South Canterbury JAB Rep sides had great success against their Dunedin counterparts in Dunedin last Sunday winning two of the three matches and only losing the other match on the last ball.

Primary A
A young and excited South Canterbury A Cricket team travelled to Dunedin to play Dunedin Metro Gold on Sunday.
Captain Toby Clemett won the toss and elected to bat on a slow pitch. South Canterbury’s top order dug in and formed good partnerships through their innings with contributions of 25 from opener Oliver Linton, 27 from Clemett and 19 from Logan Sowden. The middle order chipped in with valuable runs and increased the tempo. Fletcher Rhodes, 41 not out, and Nick Webb, 10 not out off 6 balls, ensured SC ended their 45 overs with a very competitive 177 for 6.
South Canterbury got off to a good start with the ball, Webb getting an early wicket, a spectacular caught and bowled, in the third over. Dunedin built from here and while slightly behind the run rate required had wickets in hand.
The spin bowling of Jock Rollinson, 2 wickets, Naveen Sridhar, 1 wicket and the medium pace of Lucas Histon, 5 runs off 4 overs, through the middle overs really put the screws on and runs were hard to come by. Luke Slee picked up two valuable wickets and had the outstanding figures of 2 for 16 off 8 overs.
It came down to the final over with Dunedin needing 16 to win the game. Former South Canterbury cricketer Dave Hunter’s son Billy produced some excellent power hitting, including two 6’s, to leave the scores tied with one ball left. The fielders all came in close trying to stop the single required. The batsman blocked and ran, unfortunately South Canterbury missed with their shy at the stumps and Dunedin claimed a 5 wicket victory.
South Canterbury showed great promise and looked the likely victors for most of the game. They will take great confidence from the performance and look forward to playing Christchurch Metro in their last game of this summer in two weeks time.
Primary Development (Yr 7)
The South Canterbury Year 7 Development team travelled to Dunedin on Sunday to play a Dunedin Metro Year 7 team. After winning the toss South Canterbury decided to bat first, on what was a very slow wicket and after an early wicket, Flynn Smith (50 retired) and Lachie Munro (21) took the score through to 114 off 30 overs, which set the side up with a good platform to push onto a competitive score in the final 10 overs. Runs were hard to come by but South Canterbury managed to put up a competitive 172 for 5 off 40 overs.
The Dunedin Metro innings started with 3 wickets falling quickly, Jackson Smith 7–2-11-1 and Kade McMillian 8-0-29-3 bowled well up front which put Dunedin Metro under pressure on a slow wicket and with some excellent bowling by Jackson Weir 7-0-28-2 and Henry Scott 6-0-23-1, South Canterbury were able to close out the match by restricting Dunedin to 143 for 8 off their allotted 40 overs.
South Canterbury fielded well and displayed excellent team morale, in a pleasing start to the new campaign.
Primary Yr 5 & 6
The South Canterbury year 5/6 team travelled to Dunedin for their annual fixture on Sunday.
Otago gold won the toss and elected to bat first South Canterbury made early inroads with Jed Mckerrow, Ben Blakemore, Hamish Caird and Connor Howes all bowling superbly in the early overs, beating the bat on numerous occasions and troubling all the Otago batsman.
Jed Mckerrow took the first 2 wickets and Ben Blakemore grabbed the third as Otago were left struggling at 11 for 3.
Otago then put on a good partnership but some steady bowling by the medium pace of Daniel Poulter and Jacob Suddaby and the 3 spinners Mac Kelliher, Jacob Gilkison and Harry Elliotte meant they never gained any momentum.
Captain Flynn Brookland rang the changes well and some outstanding fielding late in the innings which included 3 runouts kept Otago to 148-8 off 35 overs.
With 10 new players in this years game at the half way mark it was a great effort .
Bailey Campbell (17 runs) and Harry Elliotte (9 runs) opened South Canterburys innings and partnerships were going to be key to a positive result Mac Kelliher (11 runs) carried on the good work at #3 and set a great platform, rotating the strike with ease.
Jed Mckerrow batting at #4 began to take the Otago bowlers apart, hitting the ball hard and to all parts of Kensington oval.
Jed scored a well deserved 50 runs and retired soon after, but not before putting together a match winning partnership with captain Flynn Brookland (15 not out).
Running between the wickets was a key to their partnership and once the older Mckerrow was retired he was replaced by younger brother Billy (2 not out) who together with Brookland achieved the final 5 runs required off the final over winning with 1 ball to spare.
A fantastic overall team effort by this young team and hopefully they can continue their progress against a Christchurch Metro side on 19th March in Geraldine.
