Day One Report
Today South Canterbury Primary A were playing North Otago at Queens Park No 1, Invercargill in their opening match of the South Island Primary Schools Cricket Tournament.
North Otago batted first and after being in trouble at 9-2 went on to make 176-5 declared from 59 overs. Unfortunately for South Canterbury, while the ground fielding was excellent according to coach Ants de Joux, they dropped North Otago’s S Kitto three times including while on a duck and he went on to anchor their innings with 97. Stand out bowlers for South Canterbury were Gabriel Evans with 1-17 off 10 overs, Charlie Martin 1-18 off 10 and Tedd Grigg 0-10 off 7.
In reply South Canterbury lost wickets just as they were establishing new partnerships and this often meant starting again. Gabriel Evans (14) and top-scorer William Sharp (47) added 45 for the third wicket, and James Arscott (22no) and William Johnson added 30 runs for the ninth wicket as they helped South Canterbury to get very close to their target, but facing less overs (50) ended up with a draw finishing the day 161-9.
Day Two Report
South Canterbury played Marlborough. The game start was delayed after the match was shifted belatedly from Invercargill to Wyndham.
Marlborough batted first and was 21-1 when rain stopped play with Charlie Martin the successful bowler for South Canterbury with 1-8 off four overs. The match was eventually abandoned in the late afternoon, as were all other matches at the tournament.

Day Four Report
Otago Country eased to victory in a rain-sodden match against South Canterbury in the South Island Primary Schools Cricket Tournament.
Yesterday’s match in Gore had already been delayed by 24 hours due to persistent rain, and conditions were not much better once play got underway.
While the teams could have batted out for a draw, it was good to see South Canterbury give themselves a chance by making a declaration, and it was much more enjoyable for them to play, especially in the wintry conditions.
South Canterbury batted first, but were in trouble throughout the first innings with only William Sharp (23) and Gabriel Evans (11) making double figures as South Canterbury were dismissed for 67 despite batting for 40 overs.
Otago Country started well with a 50-run opening partnership in good time setting their side up to declare at 74-2 after 26 overs with Ted Grigg and James Arscott taking a wicket apiece.
In their second innings, South Canterbury went on attack as they tried to set up a run chase and perhaps turn the game back in their favour.
James Arscott opened the batting and led the way with 24 while Ben Davenport enjoyed batting lower in the order to finish 19 not out when the declaration came after 21 overs with South Canterbury 88-6.
Otago Country were set 82 runs to win off 20 overs, but lost only one wicket and sealed the victory with four overs remaining.
South Canterbury play their final match for the week against Christchurch Metro Red in Wyndham today.
Day Five Report
They Froze!!!
Coach Ants de Joux told me it was the coldest day he has ever spent at cricket in his life and was really proud of the boys who battled horizontal rain and a southerlie off the Antarctic that kept temperatures to a maximum of 8C for the day.
The highlight was 55 by Gabriel Evans before he was run out, but up against a tough side in Christchurch Metro who decalared at 157-1 after 36 overs South Canterbury battled extremely well to gain a draw. They batted for 67 overs to finish on 118-7 with the last 5 batsmen all lasting at least 5 overs as they held the Metro attack off. You can see the full card here http://www.crichq.com/matches/89821
