Nick Maguire 5 – 25 with his leg spin
A five-wicket bag from Nick Maguire and 58 from Nick Horsley were the highlights in Temuka’s comprehensive 100-run win over Waimate in Temuka on Saturday.
Morning rain saw the matches between Temuka and Waimate, and Timaru and Pleasant Point, reduced to 40 overs, while Celtic and Star abandoned their match without a ball being bowled.
Temuka bagged their second consecutive victory and showed they will be the team to beat in the early rounds after a dominant display.
Having won the toss Horsley decided Temuka would bat first.
After losing Willie Stone early, Phil Lill and Horsley set about getting the innings back on track. They managed to get the score through to 47 before Lill became the first of Alan Reid’s two victims.
Temuka then lost three quick wickets, with Dillonn Lees, Jamie Trezise and Robbie Barry all falling to the left-arm off spin of Glen Drake. At 72-5, Waimate were looking at dismissing the home team for less than 100, however that didn’t eventuate.
Horsley continued his strong start to the season with another half-century and received some valuable support from Vaughan Tarrant with 19, Kevin Kerse 30 and Kevin Teahen 24.
When Horsley was finally dismissed to a good catch by Drake, Temuka were well placed and managed to get through to 187-8 off their 40 overs.
Waimate were confident they could chase that down, however what transpired next was quite the opposite.
They struggled to get the ball into gaps and rotata the strike, leaving them behind the eight ball.
A couple of early wickets slowed the side down and from there on they were always fighting to keep up.
Drake managed 19 before he became one of Maguire’s five scalps, while Jason Sew Hoy provided some lusty late hitting to top score with 23.
Waimate managed only 87 off 34.1 overs in reply.
Maguire had the visiting batsmen in all sorts of trouble with his leg-spin and at one stage of the innings he was on a hat-trick.
Temuka did spill a couple of catches, but they were never going to change the outcome of the match.
Teahen, Kerse and Tarrant all supported Maguire at the bowling crease.
Pleasant Point found out first hand just how tough the step up to senior is with their match with Timaru at Ashbury Park lasting 35.1 overs after the visitors were bundled out for just 64.
New Sri Lankan recruit Supeshala Jayathilake was outstanding with the ball, claiming 4-13. Hayden Leonard supported him with 2-10. Tuimaru’s fielding was superb claiming two run outs.
Brad Tegellaars again top scored with 26, while extras were next top scorer with 20.
In reply Timaru took just 15.1 overs to reach the target with captain Prabodha Arthavidu unbeated on 27 and Alex Lankeshwar contributed 13.
