Celtic maintained their stranglehold on the Placemakers South Canterbury Twenty20 competition with a 30-run win over Waimate in the final last night.

Waimate looked on track to be the first team other than Celtic to win the competition in its four- year history, but in fading light at Aorangi Oval their batting wilted after a bright start.

After holding Celtic to 146 for four from their 20 overs, Waimate slumped from 50 without loss to be all out for 116.

Glenn Matthews hit a quickfire 43 for Celtic to revive their faltering innings.

The former fast bowler hit four sixes and two fours in his knock.

Dan Laming anchored the innings from No 3 with 43 not out, however, Waimate were satisfied with their effort in the field, with 160 being a par score in the competition this season.

Waimate could thank spinner Ben Millar for restricting the total as he finished with figures of one for 16 from his four overs, while Simon Murphy’s second spell removed Matthews just as he looked set for a big score.

The veteran seamer finished with two for 19 from four overs.

Brothers Jason and Nathan Sew Hoy got Waimate off to the best possible start by putting on 50 runs for the first wicket in just six overs.

However, they both departed off successive balls in Dan Laming’s second over and Waimate never recovered.

Top-quality outfield catches from James Laming, Sam Carlaw, and a diving catch with the gloves from Matthews to remove the dangerous Waimate captain, Glen Drake, were features of Celtic’s fielding effort. James Laming’s nagging seamers were crucial as he took three for 12 from four overs, which included two maidens.

In light that was not enough to play in, Waimate’s tailenders were asked to swing from the get-go, which was never going to work.

They could not find the boundary regularly enough, and Celtic held their catches to the end.
