Nick Horsley’s 96 set up the win for Temuka
A rapid-fire 96 from Nick Horsley was enough for Temuka to beat a determined Cavaliers team by six wickets in their South Canterbury twenty20 cricket encounter last night.
Horsley hit 15 fours and two sixes as he treated the Cavaliers bowling attack with utter contempt at times.
Only a lack of energy led to his downfall.
He had controlled Temuka’s chase for 164 well, but when he departed in the 16th over after being caught at long-on trying to bring up his century, the Magpies still needed eight runs an over.
However, the in-form Willy Stone guided them to the total with four balls to spare, thanks to an unbeaten 17.
Earlier, the Cavaliers, who are made up of former club cricket players and a few high school cricketers, posted 164, thanks largely to the fast start from Timaru Boys’ High School (TBHS) captain, Michael Hogan.
He opened the innings and made 54, his half century coming off 25 balls as the composite side rolled along at nine runs an over in the early stages.
When Hogan’s knock was cut short, the Temuka slower bowlers also slowed the run rate.
The dibbly-dobbly seamers of Vaughan Tarrant proved most effective as he finished with one for 18 from four overs.
Paul Brohan (35) and Jason McCone (30) added 68 runs for the fifth wicket as the Cavaliers made a solid 164 for five.
Temuka’s chase was anchored around Horsley, Johnny Geddis made 8 but batted time, while Phil Lill contributed 25.
TBHS allrounder Dan O’Brien was the pick of the bowlers for the Cavaliers, taking two for 32.
The tall seamer got a bit of extra bounce, which gave him the opportunity to take wickets.
