Dan Laming 153

A scintillating 153 from Dan Laming helped Celtic cruise to its seventh straight senior one-day cricket title over Timaru at Aorangi Oval yesterday.

Laming’s knock was so good, he outscored Timaru on his own, as his team won by 153 runs.

Video below is a sequence of shots culminating with Dan bringing up his 150.

Celtic’s 288 for five was never challenged as Timaru capped a poor effort in the field with an equally poor performance with the bat and were bowled out for 135 inside 29 overs.

Timaru were made to pay for dropping the former South Canterbury skipper on three, as he unleashed a punishing onslaught on a Timaru attack which bowled too short and too wide on a pitch that rewarded full-pitched bowling.

Celtic seamer Ben Watson got it right in the run chase taking five for 46 after Laming had taken three for 35 to go with his century.

After combining for half century partnerships with Sam Carlaw (22) and brother Jimmy (57), Dan Laming found the perfect anchor in Jacob Naylor.

The pair combined for a 136-run fifth wicket stand which took the game away from Timaru after its two spinners Zane Sanders and Nick Galwey had put the brakes on through the middle stages.

Having brought up his ton with seven overs remaining Laming opened his shoulders to score 53 runs in the remaining time.

He hit 17 fours and three sixes, with Timaru opening bowler Hayden Leonard being punished for bowling too short. The veteran conceded 66 runs in his five overs.

Fellow seamer Michael King bowled three maidens to start his spell and ended with none for 32 from nine overs, while Galwey’s leg spinners yielded two for 37 from nine overs.

Timaru’s run chase never got going.

Dan Laming bowled nine overs straight and ripped out the top-order, while Watson tore through the rest. A 40-run third wicket partnership between Josh Smallridge (23) and Prabodha Arthavidu (26) showed some fight but once they departed, Timaru waved the white flag. The seamers were so destructive, South Canterbury spinner Carlaw bowled just one ball but managed to get the last wicket of the day.
