South Canterbury win Hawke Cup match outright over Otago Country

Dinesh de Silva 8-31

Dinesh de Silva 8-31

A superb bowling effort by Dinesh de Silva with 8 wickets for just 31 runs, and a maiden century (114) by Glen Drake were the catalysts for a superb team performance as South Canterbury took maximum points from their Hawke Cup match with Otago Country at Aorangi Oval to keep their challenge chances alive.

In hot conditions the Otago Country side won the toss and decided to bat first, a decision they would soon regret as they fell to 11-2 in just the eighth over as the South Canterbury opening bowlers quickly found their rhythm, line and length with Stan Mair making the initial breakthrough in just his second over.

Mair who bowled superbly on his way to 4-28 had good support from de Silva (1-19), Craig Hinton (2-28) and captain Sam Carlaw (2-30) as there was no respite for the batsmen with ‘golden arm’ Ben Watson removing Country’s best batsman, debutant  Cam Jackson for 39.

South Canterbury’s fielding matched their bowling with wicketkeeper Phil Lill taking all four chances offered while Carlaw also picked up 3 catches, and a scorecard that showed zero extras was just reward as Otago Country was dismissed for 120 in the 54th over.

South Canterbury’s chase began solidly as openers Carlaw (28) and debutant George Morgan (15) saw them safely through the first hour to tea at 41-0.

Glen Drake scored maiden Hawke Cup century with 114

Glen Drake scored maiden Hawke Cup century with 114

After tea wickets fell and the home team was 70-4 before Drake found a solid partner in de Silva (23) and together  they added 75 runs for the 5th wicket and gave South Canterbury first innings points at the same time. Despite a couple of wickets South Canterbury were happy with their day on 160-5 at stumps as they looked to only bat once with Drake 74no and Josh Smallridge (also on debut) 4no.

Day 2 dawned as warm as ever and the loss of two early wickets brought Watson alongside Drake and they quickly added 72 runs in better than even time with Drake realising the promise he has always shown with his maiden Hawke Cup century, an innings that included 22 boundaries at just under a run a ball, very impressive scoring when compared with other innings.

When Drake was eighth out with SC on 236, Watson carried on his powerful cameo before he was last out caught in the deep for 49, an innings that included 8 fours, a five and a six and gave his team a lead of 134 runs.

An early wicket to de Silva was followed by Otago Country’s best partnership of the match, as they went to lunch at 51-1.

However after lunch South Canterbury went back to their opening bowlers who delivered when de Silva, who had bowled well the whole match, was rewarded as his array of slower balls had the batsmen confounded. He started his onslaught with a diving caught and bowled to dismiss Liam Cotton for 21 and then had his team mates take a further six catches, before his figures of 7-19 at that stage were mildly damaged by the final pair of Sam Blakely and Tommy Myles as they added 34 for the last wicket to get Otago Country to 135 and require South Canterbury to bat again. De Silva’s 8-31 off 15.5 overs was great reward for a stirling effort.

Chasing 2 runs to win, one of those strange situations that can arise in cricket happened again as Otago Country’s Tommy Myles took a hatrick in his first over to have South Canterbury 0-3 before Matt Brown calmly pushed the ball into the offside for two on the 6th ball to give South Canterbury the win.

In a fortnight South Canterbury take on Southland in Invercargill and the outcome of that match may determine the challenger from Zone 4.

South Canterbury played Southland Country in their first game of the South Island Primary School Cricket Tournament in Nelson.

Things started well with captain Toby Clemett winning the toss on a wicket effected by showers the previous day, he promptly chose to bowl.

Luke Slee set the tone with a wicket on the first ball of the match. A fine bowling and fielding display followed resulting in Southland Country being dismissed for 61. Leading wicket takers were Jock Rollinson (3), Lucas Histon, Harry Schmack and Dougal Gibson with two each.

SC started their innings brightly with 23 off the first four overs before losing opener Oliver Linton. A good partnership of 51 between Flynn Smith (21) and Clemett followed for the second wicket. SC declared on 192 for 4 after 30 overs with an outstanding knock from Clemett of 91 off 89 balls, including 13 fours. He was well supported by Fletcher Rhodes, 34 not out off 33.

Our batsman worked hard in difficult conditions against a quality attack.

Heading into the field in improving batting conditions Canterbury Country battled against our opening bowlers. South Canterbury were asked to bat again, trailing by 113. Their second turn at bat was interrupted a number of times by rain with Country looking for an outright win. Day 3 Match Report

South Canterbury v Dunedin Metro – Abandoned due to rain

Day 4 Match Report

South Canterbury v Buller

SC started by winning the toss and choosing to put Buller in to bat on a good track with a damp outfield after heavy rain in the past 36 hours in Nelson.

What followed was a consistent and polished bowling and fielding display resulting in Buller being dismissed for 60 in 19.4 overs. Lucas Histon was rewarded for a fiery spell of fast bowling with figures of 4 for 7 off 5 overs.  He was backed up by Dougal Gibson with 3 for 13 off 5 and Eli Kerse 2 for 4 off 2.

SC replied with 166 for 5, declaring after 27 overs. This was set up by an opening partnership of 108, from Fletcher Rhodes 50 and Jock Rollinson 78.

Buller were content to occupy the crease, with the threat of rain lingering, which halted play a number of times. They were eventually dismissed for 76 off 24 overs, not before some drama as the match was suspended with them 9 down and talk of the game being abandoned. The tournament director instructed the covers to be removed and play resume, amidst Buller’s protests. Henry Scott, 2 for 12 off 7, claimed the last wicket in the first over of resumed play.

Outstanding bowling from Kerse, 3 for 10 off 3 overs, gave him 5 wickets for the match along with Histon, 1 for 11 off 3. Other bowlers to contribute were Harry Schmack 2 for 10 off 3 and Rollinson 2 for 14 off 2.

SC finished the 14 region tournament 3rd, which was won by Canterbury Country.

Coaches Jaime Linton and Nigel Clemett were extremely happy with the performance of the team. Noting their outstanding fielding, a number of spectacular catches taken during the week, which backed up their bowlers and the consistent batting by their top order.

Pleasant Point win first Senior Title

Pleasant Point Cricket Club won their first Senior title after moving into senior ranks three seasons ago, getting across the line against the Temuka side who had been unbeaten until now this season in the final of the 60/60 over competition at Aorangi Ovl on Saturday.

A very good final with the team in ascendency changing throughout the match saw Will Harvey with 38 runs from 34 balls with good support from George MacDougall in his best innings of the season (8no) get Pleasant Point home with two wickets and 17 balls to spare.

Pleasant Point won the toss and decided to bowl first, a good decision as they soon had Temuka 23-3. However Temuka captain Glen Drake set about changing the script as he and Warren Morgan added 57 for the 4th wicket.

Drake showed a full array of strokes, scoring at  run a ball as he looked like scoring a century before a top edge off a pull shot saw him the eighth batsman out for 90 in the 51st over, but by then Temuka were looking much better at 168-8.

Dillon Lees then played a real cameo scoring 37 off 31 balls including 4 sixes to help Temuka to a very competitive 205 all out.

Pleasant Point lost their first wicket with only 13 runs on the board, before solid partnerships built around opener Joe Williams who batted 2 1/2 hours for his 63, supported by twins Liam and Adam Beck, both with 35 had Point on target at 143-4.

However the loss of these three batsmen gave Temuka a sniff and with the spin of Herath (3-35) and Drake (2-46) to the fore, Point lost a further 4 wickets for 25 runs and with the score 169-8 it looked to be going Temuka’s way.

However Will Harvey found support from MacDougall and together over the next six overs took Point close and then eventually to the win, leaving a disheartened Temuka side to congratulate a jubilant Pleasant Point side, club and supporters as they achieved their first ever senior win.

South Canterbury first innings gives North Otago Hawke Cup points despite fightback

A dismal first innings by South Canterbury, even considering the worst of conditions to bat gave North Otago the momentum and important first innings points in their Hawke Cup encounter at Centennial Park in Oamaru over the weekend.

Put in to bat with overcast conditions and a greenish pitch, South Canterbury quickly lost wickets and with only No 4 Liam Beck last out for 25, Jake Naylor 13 and Dinesh de Silva 11 making double figures the total of 77 was still well short of a par score.

In reply South Canterbury looked like holding North Otago to a small lead when they had them 106-6 and then 123-7 but the tail wagged with Francois Mostert holding an end up on his way to a top score of 45no as North Otago for through to 175, a lead of 98 runs.

For South Canterbury, captain Sam Carlaw led the bowing taking 4-37 off 20 overs while Dinesh de Silva put ina huge spell to be miserly with 3-41 off 17 overs.

However with a big job ahead to try and first pass the North Otago score and try and avoid an outright, or better still get into a position where we could chase an outright, there was a sigh of relief when Joe Williams and Carlaw managed to get SC trough the 8 overs to stumps on 15 without loss overnight.

Day 2 began and wickets began to fall as both openers and Beck were gone with the score only on 54, still 45 in deficit.

However when Jake Naylor was joined by Glen Drake the pair set about knocking those runs off. Naylor fell for 42 but by then SC had a 6 run lead, and with an attacking mindset from Drake who brought up his fifty off 49 balls SC went to lunch 41 runs ahead and thinking positively about setting a declaration target.

After lunch Drake lost some of his momentum as he wasn’t getting to face as many balls, and eventually was out for 72 when the total was 71. However de Silva then picked up from his century the previous week as he posted his fifty, and with Phil Lill, Ben Watson and Stan Mair all getting into double figure, South Canterbury eventually were all out for a much improved 250, leaving North Otago a target of 153 for an outright victory, and more importantly 38 overs for SC to try and dismiss North Otago.

A fired up Stan Mair bowlinbg pretty quickly soon got into the North Otago batsmen on his way to a haul of 5-55. North Otago looked vulnerable at 28-4, and again at 50-5 but then the experienced head of their skipper Mostert closed up shop as they decided to settle on their first innings points and not go for the outright.

South Canterbury picked up one more wicket, but the other bowlers couldn’t get the extra breakthroughs needed and North Otago finished on 111-6 when play ended and took the 8 first innings points thankfully.

Pleasant Point go top, while Timaru earn first points of 60-over competition with victory

Dan Laming had a strong game for Celtic, taking six wickets and scoring 25 runs.

Dan Laming had a strong game for Celtic, taking six wickets and scoring 25 runs.

The Pleasant Point cricket club’s senior team has come a long way since entering the South Canterbury competition three years ago.

The side recorded a hard fought 4-run victory over Celtic at the weekend, showing how much they’ve improved since the 2015 season. In their debut season they picked up the odd win, which followed by a semifinal and finals appearance last year.

Their latest victory came at Rockdale Road, the home of perennial champions Celtic and probably the hardest ground to win on in South Canterbury.

Batting first, Point struggled through to a total of 100 as Adam Beck provided the backbone of the innings with his knock of 40.

Left-hander Beck, who opened the innings, fell with the score on 64 and was the only Point batsmen to post score of any substance, while Chris Diedriks, Latham Gibb and Bailey Dryden also posted double figure scores.

Celtic’s bowling attack was led by Dan Laming, who produced a superb spell to nab six wickets, while Sam Carlaw chipped in with two.

In reply, Celtic tried valiantly to chase down the modest total, with Dan Laming making 25 and Andy Scott 19 but they were unable to help the defending champions home.

Celtic fell for 96, with George McDougall starring with the ball for Pleasant Point by grabbing five wickets, while South Canterbury strike bowler Stan Mair was also in good form picking up three wickets.

Cameron Lundie came on late in the piece to take the final two wickets for Point to give them a well deserved victory.

It was Point’s second successive victory in the 60-over competition.

Meanwhile, in the game at Ashbury Park, Timaru recorded a two-wicket victory over winless Star.

Their victory was thanks to a strong partnership from Sri Lankan pair Pat Wickramasinghe (40) and Sasindu Nanayakkara, who hit 58.

Timaru chased down the 161 needed for victory, after Blair Gunn (42), Phil McGregor (33) and Matt Brown (30) helped Star put runs on the board.

The total was probably 15 runs light.

Zane Sanders was the best of the Timaru bowlers, taking four wickets with his left-arm spinners, while Harry Greenhalgh and Jason Stevenson claimed three each.

At 120-1 Timaru looked well poised to secure victory before Wickramasinghe and Nanayakkara both fell to Star veteran Craig Hinton.

Four more quick wickets had Star back in the game but a handy knock of 11 by Sam Robinson helped the team home.

Hinton, Brown and leg-spinner Dale Warwood all took two wickets each for Star.

Next weekend Point face Temuka in what is set to be an evenly fought clash, while Timaru and Celtic collide with the loser out of contention for the 60-over final.

Hinton and Brown shine as South Canterbury fall to southern neighbours

Craig Hinton runs into bowl against North Otago at Aorangi Oval. He helped himself to five wickets.

Craig Hinton runs into bowl against North Otago at Aorangi Oval. He helped himself to five wickets.

Star duo Craig Hinton and Matt Brown showed their class for South Canterbury in a losing cause against North Otago.

South Canterbury’s talented batting lineup again failed to fire as Brown and Adam Beck were the only players to make the most of their opportunities.

The top order featuring, George Morgan, Jacob Naylor (13), Willie Stone and Liam Beck were all gone with South Canterbury on just 20.

Captain Glen Drake, Phil Lill and allrounder Shaun Rooney also came and went in quick succession.

For the second week in a row, South Canterbury had to rely on Brown to get them out of a hole and he did just that.

The allrounder, who came to the crease in the ninth over, three earlier than last week, had to go about rescuing South Canterbury.

He played a number of quality shots and was able to score with more freedom.

Brown’s 86, his highest score for South Canterbury, came off 93 balls and featured 15 fours.

Adam Beck, who hit a classy 43 batting at number nine, put on 82 with Brown in a key seventh wicket partnership.

When Brown departed to a good catch just 14 runs shy of his 100, Beck took on the aggressive approach, slapping six consecutive boundaries.

He was the last to fall as South Canterbury made 168, a defendable score after their early troubles.

North Otago opening bowler Brad Fleming was superb nabbing four wickets.

Hinton led the way with the ball as he nabbed his good mate, North Otago’s Duncan Drew caught behind with his second delivery.

He was at it again soon after removing Jordan Cafferkey to a good catch in the slips by George Morgan and had Francois Mostert leg before wicket.

Hinton also ran out Brady Kingan off his own bowling.

At 26-4, the match was evenly balanced before a 94-run partnership from Jeremy Smith (73) and Lachie Kingan (42), turned the game the way of the visitors.

The pair played a number of strong shots and wrestled the momentum back from South Canterbury.

Hinton then returned to pick up both Smith and Kingan to make it five wickets for the day and he was unlucky not to have more.

Three dropped chances in his final over meant James Ferris (22no) and Regan George (21no) were able to guide North Otago to victory.

Hinton starred with 5-40, while George McDougall also went well for no reward.

Short Scorecard

South Canterbury 168 (M Brown 86, A Beck 43; B Fleming 4-21, J Ferris 3-20) lost to North Otago 170-6 (J Smith 73, L Kingan 42, J Ferris 22*, R George 21*; C Hinton 5-40) by four wickets.

Temuka’s Warren Morgan lining up for a cut shot against Star, with wicketkeeper Paul Arkinstall watching on.

In the first round of South Canterbury Cricket’s new 60-over modified competition, Pleasant Point and Temuka recorded wins.

Point batted first against Timaru and made 247 thanks to contributions from Liam Beck (84), Adam Beck (59) and new recruit Joe Williams (55).

Williams a former Canterbury Country player, looked good in his debut outing and would be a good addition to the South Canterbury top order.

Jason Stevenson with three wickets and Zane Sanders with two were the best Timaru bowlers.

In reply, Timaru fell for 161 runs, with Josh Smallridge top scoring with 40.

Other contributions were made by Jordan Low with 35 and Brad Leonard 30.

Point’s best with the ball was off-spinner Sean Wills who grabbed four wickets.

Temuka kept their perfect start to the season going, with a 27-run win over Star.

Batting first Temuka snuck through to 150, thanks to a hard hit 28 from Dillon Lees and a 10th wicket partnership of 27 from Josh Rooney and Jamie Trezise.

Dale Warwood was Star’s best with the ball, claiming three wickets.

Star’s reply began poorly as they lost Morgan and Brown cheaply.

Phil McGregor, with the game’s highest score of 31, and Adam Fahey with 25 tried to restore things but when the latter fell, Star started to stumble.

Tyler Cox made a fighting 23 with a couple of lusty blows but it was all in vain as Star fell short.

Temuka’s best with the ball were Drake and Hayden Broker.
