Destroyer: Hayden Leonard took a six-wicket bag to help his side to an impressive victory over Temuka.
A superb spell of fast bowling from Timaru’s Hayden Leonard brought Temuka to their knees on their own pitch in South Canterbury senior two-day cricket on Saturday.
The veteran took 6-40 in just 11.4 overs to help skittle the Magpies for 100 and set up an innings and 24 run victory for his team.
In other results, a five-wicket-bag from Craig Hinton helped Star secure a five-wicket victory over a stubborn Roncalli/Celtic at Mountainview High School.
Six wickets from Celtic spinner Sam Carlaw guided his side to a six-wicket victory over Waimate in a low scoring encounter at Knottingley Park.
Temuka trailed Timaru by 99 runs with all 10 second innings wickets in hand at the start of play but were quickly in trouble when Brad Leonard removed opener Adrian Cunningham in the first over of the day.
Just one run later, he also removed the dangerous Richie Preston for a duck. Brad Leonard then claimed top-scorer Johnny Geddis for 24 to finish with 3-7 from seven overs.
However, it was his uncle Hayden’s nagging line and length which paid dividends.
Temuka were unable to build any partnerships and the Magpies were dismissed for 100 inside 35 overs.
Roncalli/Celtic still trailed Star by 111 runs with seven second innings wickets in hand when they started day two. The Mountainview pitch was flatter than it had been the previous week giving the batsmen more confidence to play their shots.
Hinton bowled 24 consecutive overs in a punishing heat.
The left-arm seamer was a touch short at times but his work rate could not be disputed as he ended with 5-76 from 31 overs.
Roncalli/Celtic twin brothers Adam and Liam Beck proved they were batsmen to be wary of, with Liam notching 63 and Adam making his maiden senior half century with 54.
Despite the last two wickets adding 68 runs, the top order had not erased enough of the deficit to build a competitive total to defend.
Roncalli were all out for 201 which left Star needing 61 for victory.
While there were some typical Star wobbles trying to chase the small total, 16 runs off one Will Watts over from Terry McErlain snuffed out any chance of a boilover as the home team won by five wickets.
Grant Watt was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-24 from 10 overs.
Waimate were in reasonable shape starting at 55-2, a lead of 52, but it was the spin of Carlaw which undid most of its batting lineup.
The South Canterbury representative took 6-20 in 13 overs as Waimate lost its last eight wickets for 55 runs.
The Waimate bowlers removed both Celtic openers Andy Scott and Jimmy Laming for ducks but an early dropped catch when Jacob Naylor was looking to establish himself at the crease curtailed the home team’s chances of defending 107.
Naylor went on to make an unbeaten 53 to guide his team home.
