SC gritty but just fall short

The South Canterbury under-17 cricket team suffered a tough two-wicket loss to Christchurch Metro Black in the opening 60-over game of its regional tournament at Aorangi Oval yesterday.
The home team got themselves back into the game on several occasions with gritty fightbacks with both bat and ball but ultimately came up just short.
South Canterbury made a strong recovery from early trouble after batting first.
They posted 230 all out after 59.5 overs.
The team rallied thanks to 48 from Jacob O’Connor and 47 from Jamie Trezise. The pair put on 70 for the seventh wicket after coming together at 135 for six.
They were able to play aggressively against the Christchurch Metro Black spinners and make the most of a fast outfield that gave value for shots.
Alistair Harvey was the best of the top-order batsman, making 23. Taylor Irie was the pick of the visiting bowlers taking three for 32.
South Canterbury did well to restrict Christchurch Metro Black’s early momentum with the bat.
While South Canterbury was unable to get an early wicket, they kept the openers to just 26 runs in the first 12 overs.
After 31 overs, they had moved through to 91 for 1 and were looking comfortable.
However, two wickets from Lawrence Darling’s medium pace and a direct-hit run out from Chris Hogan helped South Canterbury get four wickets for 10 runs and reduce Christchurch Metro Black to 108 for five.
While the visitors consolidated after the mini-collapse, they still needed a run a ball from the last 16 overs.
Joel Williams turned out to be the saviour. He hit 76 to guide the visitors to victory with five overs to spare.
Darling finished with four for 47 while Mark Otley and Josh Mehrtens also got a wicket.
South Canterbury will be back at Aorangi Oval today to face Christchurch Metro White.

The South Canterbury under-17 cricket team’s hopes of ending their regional campaign with a victory were dashed by a magnificent 147 from Jack Lewis in their gritty 29-run loss yesterday.
The Christchurch Metro Red batsman showed plenty of ability in being the main contributor to the visitors’ 289-7 off 60 overs at Ashbury Park.
Two South Canterbury bowlers impressed despite the large total.
Opening bowler Mark Otley took 3-34 from 12 overs, while leg spinner James Copland snared 2-43 from nine overs.
The run chase always looked like a tough ask.
Despite a couple of starts from the top order, South Canterbury were 79-3 after 20 overs. Lawrence Darling was the mainstay of the innings. He finished on 95no as South Canterbury finished on 260.
Darling and Jamie Trezise shared in South Canterbury’s best partnership of 54, for the sixth wicket.
Darling was one of five South Canterbury players named to play trial games that would help select the Canterbury A under-17 team.
The others were Alistair Harvey, Chris Hogan, Nick O’Brien and Josh Mehrtens.
