The South Canterbury Cricket Prizegiving was held at sponsor DB Brewery and for those who turned up a good night was held with MC Julian Blanchard leading proceedings in his usual inimitable style.

South Canterbury Cricket Awards 2016-2017 Season

Individual Awards

WARNER CUP for Outstanding schoolboy cricketer of the year (JAB):

Flynn Linton – During season batted 12 innings scoring 685 runs at an average of 114 (6 x not out) as taking 7 wickets at an average of 22.14 A great season and worthy recipient.

THRELKELD TROPHY: Outstanding Player at year 5 & 6 Tournament

Jordan Sew Hoy – At tournament he scored 100 runs from 3 innings including 50no out in the crucial final match against CJCA MacMillan to help them win the tournament and finished 2^nd overall at tournament from one less innings. He also finished 4^th overall at tournament in bowling taking 7-39 with a best of 3-14 at an average of 5.57 and added a catch and a run out during the week too.

L NIXON CUP Outstanding South Canterbury player at the South Island schoolboy’s tournament:

Caleb Donaldson – Captained the Primary A team and scored 99 runs with a top score of 53 and also took 6 wickets at an average of 8.6 and in the field picked up 3 catches and 2 run outs to lead his team on the field.

GALWEY TROPHY: Outstanding Player Year 5 & 6 Season

SCCA Cup Best Player at Primary Yr 7 Tournament:

Hamish McLeod – The boys were well lead by Captain Hamish McLeod who was the standout batsmen with 1 fifty and a near miss 48 on his way to 111 runs at an average of 37. He also helped in the field with 3 catches and a run out.

EDDIE McEWEN MEMORIAL TROPHY for the Best Player Under 15 Years.

Ben Davenport – Has had a successful year with Roncalli 1^st XI scoring 77 in a Second Grade A match before Xmas along with many more club and inter-school runs during the season, especially since Xmas. He also represented SC U15 side at tournament finishing 6^th best overall tournament batsman with 98 runs at 19.6 with a top score of 36 as well as chiming in with 4 wickets and 3 catches.

MOA PUBLICATIONS CUP – Best Player at Under 17 Tournament

Shaun Rooney captained the SC U17 side and was selected for the U17 Canterbury Tri Series, also scored 207 runs @ 73 in the three traditional inter-schools including 152 against Waitaki BHS while

also taking 6/25 (2 x honours board performances in the same match) – also scored a further three centuries in Chch Metro competition this year finishing with 130 last Saturday.

LJ GRANT TROPHY Young Player of the year:

Shaun Rooney captained the SC U17 side and was selected for the U17 Canterbury Tri Series, also scored 207 runs @ 73 in the three traditional inter-schools including 152 against Waitaki BHS while

also taking 6/25 (2 x honours board performances in the same match) – also scored a further three centuries in Chch Metro competition this year finishing with 130 last Saturday.

ROCKDALE KIA ORA TROPHY for Best Cricketer Under 21:

Mark Otley – This season Mark has played 2 Hawke Cup matches but real credit lies with making the Canterbury U19 side and the NZ U18 side and playing in the National A’s tournament and picking up wickets including 3-49 against Northern Districts.

REX BOWDEN CUP for Best Cricketer Under 23:

Liam Beck – has had a standout season at representative and club level. For the reps he scored 262 runs at 37.4 ave which included three fifties with a top score of 68. In Senior cricket he scored 362 runs at 30 ave including a century and three more fifties.

WARD CUP for Best Player in all other grades other than Senior

Andrew Holden – only had five bats for his side, and scored 231 at an average 77. He also took 14 wickets at 12.8. Miserly 3.2 runs per over. Best 4 for 10 off 8!

DAVIES TROPHY Women’s Batter of the Year

Jess Hewitson – helped the Pleasant Point Women’s team be competitive in Boys 4^th grade with a couple of fifties and scores to help her team.

COLONIAL INSURANCE Women’s Bowler of the Year

Jess Bailey – after returning to cricket she has regularly taken wickets against the boys with 15 wickets since Xmas and a best of 3-10.

WILLIAMS CUP for Bowler of the Year:

Sam Carlaw – lead the senior bowling table with 30 wickets at 10.03 with a best of 2-21 and on top of that picked up 7 rep wickets at 22 ave as well as 8 wickets in the two club championship matches against Sefton and Chch Old Boys.

SCCA Plaque – Senior Batsman of the Year:

Supeshala Jayathilake – this year scored 671 runs at an average of 41.94 including 7 half centuries.

JIM DAVIES CUP for Best Single senior performance or representative season:

Stan Mair – Stans 7-18 in the 2^nd innings of the Hawke Cup match against Mid Canterbury in Ashburton ripped the heart out of their resistance leading to a comfortable outright victory by SC.

PHIL D’AUVERGNE TROPHY for player who contributed most on and off the field for the senior rep team: Chosen by Coach and players.

Stan Mair – he might appear to be the quiet bloke in the room, but is at every practice, usually first to every match, and always keen to play and especially to contribute, not only to make just himself a better cricketer, but as a team man always keen to contribute in his own way to the team around him, and as such has the players respect at all times.

Ernie Aitchieson Fair Play award on and off the field for youth cricketer:

Edward (Ed) Heenan – a quiet achiever Ed has opened the batting for Roncalli, scored a century during the season. However it is off the field that he comes the fore, always at practice, or volunteering to help with cricket. He umpired at the SIPS Cricket tournament, but also has helped SC Cricket running holiday programmes, does the scoring and is always available to help with those often unseen jobs, and is the sort of player we want involved with our clubs in the future and a deserving recipient.

SCCUA GRAEME LOWRIE SPIRIT OF CRICKET AWARD for the senior cricketer who epitomizes the way the game should be played: Decided by Umpires

Adrian (AC) Cunningham. This was a game between Temuka V Timaru. The batsman on strike (AC Cunningham) played at a quick delivery from Dinesh De Silva. The ball swung late, heading towards leg stump. The ball went down to fine leg. The two batsmen ran one single. AC Cunningham got to the non-strikers end, and said straight away.

“Ump I never hit the ball and I never played a shot at the ball, would you like to withdraw the run”.

The umpire called and signal dead ball to the scorers, and got an acknowledgement from the scorers. The two batsman returned to their original ends. We feel that AC’s attitude to the game has improved especially over the last 2 seasons, and are happy to award him this trophy.

SOUTH CANTERBURY SUPPORTERS CLUB TROPHY – To player/Umpire/Administrator who contributes most on or off the field:

David Fisher – David as you will know has been Chairman of the SC Board of Control for the last 2 years and takes a very active hands on approach. However he also finds the time to be heavily involved with coaching of junior cricket as he helps the young players gain a similar passion for cricket that he has. He has coached the Primary Yr 5&6 side previously and the Primary A side the last 2 seasons and now is looking after a TBHS side as well as the SC U15s. You can find him at matches most weekends, morning and afternoon, and as a volunteer certainly gives 110% to anything he is involved with. This award shows that his efforts are appreciated, but not an excuse to stop just yet!

ALLAN EDGINTON TROPHY for Sports Personality of the year:

South Island Primary Schools Cricket Tournament (SIPSCT) Organising Committee.

The organizing committee led by Chairman Harvey King alongside John Davies, Peter Scott, Richard Davidson, John Threlkeld, Peter Walsh, David Fisher and Mark Medlicott spent over a year putting together the 2017 tournament which proved to be one of the most successful tournaments ever run. Feedback from Districts across the South Island has only been complimentary, and this reflects on the committee putting things in place to run such a successful event, and are worthy winners of this trophy.

GRAEME BLANCHARD MEMORIAL TROPHY:

For a youth cricketer who displays an excellent attitude on and off the field for fair play, a team player who inspires the spirit of cricket and has good work ethics.

Also includes some gear (pads, etc) given by the ANZ bank to help promote his game.

Shaun Rooney captained the SC U17 side and was selected for the U17 Canterbury Tri Series, also scored 207 runs @ 73 in the three traditional inter-schools including 152 against Waitaki BHS while also taking 6/25 (2 x honours board performances in the same match) – also scored a further three centuries in Chch Metro competition this year finishing with 130 last Saturday.

He has also won the Mark Parker Memorial Scholarship to go to Winchester in England and is a youth cricketer with drive, a great demeanour, and all the attributes that make him the ideal recipient of this award.
