A swashbuckling 56 from Nathan Tubb guided the Cavaliers to a 16-run win over Timaru Boys’ High School in the first round of senior twenty20 cricket last night.
The make-shift side, made up of players from the past, made 159 for seven on the back of Tubb’s 37-ball knock.
In reply, TBHS could only muster 143 for nine.
The Cavaliers batsmen grew in confidence from the start.
Openers Phil Duffield (27) and Nick No 1 (30) added 60 to set the platform which allowed Tubb to launch seven fours and a six at the Rectory Ground.
Jason McCone also hit three sixes in his 21 to help push the rate from a run-a-ball to eight an over by the close.
Leg spinner James Copland was the pick of the bowlers, taking two for 15 from four overs.
Opening bowler Mark Otley also took three wickets but it cost him 57.
The TBHS openers Chris Hogan an Wyatt McAughtrie put on 68 for the first wicket to keep up with the run rate but when they departed the run rate stalled.
The schoolboys lost four wickets with the score on 108.
Shaun Campbell and Sam Wilson were the main destroyers taking five of the first six wickets.
Latham Gibb top scored with 43.
In other results, Timaru beat Waimate by five wickets chasing Waimate’s 91 at Knottingley Park, Celtic beat Star by defending 222 at Celtic Sports Grounds and Temuka beat Roncalli/Celtic by defending 118 at Aorangi Oval.
