South Canterbury Cricket Green LogoSouth Canterbury’s youngest representative cricket team mimicked their seniors after turning a difficult position into what seemed an unlikely win. You can probably count on your fingers how many times our Yr 5 & 6 boys have been our big city neighbours over the years, so this effort by this year’s boys should not be underestimated, and it would be great if it bodes well for future seasons ahead.

Below is a report receuved about the match.

The South Canterbury boys took to the field in high spirits but some outstanding batting from the Metro boys meant that at drinks they were 97 without loss. Metro retired their opening batsmen, and South Canterbury battled to finally get their first wicket through a good catch by Oliver Linton off Jock Rollinson’s bowling. Kade MacMillan then had success with an LBW. Henry Scott bowled well and was rewarded with a wicket when Jordy Sew Hoy took an impressive catch. Metro scored 242-3 off their 40 overs.

South Canterbury started the run chase well with some awesome shots by Liam Simpson including a massive 6 down long on bringing up the 50 partnership pretty quickly. Unfortunately Kade MacMillan was injured early on and had to leave the field, bringing Toby Clemmet to the crease. Liam was out for 34. Toby watched as we lost 4 quick wickets bringing Jock in to bat.

They batted well together but Toby was caught for 21. At drinks we were 122 for 5. After drinks Jock was bowled out for 21. We don’t know what was in the water but we lost 3 wickets for 7 runs bringing Fletcher Rhodes and Lucas Histen together in the middle. They scored quickly until Lucas was run out making the score 160 for 9 which meant the return of the previously injured Kade back to the crease.

As we watched these two boys bat, Fletcher’s confidence grew as he hit 12 fours on his way to an unbeaten 64 leading South Canterbury to an unlikely victory with great support from Kade who finished with 35 not out.
