Shaky start leaves local boys behind

A NERVOUS start with the bat cost the South Canterbury years five and six primary boys’ cricket team a loss on day one of their South Island tournament in Rangiora yesterday.

The team were up against Christchurch Metro and were all out for 76. Caleb Grace top-scored with 19 runs. In reply, Christchurch were all out for 107, eight wickets down when they passed South Canterbury’s total.

The standout bowlers were Conor Bradley, who took three wickets for 16 runs in seven overs, and George Youngman, who took three wickets for 17 runs in five overs.

Coach-manager Ants de Joux said the nervous start with the bat meant the team simply did not get enough runs.

However, he said the team bowled very well and the fielding was excellent with six out of six catches and two outstanding runouts.

Today the team play Canterbury Country South.
