The driving force behind Waimate’s watershed cricket season has been honoured at the South Canterbury Cricket Awards night.
All rounder Alan Reid received the Club Bowler of the Year award last night after taking 55 wickets at an average of 15 runs per wicket for the season.
He can also lay claim to being the best South Canterbury club player for the season, after shouldering the opening duties with not only the ball, where he took six for 95 from 44 overs in the Tweedy Cup two-day final, but with the bat, where he finished the seventh highest run scorer with 339 runs.
Celtic captain Craig Davies topped the batting statistics yet again with 792 runs at an average of 99 runs per innings.
Reid, who is currently unavailable for the South Canterbury team, also won the Spirit of Cricket Award for how he approached and played the game.
The 33-year-old said he relished the diversity of his role within the club.
He said consistency in players had lead to Waimate’s success.
“It’s been the same core of guys for a while now and it’s been a real team effort to get here.”
Talented teenager Glen Drake relished his first full season as a senior player with Waimate.
Drake was named Young Player of the Year after scoring 532 runs at an average of 26, placing him third in the batting statistics behind Davies and his club captain Jason Sew Hoy.
The left-handed batsman also took 26 wickets with his left-arm off-spin, at an average of 14.
Roncalli College’s opening batsman Tom Pavletich was named under 18 player of the year.
Celtic spinner Sam Carlaw picked up best player in the under 21 and under 23-year-old categories.
Temuka’s Ritchie Preston won the award for best single performance for South Canterbury.
His run-a-ball 110, allowing South Canterbury to take an outright win over Otago Country and keep them in the hunt for a Hawke Cup challenge, which never eventuated.
South Canterbury failed to have one Waimate player in the South Canterbury team this season despite their success.
South Canterbury coach Richard Davidson has hinted Drake would likely receive a call-up next season.
Canterbury Cricket chief executive Lee Germon attended last night’s awards and congratulated South Canterbury Cricket for their recent growth in player numbers.
South Canterbury Cricket president Andrew McRae said they were keen to host more domestic matches next season.
Injured Black Cap and Timaruvian Hamish Bennett was the guest speaker.
