Celtic’s Sam Carlaw maiden Senior century
A maiden senior century to Celtic’s Sam Carlaw put Timaru to the sword and has kept Temuka’s faint Tweedy Cup final hopes alive.
After dismissing Timaru for 141 on the first day of the last round of the senior two-day cricket competition at Celtic Sports Grounds on Saturday, Carlaw struck 120 not out to go with three wickets.
The defending champions amassed 319 for seven from their 60 overs for a lead of 178 runs to potentially set up an innings victory on day two this Saturday.
Phil Johnston also had a strong day with four wickets with his medium pace in-swingers.
Captain Jimmy Laming made an immediate impact after returning from injury with a half century while brother, Dan, also made 90 in support of Carlaw.
Temuka will earn first innings points against Roncalli/Celtic at Ashbury Park. The Magpies need an outright victory to have a mathematical chance of displacing Timaru from the final.
After they won the toss and posted 203 all out, they restricted the hosts to 131 for eight from 53 overs.
Temuka opener Willie Stone produced his second 50 in as many weeks. He hit nine fours and a six to get Temuka off to a positive start.
Roncalli/Celtic seamers James Brosnahan and Grant Watt did well to pull it back by taking three wickets each on a pitch which saw the odd delivery bounce more than normal.
The home team’s reply with the bat was slow but it frustrated Temuka at times as they looked to advance the game.
Adam Beck made 37 at No 3 while his brother, Liam, kept the lower-order together with an unbeaten 21.
Vaughan Tarrant’s three for 26 and Nathan McNicol and Nick McGuire’s two wickets kept the brakes on the batsmen.
Rain ruled out play between Waimate and Star.
