South Canterbury secure first win of rep cricket season

Prabodha Arthavidu

Prabodha Arthavidu batting No 3 took South Canterbury to victory with an unbeaten 72 against North Otago

An unbeaten 72 from Prabodha Arthavidu following 57 off 32 balls by Captain James Laming led South Canterbury to their first win of the season over North Otago.

In South Canterbury’s final hit out before the Hawke Cup campaign begins, most things went their way after winning the toss and asking North Otago to bat first. They were able to field in what little sun was available and then watch from the somewhat sheltered sidelines as the batsmen took on the North Otago in miserable conditions as the predicted southerly settled in at Aorangi Oval.

North Otago began well before losing their first wicket with the score at 40 in the 8th over. The second wicket to fall was the other opener with the score at 74 when he retired hurt with a swollen elbow and then when Grant Watt removed the often dangerous Ben Cant without scoring, North Otago were effectively three down.

Watt bowled a tight spell only conceding 13 runs off his 9 overs, while at the other end Kevin Teahen bowled with his usual consistent line and length troubling all the batsmen as he finished the best of the South Canterbury bowlers with 4-37 off a long spell of 13 overs.

At 144-8 with only six overs left, South Canterbury took a bit of stick as North Otago added a further 36 runs to finish their 50 overs on 180 and leave South Canterbury a tougher chase that they would have hoped.

The South Canterbury innings started in T20 style as James Laming played some devastating shots to seemingly good deliveries scoring 48 of his 57 runs in boundaries before he was the second wicket to fall with the score on 80 in just the twelfth over.

The loss of Laming put the pressure back on Prabodha ‘Artha’ Arthavidu who was battling to find his usual touch, but in a good show of determination he battled on.

He lost three partners to the left-arm spin of Jordan Horrell and had a life himself as the score crawled to 103-5 before getting some support from Zane Sanders.

Just as the pair had started picking up the scoring rate Sanders ran himself out in a terrible mix-up and North Otago were suddenly in the stronger position as South Canterbury slumped to 126-6 and then 129-7 with the target still fifty runs away.

Ben Watson joined Arthavidu and contributed equally to the next partnership before being dismissed for 18 but importantly had helped get his team to 163 and within 18 runs of victory.

Kevin Teahen came and went and Arthavidu then took even more control making sure he kept strike with South Canterbury nine down, receiving 17 of the final 19 balls delivered.

The equation became 9 runs off three overs when Arthavidu had hearts racing as he drove in the air to mid-off, but for the second time the Sri Lankan Gods were watching as a simple catch was put down. He stayed where he was on strike and made no more mistakes hitting two boundaries to tie the scores before grabbing a quick single to win the match for his adopted province and have his team mates smiling happily despite the cold day.

The pre-season matches are over and the next game is the first round of the Hawke Cup against Mid Canterbury in Ashburton in two weeks time, and the selectors will have a couple of decisions to make before they decide on the final playing 12.

Porter dominates match in Waimate win

Sam Porter

Sam Porter starred with 4 wickets (including a hatrick) and 77 runs with the bat in Waimate’s win.

77 runs with the bat and four wickets with the ball including a hat-trick for Sam Porter dominated senior cricket in Waimate’s win against Roncalli/Celtic.

In other senior cricket matches a century to Dan Laming dispelled Star’s hopes after they had Celtic in a bit of trouble at 86-5 and Temuka couldn’t buy a trick after dismissing Timaru for just 115, they succumbed for a mere 52.

Waimate, trying out the duel captain theory with Connor Farrell and Matt Sew Hoy at the helm, won the toss and asked Celtic/Roncalli to bat first.

Mike and Ben de Joux added 42 for the first wicket and then Liam Beck kept the momentum going on his way to the team top score of 39 before losing his wicket with the total at 87, but after these three had batted only extras could make double figures.

The inspirational introduction of third change bowler Porter paid dividends as he scuttled the Roncalli/Celtic middle order removing batsmen No 4, 5, 6 and 7 including the hat-trick on his way to an impressive 4-17 bowling analysis.

Roncalli/Celtic never recovered after being 102-7 eventually all out for 116 in the 33rd over.

Waimate immediately put themselves on the back foot losing opener George Morgan run out by Grant Watt first ball of the innings.

However, after that it became the Porter show as poor catching by Roncalli/Celtic) kept Waimate in the game, and pushed themselves out of the game. Porter completely dominated proceedings and eventually found some support in Steve Oehley with 17 not out as he took Waimate to within a run of victory before losing his own wicket for 77, but had done all that was needed to see Waimate home as they completed their first win of the one day season in the 26th over.

Star began the day as underdogs against Celtic, but after blowing their opportunity of an upset in T20 the weekend before was looking to show it wasn’t an anomaly after Celtic won the toss and batted.

Alex McDuff showed his 6 wicket bag in the first round against Celtic wasn’t a fluke too as he was again the main destroyer taking four of the first six wickets to fall as the Celtic batsmen could only just manage double figures and at 86-5 looked under a bit of pressure.

“Mr Cricket” Dan Laming had other ideas and after finding a good ally in Tom Pavletich set about the repair job. The pair added 100 runs before Pavletich was out for 31, and the score over 200 when Laming was out for 104, but the control of the match was firmly back in Celtic hands, and the tail took the score through to 255-8 by the end of their 50 overs, with Brad Gilbert chiming in with 33.

Star’s run chase started steadily despite the early loss of Phil McGregor with Jacques Marais again top-scoring with 38, but at 94-4 when Marais departed the long Star tail was displayed and eventually they were all out for 136.

Bowling for Celtic James Laming showed his all round qualities making up for a shorter than planned stay at the crease when batting to take four top order wickets on his way to 4-20, and Sam Carlaw and Pavletich took two apiece at very economical rates.

The Temuka home game against Timaru had to be played at Ashbury Park while they await the finish of renovations at Temuka Oval, but unfortunately Timaru didn’t allow them any “home team advantage” winning the toss and batting first.

Wickets fell regularly and runs were hard to come by with Vaughan Tarrant (3-24) Kevin Teahen (2-13) and Kevin Kerse (2-27) all returning economical figures. Zane Sanders top scored for Timaru with 22, but a total of 115 looked like being a battle to defend.

Despite the difficult run scoring conditions Temuka’s batting was at best ‘poor’, exemplified by the fact extras was top score and only Johnny Geddis could make double figures.

The consolation for Temuka is that they still remain in 2nd place with four rounds left, while Timaru edge closer moving into 3rd on their own.

Old heads shine in senior T20 cricket matches

Liam Beck bowls to Sam Porter

Umpire Duncan Blockstock watches intently as Liam Beck bowls to Sam Porter during cricket at Ashbury Park between Roncalli-Celtic and Waimate.

The veterans starred in the latest double-header round of T20 matches played over the weekend.

In the first games Hayden Leonard, with 60 runs off 48 balls, led Timaru to victory over Temuka, Mike de Joux got Roncalli/Celtic off to a fast start with 37 to set up their win over Waimate, and Dan Laming, with 2 wickets for just four runs, helped Celtic avoid an upset against Star.

For the losing sides other old hands Nathan Sew Hoy, with 44, led Waimate’s unsuccessful reply, as did Robbie Barry with an unbeaten 55 for Temuka.

Star could have had two wins from two matches, but managed to find a way to lose after restricting Celtic to just 119-9 from their 20 overs. Craig Hinton was the main destroyer, taking 3-11 with support from John Beeby with 3-26, but after being handily placed at 80-2, could only score 102-7 from their 20 overs and will be still wondering how they didn’t cause an upset.

Jacques Marais (44) was again Star’s leading batsman but only Danny Campbell with 20 could also make double figures, as Glenn Matthews with 2-3, and James Laming 2-9, ripped through the rest of the batsmen.

Roncalli/Celtic – on the back of de Joux’s start which had them well placed with 51 runs on the board after only four overs – eventually posted 156-4, with Tristram Cooper top-scoring with 44 not out.

Despite Sew Hoy’s effort Waimate finished almost 50 runs short, dismissed for 108.

Temuka posted 124-3 on the back of Barry’s innings, but after their fast start were well pulled back by Timaru, especially by Tim Butler with 2-17 and Dwayne Richardson 1-12 off their four-over spells.

Timaru had little trouble chasing the score down on the back of Leonard’s knock, and would continue in the same vein in their second match, posting 145-4 against Waimate.

This time it was Sri Lankan import Prabodha Arthavidu with an unbeaten 62 who led the way and Waimate had no answers as they only made 76 in reply, a score that was helped to a semblance of respectability by number 9 Connor Farrell with an unbeaten 22.

At CSG the fight seemed to have gone out of the Magpies in their second match as Temuka found ways to get dismissed on their way to just 100 against Celtic.

The score could have been a lot lower if Celtic had held some of the chances that were spilled throughout the day, as Sam Carlaw, with 3-16, and Dan Laming again to the fore with 2-14, led the bowling attack.

Celtic’s Jacob Naylor (55*) and Captain James Laming (46*) made no contest of the chase with a century opening stand taking their side to their second victory of the day in just 12.2 overs.

The last match to finish for the day also became the tightest as Star made up for their ‘choke’ against Celtic by defending a good score of 155-2 against Roncalli/Celtic, who needed 19 runs off the final Craig Hinton over for victory but finished up 10 runs short.

Star’s innings was again built on the back of a Jacques Marais innings as he scored 53 not out, but this time had support from Danny Campbell with an unbeaten 47 and Phil McGregor who laid the platform with 32.

Ben Simpson was the pick of the Roncalli/Celtic bowlers, only conceding 14 runs from his three-over spell, a feat that gave him the opportunity to open the batting in the chase where he helped his team with 17 runs.

But despite 30s from Mike de Joux and Jarrod Woofinden and 21 from Adam Beck in his final outing before surgery, the Roncalli/Celtic chase was always just behind the 8-ball.

Tight bowling from Hinton (2-18) and Alex McDuff (1-16) along with a 3-wicket bag to John Beeby meant Star finally posted their first T20 win of the season.

Timaru’s two wins has leapt them ahead of the other chasing clubs into second spot on the table, while Celtic confirmed its number one ranking as their unbeaten season continues.

Rain only winner in Senior T20 cricket matches

Robbie Barry on his way to a score of 19 for Temuka against Waimate at Aorangi Oval.

Robbie Barry on his way to a score of 19 for Temuka against Waimate at Aorangi Oval.

On a day full of stop/starts the weather had the most to say as teams batting second won easily with smaller run chases in South Canterbury senior cricket on Saturday.

One must remember that the Duckworth/Lewis calculation system does not apply in club cricket in South Canterbury, but that the simple average method is used i.e. total runs divided by 20. This gives a figure that is then multiplied by the number of overs available to the team batting second to find the new target total.

Star was put in to bat first at home against Timaru, a decision made because of the forecast showers and not because Timaru prefer to chase, or wanted to see what the pitch was doing, but because in Twenty20 cricket the team batting second in rain-affected matches thus inherits a huge advantage.

Star got through to 14 before the wheels fell off and in no time at all they were 16-5 as uncle and nephew (Hayden and Brad Leonard) knocked the top order over.

Only Jacques Marais in his second outing for Star showed any resilience as he found a partner in Sam Richardson to take the score through to 63. When the 20 overs were up Marais had finished 54 not out and had helped Star to a more competitive 92-7.

For Timaru both Leonards took 2-8 while Tim Butler also grabbed two wickets.

The break came at the same time as more rain and the over reductions started eventually leaving Timaru requiring 75 runs off 14 overs, a target they reached off just nine overs with Michael Hogan (22) and Prabodha Arthavidu (23*) the top scorers and Jeremy Lane picking up both wickets to fall.

At Aorangi Oval the two country teams met first up with Waimate batting against Temuka.

Waimate started well scoring 69 before losing George Morgan for 25 and then Waimate Captain Sam Porter for 36 on the same total.

Waimate also had their usual running between the wickets problem losing two more batsmen in that manner, but T20 specialist Nathan Sew Hoy again stood up, scoring 48 not out as Waimate put up a good total of 142-5 before rain stopped play in their 20th over.

The long break counted in Temuka’s favour as their target was reduced to just 50 off 7 overs, which while they still had to get them, was probably a lot easier than maintaining that scoring rate for 20 overs.

Willie Stone with 17 not out and Robbie Barry 19 made the job look easy as they won after 5 overs.

In the “Catholic Derby” at Ashbury Park, Roncalli/Celtic batted first against Celtic but only Tristram Cooper with 22 showed much fight as the rest of the batsmen made steady progress to and from the pavilion as Roncalli/Celtic were dismissed in the final over for 82.

James Blackstock (3-17) picked up the first 3 wickets to fall and Tom Pavletich with 3 -10 also enjoyed his time at the bowling crease.

Celtic’s run chase was interrupted by rain but eventually Captain James Laming (30 not out) and Sam Carlaw reached the target of 62 for the loss of just the one wicket.

For Roncalli/Celtic the tactic seemed to be to give everyone a bowl (except the captain) and although 10 bowlers were used only Liam Cosgrove with 1-6 had any luck.

As the second matches all ended up being abandoned due to the inclement weather, the leaderboard will have to wait until next weekend’s double-header to gain some shape or see who will get the jump on other teams. Currently Celtic has two wins and the next four teams have one win.

Ron Biggar Memorial remains in Ashburton

South Canterbury’s very promising start finished 30 – 40 runs short of a winning total in the Ron Biggar Memorial match against Mid Canterbury at the Ashburton Domain.

Batting first South Canterbury made steady progress before losingSam Porter for their first wicket with the score on 43. As often happens in cricket the established partner also followed soon after with Captain James Laming out to a top catch for 20 and it was up to newcomers Prabodha Arthavidu and Josh Dick to build a new partnership.

While Arthavidu took a while to find his rhythm Josh Dick quickly overcame any nerves and got into his work.

The pair added 70 runs before Dick chopped one back onto his stumps after scoring 29 in a very promising debut.

Arthavidu was joined by Zane Sanders who alternated the strike at every opportunity scoring at a run a ball on his way to 35 but importantly feeding his partner the strike who was now showing his skill bringing up his fifty off 70 balls.

South Canterbury looked like putting an imposing total on the board when handily placed at 194-3 after 39 overs, but then the Mid Canterbury attack took back control as five wickets fell for the addition of only 14 runs.

At 207-8 the team had underachieved but a handy knock of 15 not out from Danny Campbell, and a few swings that connected from James Blackstock saw South Canterbury through to 231-9 at the end of their 50 overs.

While Mid Canterbury patted Harry Jones and Ben Ravenscroft on their backs after each picking up four wickets, the South Canterbury side knew what they were defending and took to the field with positive intent.

However, an early onslaught from Mid Canterbury opener James Southby soon turned things in Mid Canterbury’s favour as he scored 43 off just 24 balls before Blackstock rewarded his captain’s faith, after going for 21 runs off his opening over picking up this prized scalp and the No 3 in his third over to have Mid Canterbury 48 -2.

The introduction of off-spin from Arthavidu eventually put some breaks on the scoring, but it was the veterans Grant Watt and Kevin Teahen who really helped pull South Canterbury back into the match.

Teahen troubled all the batsman with his consistency finishing with 2-30 from his spell, and Liam Beck also got through five overs for just 14 runs before being on the end of the long handle in his sixth over as the top-scoring Mid Canterbury batsman Tait hit three sixes on his way to 63.

Mid Canterbury’s other opener Nick Gilbert also made the most of a couple of missed catches adding 61, but in the end Mid Canterbury didn’t have and scoreboard pressure on their chase as they reached the target in the 45th over for the loss of 7 wickets.

While the South Canterbury side didn’t regain the Ron Biggar Memorial, it was a good opening outing for the season with plenty of positives for the team to work on. Batsmen need to go on once established, and continue to build partnerships, because if this pitch is an indication of what is ahead with the Hawke Cup and T20 tournament also being played here, it showed it takes a while to get in, the pitch is somewhat two-paced, and it is always easier for the player that has been in for a while to continue while the new batsman becomes established.

Tarrant hat-trick sets up Temuka win

Vaughan Tarant Hat-trick

Vaughan Tarant Hat-trick

Vaughan Tarrant’s first-ever hat-trick knocked the Roncalli/Celtic middle order over and helped his Temuka side get back into winning mode.

Roncalli/Celtic won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first at home on Ashbury Park on Saturday.

Hayden Broker relished his new role as the spearhead of the Temuka bowling attack, taking the first two wickets to fall, but opener Tom Pavletich slowly got into his work for Roncalli/Celtic on his way to his side’s top score of 34.

The blustery conditions made it hard work for players on both sides but no-one could support Pavletich and build a partnership.

With the score at 60-4, Tarrant struck and suddenly it looked like an early finish as Roncalli/Celtic slumped to 64-7 but veteran Grant Watt halted any early celebrations as he scored 29 but, even more importantly, helped his team through to a more competitive 129 before they were all out.

All six Temuka bowlers had success, with Tarrant’s three wickets leading the way, while Broker, Kevin Kerse and Nick Maguire each grabbed two.

The Temuka reply was steady until they lost their first wicket on 32 but this seemed to ignite the bowling attack as Grant Watt grabbed two more in quick succession and suddenly Temuka were in a bit of trouble at 36-3.

It is moments like these when you have to take every opportunity and turn the momentum your way, and with Watt’s prodigious swing troubling all the batsmen, Roncalli/Celtic will probably reflect on the dropped chances that came their way when they were right back in the game.

Broker, whose opening scoring shot was a catch dropped by the keeper, proved the old adage that “catches win matches”.

Together with Rory Lorimer, who scored 37 in one of his final outings for Temuka, he added 47 runs and Broker made the most of his “life” as he batted his team to victory, finishing not out on 38.

Grant Watt was the best of the Roncalli/Celtic bowlers and deserved better figures than his 2-30, while Sean McLeary continued to show his “golden arm” qualities, making a breakthrough soon after being thrown the ball.

Celtic had no problems at Rockdale Rd repelling the Timaru side, who did not turn up on the day. A series of poor shot selections and basic technical errors, after winning the toss, had them all back in the shed for 68 runs with only Zane Sanders (23), Ben Fraser (12) and extras (12) making double figures.

All the Celtic bowlers got in on the act, with captain James Laming returning the best figures of 3-14 while Dan Laming, James Blackstock and Ben Watson each picked up a pair.

The reply was short-lived as Jacob Naylor played a great cameo before being out for 22 with the score at 25, and then James Laming (29 no) and Sam Carlaw (13 no) saw Celtic to victory in the 12th over.

It was club day at Star and they welcomed Waimate to Mountainview by asking them to bat first. Waimate began strongly with an opening stand of 84 as Sam Porter showed disdain to all the bowlers while George Morgan happily kept his wicket at the other end while feeding Porter the strike.

It was not until fifth bowler Dale Warwood was introduced that there was a breakthrough, removing Morgan for 15.

Waimate’s second wicket fell soon after, before Lachie Robertson with 40 helped Porter who eventually made 81 to put up a good score for Waimate of 164.

The spinners again had the most success, with Warwood’s 2-19 off nine overs a very economical return and Henry Race took 3-25.

Star started well in their chase, adding 78 runs between Phil McGregor and Adam Fahey for the opening partnership. Then 43 more runs were added for the second wicket before Robertson had a double breakthrough on his way to 3-31 in a good all-round return to cricket.

But it was to no avail as McGregor, who relished the balls he was able to cut or work onside on his way to 72 not out, made sure his team got home without panic.

He had good support from Race, with 31 not out, as Star won in the 42nd over.

Next weekend is a double-header in the Twenty20 competition.

Dan Laming.

Dan Laming 96

Celtic’s James and Dan Laming’s individual performances erased any hope of victory for Temuka while other matches also resulted in one-sided wins to Timaru and Star.

Celtic won the toss and decided to bat first at home and scoring an imposing 320-5 from their 45 over stint at the batting crease; a tally built around the 156-run partnership between brothers James and Dan Laming for the third wicket after Dan batting at No 4 joined opening batsman and captain James with the score 66-2.

They built their foundation steadily, going to drinks after 25 overs with the score on 107, but after drinks and for the final 20 overs they exploded as Celtic scored at more than 10 runs an over through until the finish.

None of the bowlers were spared as the brothers gave a master class in batsmanship, inter-mingling well-run singles, twos and threes with numerous boundaries.

From the sidelines the only question seemed to be whether Dan would catch James and score his century first. It was a disappointment, and even more so for James himself when he was out for 96 attempting to pull a short delivery from Joe Wagner that he top-edged and Hayden Broker managed to hold onto.

Then just a few overs later Dan was caught on the wide long-on boundary hitting into the wind also for 96, so there was nothing to separate them, despite both players deserving centuries.

The partnership was a catalyst for the remaining Celtic batsmen to attack everything as cameos from Jake Naylor 26, Andrew Buckingham 29 not out and Sam Carlaw with a 7 ball unbeaten 25 took the score quickly over 300.

There was no respite for any of the Temuka bowlers although Kevin Kerse conceded only 37 runs from his 9 overs.

In reply, Temuka began steadily with opener Willie Stone again top-scoring for his side with 32 and an opening partnership of 40 runs but this time James Blackstock made the breakthrough sending the first three batsman back to the pavilion on his way to his best figures this season with 3-22.

Broker went on attack quickly making his way to 27 before he walked over the top of a delivery from Sam Carlaw to be bowled, and Dan Laming then showed his all round qualities as he took 4-28 off his 8 overs to cap off a good day at the office and clean up the middle order.

In the end Temuka had no real answer to the Lamings and were all out for 139 in the over.

Across town at Ashbury Park Roncalli/Celtic hosted Star in what many believed would be a tight match, but Star quickly dispelled those thoughts.

Roncalli/Celtic won the toss and batted first but their batsmen were soon making a beaten path back to the pavilion as Craig Hinton with 3-7 off his 9 overs and Jeremy Lane with 2-12 destroyed the top-order who were teetering at 16-5 and on target for a very embarrassing scoreline.

It was left to stalwart Ants de Joux to arrest the slide, but he found the going hard too, taking 11 overs to get off the mark and batting 20 all told for the team’s top score of 13!

He had some support from Jarrod Woofinden and Grant Watt, but eventually the Star spin attack of Dale Warwood (3-12) and Jacques Marais (2-17) cleaned up the tail dismissing Roncalli/Celtic for 64.

It took Star 21 overs to achieve victory, but they did it in style losing only one wicket as Danny Campbell (23) and Phil McGregor (16) both finished unbeaten at the end of the game.

Timaru dominated proceedings at Waimate after being asked to bat first and scoring 212-5. Their innings included fifties to both South Canterbury Senior representatives Prabodha Artavidu and Zane Sanders and double-figure contributions from everyone else.

For Waimate bowling honours were shared amongst four, with the best return to Connor Farrell with 1-30.

In reply Waimate could find no answers as they stumbled along to 48-8 before being dismissed for 56 with only Sam Porter (17) and extras reaching double figures.

Friday Night Junior Bash Under Way

The South Canterbury Cricket “Junior Bash” got under way on Friday night with 4 teams of boys and girls getting their first taste of formal cricket with teams from Barton Rural, Sacred Heart, Temuka and Pleasant Point all taking part.

They play with an “incrediball” which is softer and means they only need bats and stumps and it was great to see them all having a go.

A special thanks to parents and teachers for helping the kids play and for all the supporters who braved the typically chilly easterly breeze that blows across Ashbuy Park on an otherwise nice night, and hope that the kids can continue to enjoy themselves over the next few nights in this grade.

A couple of photos below show the players in action and the supporters in attendance.

Mark Parker Memorial Match Postponed

sccricket-logo-grnUnfortunately due to a clash of timetables, the Otago Metropolitan A side is now unable to play in the annual Mark Parker Memorial match against South Canterbury scheduled for this Sunday November 9th.

As the game holds a lot of importance in both our calendars, Otago Cricket felt that by being unable to send a fully competitive team due to a clash with the opening round of their Senior Knockout competition and also their U19 Men having a representative match, they would prefer to postpone the match until a suitable date for both Districts.

It is expected that the match will most likely now take place in the New Year, but due to the World Cup and already tightened schedules as well as a paucity of available dates, the date and location of this postponed match is yet to be determined.

While South Canterbury Cricket is disappointed at this turn of events, we also wish to do the occasion justice and are working hard with Otago Cricket to find an agreeable solution.
