Willie Stone scored a fifty at the Rock
A determined and gritty 59 from Temuka opener Willie Stone was the catalyst in his side’s victory over the previously unbeaten Celtic in the third round of the Modified One-Day competition.
They played on a reasonably flat wicket at Celtic Sports Ground, on Rockdale Road, in what was an entertaining game of cricket.
Temuka bowled out Celtic for 173 and then chased it down, ending their innings on 174-7.
South Canterbury player coach Nick Horsley, who plays for Temuka, said it was great for the side to get the win.
“We played well and managed to claim the victory.”
He made special praise of Stone and fellow batsman Johnny Geddes.
“They both batted really well. Willie got us off to a positive start and then Johnny was able to see us home.”
Horsley said Celtic were spirited in their performance.
“They certainly made us work hard. Watty [Grant Watt] bowled really well for them and Willy Wright produced an aggressive knock.”
Phill Lill, Kevin Kerse and Nick Maguire combined beautifully for Temuka to take all 10 of Celtic’s wickets between them.
Watt starred with the ball for Celtic bagging 3-36.
Timaru and Star produced another enthralling encounter at Mountain View with the visiting side again victorious.
After being sent into bat, Star looked set for a score of more than 200 after being 84-3, but the wheels again fell off in their batting effort and they were bundled out for 125.
Spin play a big part in the downfall with with Prabodha Arthavidu and Supeshala Jayathilake combining to take the final seven Star wickets for just 41 runs.
Jayathilake ended with a miserly 3-8 and Arthavidu claimed 4-17.
In reply, a couple of early wickets to Alex McDuff and Craig Hinton had Star on top but a 60-run partnership between Josh Dick and Jayathilake turned the match Timaru’s way.
Dick scored 31 and Jayathilake top scored with 35.
A run out, losing Jayathilake caught and bowled and the reintroduction of Craig Hinton turned the match on its heels. He picked up Sam Robinson, Brad Leonard and Alex Lankeshwar in quick succession to give Star a sniff at victory.
But Josh Smallridge with 19 and and Jeremy Smallridge nought not out got Timaru home.
A standout performance with the ball from Waimate captain Glen Drake was not enough to lead his side to a victory over Pleasant Point.
He took 6-26 to help restrict Point to 158.
Latham Gibb top scored with a classy 42 while Stanley Mair was unbeaten on 40 and Blair Brown made 27.
In reply Stanley Mair capped off his runs in the first innings with a five-wicket haul.
He proved too classy and quick for Waimate picking up 5-26 and Cameron Lundie chipped in with 4-25.
Waimate remain winless.
Meanwhile in the Twenty20 competition Celtic proved too strong for Waimate. They made 128-4 batting first and restricted Waimate to 114-8.
Star lost comprehensively to Temuka. Batting first Star struggled to 112 all out and Temuka finished 113-5 off 18.2 overs winning by five wickets.
Timaru rolled Pleasant Point for 57 and chased it down without losing a wicket in just 6.1 overs. Smallridge was unbeaten on 27 and Sam Porter 15.
