Primary A
On a perfect cricket day, whether wise, the SC Primary A Cricket Team faced upto a strong Christchurch Metro Year 8 team at a slow but picturesque Waihi pitch. With the outfield wet from overnight showers Christchurch won the crucial toss and promptly asked SC to bat.
After a solid start with the openers Flynn Smith and Elie Kerse got through to 19 before losing Flynn in the 6th over. This brought captain Toby Clemett to the crease, who top scored with a well compiled 47. Only two other batsman made double figures, Lucas Histon 28 and Fletcher Rhodes 14, in a stuttering innings which was hampered by the slow outfield. SC’s total of 162 was boosted by 41 extras with all of Canterbury’s players having a bowl.
With a score on the board that the team felt was defendable they headed out into the field with some confidence. This was helped when Luke Slee picked up one of the openers, assisted by a good catch from Naveen Sridhar. Unfortunately wickets dried up after this and the two Canterbury batsman batted freely with both scoring at a good clip. The SC bowlers weren’t able to build pressure on the batsman and with the outfield now dry the batsman were getting good value for their shots. A fine partnership of 100 runs was only broken with the retirement of the opening batter after reaching his half century. At drinks Canterbury needed a further 30 runs and it looked a formality but SC staged a fightback with the introduction of Clemett to the bowling crease. He completed a good match personally with figures of 3 for 12 from 6 overs. Metro eventually reached the target 5 wickets down in the 37th of their 45 overs.
It has been an encouraging start to the new representative season with a very inexperienced, but keen, team at this level. The coaches and management wish the boys well for their winter sporting endeavours and look forward to working with them again next summer in the lead up to the South Island Primary A tournament in Nelson.
Primary Development (Yr 7)
South Canterbury Primary Development vs. Christchurch Metro Year 7, played at Waihi School.
SC won the toss and decided to bat.
Most of the top order got good starts after losing a wicket to the first ball of the match. Liam Simpson scored quickly adding a well compiled 28 to the total. Lachie Munro batted till drinks retiring on 25, playing a good supporting role. Jordy Sew Hoy made a very good 50 with some excellent shots all around the wicket. Tom Allan contributed with 10, and a quick-fire 10 from Kade MacMillan got the score moving. Scott Robertson did well striking the ball nicely and running well between the wickets ending up 30 not out. Will Goldsbury supported Scott well, running well and turning the strike over during his 11 not out. SC were 206-5 at the end of their 40 overs.
The Christchurch Metro batsmen were looking in top form early on in the chase. South Canterbury’s consistent bowling paid dividends, with Jackson Smith and Kade MacMillan bowling well to start the innings. Jacksons pace claimed 4 -11. Kade took a wicket. Reece Burtenshaw kept well for the first 20 overs. Mitchell Suddaby’s fielding was outstanding. Some good catches were taken in the field. Will Goldsbury took a tricky high ball when he kept. Reece’s bowling saw him on a hat trick finishing with 3-27. Jackson Weir bowled a good line and length finishing with 2-12 off 4 overs.
Great team effort saw SC take the win by 76 runs, with ChCh Metro all out for 130.
Primary Yr 5 & 6
Another great win for the South Canterbury year 5/6 team.
Today they took on Canterbury Metro at the Geraldine oval South Canterbury were asked to bat first on a slow damp wicket , Metro s bowling was steady but hard to hit through the field and resulted in Sc struggling early on losing 6 wickets for 38 runs at the half way stage A second consecutive 50 ( retired) to Jed Mckerrow and 20 for Hamish Caird produced a 50 run partnership at exactly the right time .
South Canterbury batted all their 40 overs to finish with 129/8 Now South Canterburys turn to bowl and this would mean they needed to dismiss their opponents not just restrict them for victory and as it happened it came down to the last over Metro needed 8 off the last over , but Ben Blakemore delivered a perfect over only conceding 1 run and taking a vital wicket He finished with figures of 2 for 8 off 6 overs Connor Howes was also outstanding at the bowling crease recording figures of
3 for 13 off 6 overs , his accuracy and length were key on this type of wicket
2 more run- outs this week were also a key to a well executed victory over the Canterbury boys Great finish to the season for this promising team , the huge smiles and high 5s were certainly the icing on the cake Bring on next season
