Day Two – South Canterbury rue missed catches
The South Canterbury year 6 cricket team suffered a first-innings defeat to Christchurch Metro Fleming at their Canterbury Districts tournament, yesterday.
The match was initially postponed after rain in Christchurch on Tuesday.
A dramatic batting collapse saw South Canterbury post 105 all out, which Christchurch Metro Fleming chased down. They eventually finished their 40 overs on 146 for five.
Cormack Tarrant (16) and Ben Davenport (23) put on 30 for the second wicket and then Harrison Darling (14) and Davenport added 34 runs for the third wicket.
However, there was little resistance after that.
South Canterbury coach Ants de Joux said his bowlers did not have enough runs to defend.
Darling tried just as hard with the ball as he did the bat.
He finished with figures of two for six from eight overs in a losing effort.
De Joux said his team dropped three catches they should have taken and were made to pay for it.
Their tournament will end today with a match against Canterbury Country South.
Day One – Year 6 side beats Christchurch Metro
The South Canterbury year 6 team started the Canterbury Districts tournament with a 21-run win over Christchurch Metro Hadlee yesterday.
South Canterbury’s bowlers were able to defend 125 all out, restricting Christchurch Metro to 104 for nine in their 40 overs.
Opening batsmen Luka Foy (10) and Cormack Tarrant (20) put on 23 for the first wicket and then Tarrant and Ben Davenport added 41 for the second wicket.
From there, South Canterbury lost wickets on a regular basis but scrambled through to a competitive total, despite being bowled out with five overs remaining.
The South Canterbury bowlers then slowed the Christchurch Metro run chase.
Left-arm offspinner Nick Goodwin took two for 15, and the medium pace of Davenport managed two for 13.
South Canterbury coach Ants de Joux said his team was able to force the opposition to score at a run-a-ball, which the Metro players could not achieve.
He said his bowlers conceded just four wides, a major factor in the match outcome.
South Canterbury play Christchurch Metro Cairns today.
