The Awards night was held at sponsor DB Brewery’s hospitality area with MC for the night Julian Blanchard.

Those attending were welcomed by the Chairman of the South Canterbury Cricket Association Board, David Fisher and among those attending were life members Chris Galwey and John Davies as well as Simon Hill the General Manager of Community Cricket for Canterbury and Eugene Sanders the Canterbury Cricket Umpires Match Official & Operations Coordinator.

During the evening Julian interviewed local umpire John Bromley who had returned that day from a NZ Umpire Exchange to South Africa where he umpired in two first class matches at The Wanderers and also at Pretoria. He was also based in South Africa while the Australian “ball tampering” incident was taking place. As such Julian utilised this when he had three senior clubs compete against each other to change the condition of a ball, which John was asked to judge. While the man with 41 first class games under his belt, Dinesh de Silva won for Temuka, it was re-iterated that SC Cricket do not condone this, rather it was for some entertainment in the evening!

The top award of “South Canterbury Cricket Personality of the Year” deservedly went to Bevan Guthrie who represented NZ this year in the over 60,s team, but does much more, and to keep an umpiring theme it seems Les Elliott took out “Administrator of the Year”.

At youth level Ben Davenport justifiably took out the supreme award, the Graeme Blanchard Memorial Trophy.

Individual Awards

WARNER CUP for Outstanding schoolboy cricketer of the year (JAB):

Toby Clemett – Club – 437 runs @ 33.62, 15 wickets @ 13.93 and 6 catches. At SIPS tournament in Nelson, he scored 128 runs at 42.67 with a high score of 91. He also captained his club and provincial teams.

THRELKELD TROPHY: Outstanding Player at year 5 & 6 Tournament

Jed McKerrow – 50 runs at 16.67, 4 wickets at 7.25 and 2 catches.

Toby Scannell – scored 540 runs at 25 including two centuries

EDDIE McEWEN MEMORIAL TROPHY for the Best Player Under 15 Years.

Caleb Donaldson. Runs: 688, Average: 34.4, Wickets: 23 @ 9.5

MOA PUBLICATIONS CUP – Best Player at Under 17 Tournament

William Sharp 95 runs @ 31.66 and 6 wkts at 21.83 and captained side very well.

Selected for Canterbury tri-series.

LJ GRANT TROPHY Young Player of the year:

Ben Davenport – has scored 953 runs in all forms of cricket this season, including 2 x 100’s (136 off  82 balls and 116 off c 84 balls) and 6 x 50’s inc 59 n.o off 42 balls for Canty Development tri-series team.

Has played Roncalli 1st XI, U17 Canty Development Tri-Series U17, Sth Canty U17 (vice captain) and Sth Canty Senior Club Cricket this season.

ROCKDALE KIA ORA TROPHY for Best Cricketer Under 21:

Sean Wills – took 4-40 in debut game for SC against Chch Metro. During senior season scored 364 runs from 11 innings at average of 45.5, including a century and two fifties, one an excellent 89 in the final. He also took 19 senior wickets at 10.05 for a great season and deserving U21 trophy recipient.

REX BOWDEN CUP for Best Cricketer Under 23:

Glen Drake – scored 272 rep runs @ 30.22 including a fifty and his maiden Hawke Cup century (114 v Otago Country). Also as well as captaining his Temuka Club in an unprecedented club season, winning all round robin matches he scored 441 runs at 40.09 including 5 fifties and led the bowling taking 38 wickets from 103.1 overs at an average of 9.03 with an economy rate of 3.32. His best bowling was 6 wickets for 4 runs in the 20/20 final. 713 runs total for season.

WARD CUP for Best Player in all other grades other than Senior

Paul Coles – Second grade for Temuka scored 567 runs at 56.7 average including 2 hundreds and 2 fifties. He hit 56 fours and 35 sixes in the season. As well this year he kept wicket taking 13 catches and 5 stumpings.

WILLIAMS CUP for Bowler of the Year:

Sam Carlaw 55 (39 club and 16 rep) including two hatricks, a club one against Temuka and a Hawke Cup hatrick against Mid Canterbury.

SCCA Plaque – Senior Batsman of the Year:

Adam Beck 595 runs at 35 average for Pleasant Point Senior.

JIM DAVIES CUP for Best Single senior performance or representative season:

Dinesh de Silva in the 2^nd innings of the Hawke Cup match against Otago Country he took 8-31 ripping the heart out of their resistance leading to a comfortable outright victory by SC.

PHIL D’AUVERGNE TROPHY for player who contributed most on and off the field for the senior rep team: Chosen by Coach and players.

Ernie Aitchieson Fair Play award on and off the field for youth cricketer:

Lleyton Phillips – Lleyton has a great attitude both on and off the field, he trains hard and is always seeking advice on his performance from his coaches. He is always willing to help out at practices and pre match warm-ups and is polite and well mannered. He plays the game with a smile on his face and respects his fellow players and officials. He is a very deserving winner of this award.

SCCUA GRAEME LOWRIE SPIRIT OF CRICKET AWARD for the senior cricketer who epitomizes the way the game should be played: Decided by Umpires

Josh Smallridge for sportsmanship – In a senior one day match between Timaru and Celtic played at Anzac Square there was an appeal for lbw. The umpire believed the ball had clipped the pad on the way through and gave the Celtic batsman Dan Laming out leg before wicket. The Timaru players gathered together while Laming departed and then the Timaru captain, Josh Smallridge said to the umpires “I would like to withdraw our appeal as we believe that Dan hit the ball”.

The umpires called out to Laming, halfway to the boundary and explained that the appeal had been withdrawn and he may continue his innings.

SOUTH CANTERBURY SUPPORTERS CLUB TROPHY – To player/Umpire/Administrator who contributes most on or off the field:

Les Elliott – Les has been the umpire coordinator for a few seasons now since moving with his family to Timaru. As well as umpiring himself, Les makes all the appointments for Saturdays, Sunday rep matches, helps with inter-school appointments, as well as running fortnightly meetings for the umpires where they go over points of law, problems, issues arising and various other aspects involving umpiring and scoring.

Les is always approachable, enjoys a “generally good camaraderie” with the players, and importantly is always punctual and willing to help SC Cricket in any way he can. A lot of work goes into training, scheduling and appointments, and Les is a worthy winner of the Supporters Club Trophy this year.

ALLAN EDGINTON TROPHY for Sports Personality of the year:

Bevan Guthrie – This year Bevan represented New Zealand in the over 60 team and reached the final of their tournament in Australia after being selected following a great inter-provincial tournament where he finished 4th in the batting stats. At the tournament, batsmen had to retire at 35, a feature Bevan achieved twice against Central Districts and Auckland, while he also scored a 34 against champions Canterbury. All up Bevan scored 110 runs across four innings, giving him an average of 55.

Bevan still plays Second Grade A cricket and is still scoring fifties and taking wickets, but when there is no game he doesn’t rest but contributes as an umpire, he umpired at 12 local matches and an interprovincial women’s match between Otago and Canterbury this season, and stood every day at the week-long U17 tournament as well as both days at Finals this past weekend.

Bevan’s impact on the game locally is best said here, as I quote;

“Bevan deserves this award due to having seen him over the last 10 years or so playing for a number of teams and helping them along and also if not playing, umpiring club and rep cricket matches which always gave you a feeling of confidence the right call would usually be made with Bevan there and therefore lifting the enjoyment for all players.”

GRAEME BLANCHARD MEMORIAL TROPHY:

For a youth cricketer who displays an excellent attitude on and off the field for fair play, a team player who inspires the spirit of cricket and has good work ethics.

Ben Davenport – Scored 953 runs in all forms of cricket this season, included 2 centuries. Ben always gives 100% in effort and attitude – a quiet lad who leads by example, is always well mannered and friendly. Ben works hard on his game and impressed at the Canterbury U17 Tri series tournament in January. He is focused on selection for the Canterbury U17 team next season. Ben has had a tremendous season and has made some big runs for club and province. His drive and dedication are very evident when he steps onto the field, but he also has a great attitude and is well respected by his peers. A very worthy recipient of this prestigious award.
