Jeremy Liddy 180
An onslaught from Celtic batsman Jeremy Liddy on the Roncalli College bowlers saw him bludgeon his way to 180 on the first day of the second round of South Canterbury two-day senior cricket.
It was a day for the home teams on Saturday, with Star’s Craig Hinton taking six for 49 as his team managed first innings points against Waimate at Mountain View High School.
The left-arm spin of Zane Sanders ensured Timaru had the upper hand in the debut of their new pitch block against Temuka at Ashbury Park 4. Temuka chose to bat on a pitch no one knew anything about in the hope it would break up as the match wore on.
Jordan Morrow removed Temuka opener Adrian Cunningham in the first over without a run on the board. When opening partner Willie Stone was caught at first slip by Gerald Piddock from the bowling of Kris Howes, Temuka were in trouble at 6-2.
Temuka stalwart Kevin Teahen was joined by Rory Lorimer and the pair built a partnership. Lorimer was powerful off the front foot, driving at will, while Teahen collected runs when they were on offer. They took the score through to 70 before Lorimer played a rash shot across the line of a delivery from Sanders, which saw him bowled for 40.
Teahen held firm as wickets continued to tumble, but when he too fell victim to a straight ball from Dhananjaya Murari for 38, Temuka were in danger or being rolled for little more than 100 on a pitch which was consistent and becoming easier to bat on.
Vaughan Tarrant and Simon Davenport put on an eight wicket stand of 52 to take the score through to 154, but the pair rode their luck, with Timaru wicketkeeper Greg Hull convinced he had Davenport caught behind twice during his innings. When both men fell for 24, Temuka had to scramble for the last 10 overs before the compulsory declaration at the 60 over mark. Temuka were bowled out in the 60th over for 163.
Sanders finished with 5-42 to go with his seven wickets last week against Roncalli. Kris Howes offered support and got good bounce to take 3-37.
Timaru’s batsmen backed up the hard work of their bowlers early, with openers Josh Smallridge and Murari putting on 59 for the opening wicket.
It was a 50 from new Indian-import Abhishek Baadkar, which guaranteed Timaru had a lead by stumps. Baadker was positive at every opportunity as Timaru scored at more than five runs an over. Timaru ended on 195 for 5 at stumps, a lead of 32 with 20 overs of batting still in front of them.
Temuka captain Neil Loow took three late wickets, to give his team a slight chance on day two.
Star’s Hinton took six wickets with his left-arm medium-fast deliveries to roll Waimate for 128.
Glen Drake held the innings together for the visitors, with 68, a good innings considering he was an early victim of Hinton’s after being hit in the jaw when he was only on 21 and had to leave the field for some time, returning after the loss of a few more wickets. Unfortunately he received no other support with Alan Reid (11) the only other batsman to make double figures.
An unbeaten 60 from opener Mark East got Star a 42 run first innings lead. He received support from Matt Heywood (31), Aaron Collins (21) and Grant Managh (19) as they declared at 170-8. Waimate are 24 without loss in reply.
Neither Celtic nor Roncalli supplied scorecards but it is understood Roncalli were forced to follow on after Liddy struck 180 for Celtic in the first innings.
