South Canterbury Cricket Prizegiving Awards 2017-2018 Season

The Awards night was held at sponsor DB Brewery’s hospitality area with MC for the night Julian Blanchard.

Those attending were welcomed by the Chairman of the South Canterbury Cricket Association Board, David Fisher and among those attending were life members Chris Galwey and John Davies as well as Simon Hill the General Manager of Community Cricket for Canterbury and Eugene Sanders the Canterbury Cricket Umpires Match Official & Operations Coordinator.

During the evening Julian interviewed local umpire John Bromley who had returned that day from a NZ Umpire Exchange to South Africa where he umpired in two first class matches at The Wanderers and also at Pretoria. He was also based in South Africa while the Australian “ball tampering” incident was taking place. As such Julian utilised this when he had three senior clubs compete against each other to change the condition of a ball, which John was asked to judge. While the man with 41 first class games under his belt, Dinesh de Silva won for Temuka, it was re-iterated that SC Cricket do not condone this, rather it was for some entertainment in the evening!

The top award of “South Canterbury Cricket Personality of the Year” deservedly went to Bevan Guthrie who represented NZ this year in the over 60,s team, but does much more, and to keep an umpiring theme it seems Les Elliott took out “Administrator of the Year”.

At youth level Ben Davenport justifiably took out the supreme award, the Graeme Blanchard Memorial Trophy.

Below are some photos from the evening and below that the full list of award recipients.

He is always willing to help out at practices and pre match warm-ups and is polite and well mannered. He plays the game with a smile on his face and respects his fellow players and officials. He is a very deserving winner of this award.

SCCUA GRAEME LOWRIE SPIRIT OF CRICKET AWARD for the senior cricketer who epitomizes the way the game should be played: Decided by Umpires

Josh Smallridge for sportsmanship – In a senior one day match between Timaru and Celtic played at Anzac Square there was an appeal for lbw. The umpire believed the ball had clipped the pad on the way through and gave the Celtic batsman Dan Laming out leg before wicket. The Timaru players gathered together while Laming departed and then the Timaru captain, Josh Smallridge said to the umpires “I would like to withdraw our appeal as we believe that Dan hit the ball”.

The umpires called out to Laming, halfway to the boundary and explained that the appeal had been withdrawn and he may continue his innings.

SOUTH CANTERBURY SUPPORTERS CLUB TROPHY – To player/Umpire/Administrator who contributes most on or off the field:

Les Elliott – Les has been the umpire coordinator for a few seasons now since moving with his family to Timaru. As well as umpiring himself, Les makes all the appointments for Saturdays, Sunday rep matches, helps with inter-school appointments, as well as running fortnightly meetings for the umpires where they go over points of law, problems, issues arising and various other aspects involving umpiring and scoring.

Les is always approachable, enjoys a “generally good camaraderie” with the players, and importantly is always punctual and willing to help SC Cricket in any way he can. A lot of work goes into training, scheduling and appointments, and Les is a worthy winner of the Supporters Club Trophy this year.

ALLAN EDGINTON TROPHY for Sports Personality of the year:

Bevan Guthrie – This year Bevan represented New Zealand in the over 60 team and reached the final of their tournament in Australia after being selected following a great inter-provincial tournament where he finished 4th in the batting stats. At the tournament, batsmen had to retire at 35, a feature Bevan achieved twice against Central Districts and Auckland, while he also scored a 34 against champions Canterbury. All up Bevan scored 110 runs across four innings, giving him an average of 55.

Bevan still plays Second Grade A cricket and is still scoring fifties and taking wickets, but when there is no game he doesn’t rest but contributes as an umpire, he umpired at 12 local matches and an interprovincial women’s match between Otago and Canterbury this season, and stood every day at the week-long U17 tournament as well as both days at Finals this past weekend.

Bevan’s impact on the game locally is best said here, as I quote;

Bevan deserves this award due to having seen him over the last 10 years or so playing for a number of teams and helping them along and also if not playing, umpiring club and rep cricket matches which always gave you a feeling of confidence the right call would usually be made with Bevan there and therefore lifting the enjoyment for all players.”

GRAEME BLANCHARD MEMORIAL TROPHY:

For a youth cricketer who displays an excellent attitude on and off the field for fair play, a team player who inspires the spirit of cricket and has good work ethics.

Ben Davenport – Scored 953 runs in all forms of cricket this season, included 2 centuries. Ben always gives 100% in effort and attitude – a quiet lad who leads by example, is always well mannered and friendly. Ben works hard on his game and impressed at the Canterbury U17 Tri series tournament in January. He is focused on selection for the Canterbury U17 team next season. Ben has had a tremendous season and has made some big runs for club and province. His drive and dedication are very evident when he steps onto the field, but he also has a great attitude and is well respected by his peers. A very worthy recipient of this prestigious award.

Ground Changes for Weekend Cricket

Saturday Cricket Ground Changes – Important

Due to the rain and inability to work on Council grounds during the last week, our groundsmen are only able to prepare some pitches for suitability to play on Saturday.

As such this has necessitated changes to almost every game this weekend, so please read the revised draw below and inform your players, coaches and managers accordingly.

While we have made our best effort to have all games played, in some cases there may still be damper areas in the outfield. We suggest bringing the boundary in slightly if applicable, or at minimum making all players aware of these areas, but importantly we want to get on with cricket!

Back L to R: Jamie Trezise, Hayden Broker, Nathan Sew Hoy, Henry Timm, Hayden Shaw, Glen Drake (c), Dinesh de Silva, Dillon Lees, Warren Morgan. Front L to P: Shaun Rooney, Josh Rooney, Willie Stone, Phil Lill.

Temuka won their first senior trophy in 20 years, comprehensively beating Timaru in a one sided affair, after it seemed Timaru played their big game in the semi the week before.

Batting first, a run out off the first ball by opening bowler Dinesh de Silva, following through to pick up the ball, then turn to throw down the stumps at the bowler’s end set the tone for what was to follow. Captain Glen Drake then took 6 wickets for just 4 runs off 4 overs as Timaru were dismissed for 40.

Naffa Sew Hoy 24 no off 11 balls and Willie Stone 16 no saw Temuka to victory in just 4.4 overs to win.

Southland vs Sth Canty Hawke Cup Review

By Logan Savory
Harsh Visavadiya fell agonisingly short of joining a very rare Southland cricketing club on Saturday. However, it would be wrong to paint his deeds at Queens Park with a brush tainted with disappointment.
Visavadiya’s golden summer with the bat continued in Southland’s third Hawke Cup fixture of the season against South Canterbury.
Heading into the weekend Visavadiya had produced three half centuries in as many innings for Southland and on Saturday he yet again delivered.
He racked up 199 and had the scattering of onlookers at Queens Park hanging on his every shot.
That was before cruelly the right-hand batsman was caught behind with a bottom edge when Visavadiya attempted to cut a wide delivery to bring up a double century.
Had he scored that one run required he would have joined Robert ‘Jumbo’ Anderson, Rodney Tait, and Ryan Myer as batsmen to score 200 for Southland in a Hawke Cup fixture.
Anderson scored a remarkable three Hawke Cup double hundreds during his career, including Southland’s highest ever score of 255 against Ashburton County in Invercargill in 1977.
Tait scored his double hundred against North Otago in 1988 while Myer was the last to reach the milestone scoring 206 not out against South Canterbury in Timaru in 2013.
Milestones aside, Visavadiya’s innings will still go down in Southland cricketing folklore as he struck 22 fours and seven sixes.
He brought up his 50 from 50 balls, his century came from 130 balls, he passed 150 with 171 balls at the crease and then fell for 199 after a 211-ball stay.
His knock provided the backbone to Southland’s impressive first innings total of 367 for eight before they declared late on day one on Saturday.
Handy support acts came from Venkat Kotte (48) and skipper Shaun Fitzgibbon (58).
It left South Canterbury with a tricky 17 overs to negate before stumps and Jason Osborne was able to make inroads with the new ball.
He picked up two wickets to have South Canterbury 18-2 at stumps.
As just as cruel as Visavavida’s edge on 199 was the rain for Southland on Sunday.
Outright points looked likely but with South Canterbury at 63-3 rain started to fall forcing a break.
They returned to the field but again the rain fell this time stopping play at 105-5.
At 5.10pm, and with close to 30 overs still available in the day, the teams returned yet again and Southland pounced to ensure they did get first innings points out of the game.
Ben Lockrose and Jacob Duffy picked up a wicket each to reduce South Canterbury to 107-7 before that man Visavadiya delivered again – this time the ball.
Fitzgibbon threw Visavadiya the ball and with his first two balls the wrist spinner picked up two wickets and South Canterbury were all of a sudden nine down.
The last pair of Phil Lill and Craig Hinton sent some nerves into the Southland camp with stubborn 16 over partnership which almost denied the home team first innings points.
However teenage spinner Lockrose trapped Hinton in front LBW to pick up the final wicket needed and the first innings points.
South Canterbury were bowled out for 166.
Southland now has an almost winner-takes-all showdown with North Otago in Oamaru this weekend in what is the two teams final Southern Zone fixture.
North Otago picked up maximum points on Saturday beating Mid Canterbury by an innings inside day one of the game.
A first innings or outright win for Southland, without North Otago scoring any points in Oamaru, would book Southland a Hawke Cup challenge.
