Veteran seam bowler Kevin Teahen has done it again.
Teahen produced a masterful display with the ball to capture his second successive five-wicket bag in the second round of the senior modified one-day competition.
It was the first of three double header weekends scheduled before Christmas with the opening round of the Twenty20 competition getting underway on Friday night.
Teahen, who plays for Temuka, said it was good to claim some more wickets.
“I felt I bowled pretty well the ball is coming out nicely and that’s largely down to bowling week in week out,” he said.
The 37-year-old said there is no secret ingredient to his success.
“I think playing every week is why. I’m finding the right lengths now and as I play more cricket the better I feel the ball is coming out.”
He said it was nice to increase his career wicket tally closer to 420.
“I have taken about 18 this season so i’m sitting at roughly 415,” he said.
In the modified format, Temuka were too classy in their four wicket win over Star, Celtic and Pleasant Point were forced to share points due to the match being abandoned by rain and Timaru romped to an eight wicket win over Waimate.
Star lost the toss and were put into bat. The visiting side never had any real momentum throughout their innings with Jacques Marais (24) and Chris Hyde (40) providing the only real substance in Star’s innings of 107.
Hyde was particularly aggressive on anything slightly over pitched.
Teahen was the star claiming 5-39 off 13 overs while Kevin Kerse also bowled well picking up two wickets.
In reply a quality opening spell by Star pace bowlers Alex McDuff (2-23) and Craig Hinton (4-24) had Temuka in real strife at 5-30 before Dillon Lees (48 not out) and Jamie Tresize (38) saw the side home through to 108/6 in just 27 overs.
Timaru hosted Waimate at Ashbury Park and the under-strength visitors were completely outplayed.
They could only manage 98 batting first with Mile Medlicott (26) and Glen Drake (23) providing the only real substance for Waimate.
South Canterbury Cricket chief executive Mark Medlicott even donned the whites for Waimate and made three with the bat before running himself out.
Once again Supeshala Jayathilake was the star with the ball claiming 4-15 while Alex Lankeshwar chipped in with 3-10.
Timaru wasted no time in chasing down the runs taking just 18 overs, Jayathilake was unbeaten on 59 and Sam Porter helped out with 34 as the side finished 102-2.
Celtic faced Pleasant Point at Celtic and after winning the toss decided to bat first.
They made 243/6 from their 50 overs with Adam Beck and Jake Naylor putting on 81 for the opening wicket. Beck top scored with 53 while Naylor made 45, Dan Laming contributed 35, Sam Carlaw (32) and Liam Beck 28. Cameron Lundie was the best bowler for Point picking up 3-42.
Pleasant Point made on of their better starts with the bat, racing through to 79/2 before the rain set in and the game was called off.
Tim Leonard was unbeaten on 44 while Bailey Dryden scored 17.
Twenty20
Meanwhile in the Twenty20 round on Friday night, Timaru defeated Star by six wickets, Celtic beat Pleasant Point by eight wicket and Temuka smashed Waimate by nine wickets.
Plesant Point made 128-7 from their 20 overs with Blair Brown top scoring with 25 and Tim Bell made 23.
James Laming was the best bowler with 2-21.
Celtic made it through to 130-2 just two down with Willy Wright scoring a thumping 52 not out.
Star were put into bat by Timaru at Mountain View High School and staggered through to 115-7 with Adam Fahey (34) top scoring before he was run out.
Timaru scored 116-4 in reply and made it home with six balls to spare thanks to Prabodha Arthavidu’s (37) and Josh Smallridge chipping in with (30).
The game at Aorangi Oval saw Temuka cruise to an easy victory in just 11 overs.
Waimate made 116-8 with Glen Drake top scoring with 50, in reply Temuka lost just one wicket as they ended on 117-1 with Nick Horsley unbeaten on (55) and Phill Lill (37 not out).
Temuka top the modified table with 18 points followed by Celtic, Timaru, Star, Pleasant Point and Waimate.
