OVERSHADOWED: Jason Sew Hoy’s contribution of 74 was vital but it was Waimate captain Glen Drake’s eight for 28 which was the match-winning performance as his team defeated Timaru by 153 runs at Ashbury Park 4, on Saturday.
Waimate’s Glen Drake bounced back from a first-ball duck to return bowling figures of eight for 28 in his side’s 153-run thrashing of Timaru at Ashbury Park 4.
The win also meant Waimate were the inaugural winners of the 100-over competition, which was ironic considering they were the most opposed to playing the long formats of the game at the start of the season.
Drake was deceived by the low, slow nature of the pitch when he batted but turned it into an advantage with his left-arm off-spin.
He trapped three of his eight victims leg before wicket, as Timaru were bundled out for 54 in pursuit of 207.
The visitors owed a lot to former captain Jason Sew Hoy, who rediscovered some form with the bat to make 74.
It was an out-of-character innings for the usually hard-hitting veteran, who had to be patient on a tough pitch.
He hit just five boundaries and two sixes and took 97 balls to score his runs, which was sedate by his standards.
Sew Hoy opened the innings and had to watch as his first three partners were all removed with just 18 runs on the board.
He found support from Hayden Matthews (17), but it was not until Simon Murphy hit 42 from 45 balls that the Waimate innings gained momentum.
Timaru seamers Hayden Leonard and Abhishek Baadkar took three wickets each. The Timaru batsmen were guilty of not getting forward to Drake.
The captain was helped out by two excellent slip catches from Justin Thompson and an on-the-run outfield catch from Lachie Robertson, who removed Baadkar for 22 despite having stitches in hand from last week when he split his webbing.
A fortnight of batting woes continued for Timaru. Last week’s 98 all out looked super compared to their feeble effort, on Saturday where they lasted just 18.2 overs.
Temuka continued their strong season with a gutsy 74-run win over Star at Mountainview High School.
Temuka were 66 for six batting first at one stage, but their innings was held together by Johnny Geddis who made an unbeaten 86.
Former Rocalli bowler Alex McDuff took four wickets for Star.
Paul Arkinstall made 42 for the home team in the only innings of note.
Kevin Teahen then followed up his five for 25 last week against Timaru, with six for 32 this week, as the home team was dismissed for 104.
