In other senior cricket matches a century to Dan Laming dispelled Star’s hopes after they had Celtic in a bit of trouble at 86-5 and Temuka couldn’t buy a trick after dismissing Timaru for just 115, they succumbed for a mere 52.
Waimate, trying out the duel captain theory with Connor Farrell and Matt Sew Hoy at the helm, won the toss and asked Celtic/Roncalli to bat first.
Mike and Ben de Joux added 42 for the first wicket and then Liam Beck kept the momentum going on his way to the team top score of 39 before losing his wicket with the total at 87, but after these three had batted only extras could make double figures.
The inspirational introduction of third change bowler Porter paid dividends as he scuttled the Roncalli/Celtic middle order removing batsmen No 4, 5, 6 and 7 including the hat-trick on his way to an impressive 4-17 bowling analysis.
Roncalli/Celtic never recovered after being 102-7 eventually all out for 116 in the 33rd over.
Waimate immediately put themselves on the back foot losing opener George Morgan run out by Grant Watt first ball of the innings.
However, after that it became the Porter show as poor catching by Roncalli/Celtic) kept Waimate in the game, and pushed themselves out of the game. Porter completely dominated proceedings and eventually found some support in Steve Oehley with 17 not out as he took Waimate to within a run of victory before losing his own wicket for 77, but had done all that was needed to see Waimate home as they completed their first win of the one day season in the 26th over.
Star began the day as underdogs against Celtic, but after blowing their opportunity of an upset in T20 the weekend before was looking to show it wasn’t an anomaly after Celtic won the toss and batted.
Alex McDuff showed his 6 wicket bag in the first round against Celtic wasn’t a fluke too as he was again the main destroyer taking four of the first six wickets to fall as the Celtic batsmen could only just manage double figures and at 86-5 looked under a bit of pressure.
“Mr Cricket” Dan Laming had other ideas and after finding a good ally in Tom Pavletich set about the repair job. The pair added 100 runs before Pavletich was out for 31, and the score over 200 when Laming was out for 104, but the control of the match was firmly back in Celtic hands, and the tail took the score through to 255-8 by the end of their 50 overs, with Brad Gilbert chiming in with 33.
Star’s run chase started steadily despite the early loss of Phil McGregor with Jacques Marais again top-scoring with 38, but at 94-4 when Marais departed the long Star tail was displayed and eventually they were all out for 136.
Bowling for Celtic James Laming showed his all round qualities making up for a shorter than planned stay at the crease when batting to take four top order wickets on his way to 4-20, and Sam Carlaw and Pavletich took two apiece at very economical rates.
The Temuka home game against Timaru had to be played at Ashbury Park while they await the finish of renovations at Temuka Oval, but unfortunately Timaru didn’t allow them any “home team advantage” winning the toss and batting first.
Wickets fell regularly and runs were hard to come by with Vaughan Tarrant (3-24) Kevin Teahen (2-13) and Kevin Kerse (2-27) all returning economical figures. Zane Sanders top scored for Timaru with 22, but a total of 115 looked like being a battle to defend.
Despite the difficult run scoring conditions Temuka’s batting was at best ‘poor’, exemplified by the fact extras was top score and only Johnny Geddis could make double figures.
The consolation for Temuka is that they still remain in 2nd place with four rounds left, while Timaru edge closer moving into 3rd on their own.
