wickets when Danny Campbell went for seven.
Matt Devlin dismissed Hamish Dickson, and Star were teetering at 113 for seven.
Jack Harper was joined by the gritty Mark East and the pair slowly went about building a defendable total.
Reid went off for a spell and the pair soon lifted the run rate.
Rotating the strike soon brought up a half century partnership, and Harper, having survived a confident appeal for a stumping on 36, soon breezed past 50.
The combination came to an end when East was dismissed for 13, and the score at 169 for eight.
Craig Hinton dug in with Harper who was finding the boundary with ease.
Hinton helped him through the nervous 90s to record a match-changing innings, which included 11 fours and two sixes.
By the time he was out, Star had gone from on the brink of a heavy loss to being in complete control, as they declared at 232 for nine.
Waimate were left to get 233 in 58 overs to win the match on the first innings rule, but it was Star who looked more likely to claim the Cup.
Seam bowlers Hinton and Jeremy Lane found some early seam movement and bounce.
Waimate opener Nathan Sheppard was struck on the left-forearm and had to retire injured, and Reid soon followed, caught at second slip by Arkinstall for one.
Nathan Sew Hoy and Glen Drake batted positively in trying conditions, until Drake fell the same way as Arkinstall, for nine, when the score was 35.
Hinton had his tail up, as did his team-mates, despite the consistent drizzle and bleak outlook over Aorangi Oval.
The rain closed in once more and on came the covers. By the time they were removed, Nathan Sew Hoy, who had raced to 31 before the stop of play, was caught behind by East off Hinton.
Another Christchurch earthquake evacuee, Crowley, looked solid, while captain Jason Sew Hoy struggled to contain his hard-hitting nature.
Another rain delay came and went, and eventually Jason Sew Hoy and Crowley were both out leg-before wicket to Lane.
Star were always against the clock and the weather though, and while they removed the injured Sheppard quickly, poor light soon meant the players were off the field for good, with Waimate 94 for six, after 34 overs.
Hinton finished with three for 35 off 18 overs, while Lane ended with three for 24 off eight overs.
Jason Sew Hoy said to win the competition after 41 years, even if they had to share it, was a great achievement for his team.
“This is awesome. All the guys played really well.”
“After it being so hard to get players at times this season, this is a great moment for Waimate.”
Sew Hoy said Reid was a man in control of his game: “He’s just so consistent, puts the ball in the same spot, and gets a bit of movement.”
McGregor said his side was pleased to win the trophy after seven years without it.
“Conditions were really hard out there [to bat] and it probably took us until after lunch before we put them under any sort of pressure, but once we did, we were away.”
Other finals in the weekend also saw some interesting feats with Jamie McLaren’s century for Celtic Second Grade on CSG 1 meaning he has now scored a club century on all 3 CSG wickets. Unfortunately for Jamie, Greg Paul’s 126 not out for Waimate surpassed his in getting Waimate home in a final played in good spirit with the umpires noting that both teams were there to play cricket despite the conditions.

Below are some random photos taken at the final at Aorangi Oval.
