Glen Drake stars as Temuka knock over defending champions Celtic

Temuka’s Glen Drake scored 61 not out and took four wickets in their win over Celtic.

South Canterbury Hawke Cup player Glen Drake led the way in the opening round of the South Canterbury Club Cricket competition.

Drake’s patient 61 not out helped Temuka through to a very competitive first up score of 180, before they knocked over defending champions Celtic with Drake claiming four wickets in an 18-run victory at the Celtic Sports Ground.

The batting tallies showed the decision to move to white balls for the 45-over competition could be a positive one, with reasonable opening round scores.

Temuka, who finished last in the one-day competition last year, won the toss and decided to bat first in overcast conditions likely to favour swing bowling.

After losing Shaun Rooney for seven, Willie Stone and Phil Lill put on a 66-run stand before the latter fell for 46 to Adam Hamel, following a good catch from Sam Carlaw.

That saw Drake stride to the crease and he punished anything that was too short and wide.

He anchored the innings beautifully as other batsmen made starts but were unable to kick on.

The left-handed Drake struck eight fours in his 60 ball stay.

Willie Stone contributed 21 and new recruit Dinesh De Silva 14, in a reasonable bowling effort from an under-strength Celtic lineup.

Hamel was the best of the bowlers, nabbing 3-28, while Carlaw chipped in with 2-32 and Ben Watson captured 2-44.

In reply, Celtic were struggling after Rooney and De Silva combined to remove Nigel Caple, Andy Scott, Dan Laming and Jacob Naylor in quick succession.

At 40-5, Celtic looked done, but Carlaw hit a brisk 28, which featured six fours, before he was stumped off Drake.

It looked as though Celtic’s hopes had vanished, but Watson (61) had other ideas as he and Wills Blackstock (20), in his first senior game, combined for an 82-run partnership to put Celtic right back in the clash.

However, Drake stepped up to remove them both and seal the result for Temuka.

De Silva and Rooney also picked up two wickets, while Lill, who was filling in at wicketkeeper, was solid behind the stumps.

The other clash between Star and Pleasant Point was abandoned due to rain which mostly missed the other clash, while Timaru had the bye.

Next Saturday sees Point face Timaru and Star host Temuka while Celtic have the weekend off.
