The saying ‘Nice Garry’ echoed around Mountainview High School on Saturday as Star allrounder Garry Paine helped his side to a nine-wicket win over Pleasant Point.

The saying, started by Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade to motivate team-mate Nathan Lyon, proved apt as Paine contributed with bat and ball.

He nabbed the first four wickets in Point’s batting effort, then returned with bat in hand to bludgeon an unbeaten 63 to easily chase down the 115 required to win.

Saturday was the opening round of the South Canterbury modified one-day competition and Star and Celtic bagged maximum points.

Pleasant Point were in trouble early against Star, reduced to 26-6 thanks to Star’s opening bowling duo of Paine and Brayden Lindsay.

Paine’s crafty skills with the ball saw him dismiss Tim Leonard (2), Bailey Dryden (1), Al Harvey (10) and Will Harvey (4) to have them reeling at 18-4.

Point’s lower order tried their best to resurrect things with Sean Wills batting superbly for 43, while Latham Gibb made 21 and Al Brady 20.

Wills showed lots of patience before falling to Lindsay.

Leg spinner Dale Warwood picked up two wickets for Star, while Hamish Dickson bagged the other.

In reply, Adam Fahey fell for 8 in what was otherwise a superb chase from Star.

Paine led the way, while Phil McGregor made an unbeaten 34.

Celtic carried on last weekend’s strong form with a dominant display against Temuka.

After putting the visitors into bat, the green machine made immediate inroads.

Warren Morgan went for 1 and while Jamie Trezise (19), Nick Maguire (17 not out) and Josh Rooney (14) all made double figures, the rest of the order fell quickly, leaving Temuka with 81 to defend.

Dan Laming was again outstanding with the ball, nabbing three wickets.

Tom Pavletich also got three, while Ben Watson picked up two.

The small total was never going to be enough with Willie Wright in a punishing mood as he smashed 49 not out to get the team home in just 14 overs.

Pavletich made 15 and Jeremy Liddy 11 not out.

Celtic and Star will clash next weekend leaving one team unbeaten, while Temuka and Timaru do battle with both teams after a victory.
